CAN WE IMAGINE/CREATE SYMPTOMS?

Hi everyone! In this video I talk about whether I believe we can imagine, create our manifest symptoms especially after reading them or hearing of someone who has X disease. I hope this video brings you some comfort to know that you are never alone. Please note, I'm not a doctor or a medical professional. Please never take my own experiences over the advice over your doctors.

For me, the telltale sign that I'm "creating" a symptom is how much it connects to shame and self-loathing. For me, I'm not so much afraid of being sick or dying--I'm afraid of the shame that I messed up my health somehow, or I've ignored some symptom and caused my own demise, which is a reflection of my character.

It is so crazy! I have somatic symptom disorder as well as illness anxiety disorder and it suuuuucks!! It’s so crazy how much your mind can play tricks on you to the point to where you don’t know what’s real or not. My mind has manifested symptoms like crazy and because I still struggle with this concept I truly believe I have that illness attached to the symptoms and it’s a vicious cycle. My own GP even told me that if you focus on one main symptom or body part that your mind will amplify it to the max and it will continue until you address the mental part of it. Even with things like chronic pain, your stress and anxiety level and your mind can cause chronic pain that is completely idiopathic and it isn’t until the mind is addressed that pain finally is managed or healed. Absolutely fascinating.

Thank you for your videos, they are so helpful, especially when I start going down the googling symptoms route I always find myself getting the symptoms that I read. I first started worrying about lymphoma about 6 months ago after feeling a small lump in my groin area, after googling my symptoms the night after I started to get night sweats and I started to feel itchy all the time, I was convinced I had lymphoma. I went to the doctors and she said the lymph node wasn’t swollen, another doctor told me the exact same thing and the symptoms slowly seemed to go away. Same thing happened with bone cancer, I thought my joint was swollen and saw the words bone cancer and I immediately felt the worry come over me, the next morning I wake up feeling weak and aching all over, feeling like I had to limp with the effected leg. I was so terrified of it being cancerous that I forgot to stop and think that weakness and aching are completely normal symptoms of anxiety that I get whenever it’s at it’s worst. The doctor couldn’t feel any lumps or swelling and said my leg was completely normal, then the aching that I was getting went away.

Wow thats crazy. Your story is almost exactly the same as mine. Went for a check up, had an irregularity on an ECG, then was sent that afternoon for 2 sets of blood tests to measure my Triponin levels (heart stress hormone) which had trended up between each test, but came down later that night after i was sent to emergency. And then it was 4 months of trying to get appointments for stress tests and monitors etc, just to find out there was nothing wrong. But by that stage my health anxiety was already in high gear from the worry. But like you i had alot of chest related symptoms, and raised heart rate and palpitations etc. Once i got the all clear, 99% of that stuff went away. Im now having bowel and digestion issues and im back in the same place of not knowing what the hell is going on lol and finding it really hard to get appointments for tests, without having to wait months at a time. It's madness.

Did the doctor take you seriously, did he look good enough, wasn't the tumor just hidden etc. It is absolutely insane but I just feel like I am dying. I read all the symptoms of a brain tumor like confusion etc. Now I just can't remember a thing and just keep checking myself if I still understand whats happening and throw questions at myself like: what did you do yesterday, and when I can't remember, a thousand alarm bells go off in my head. It just feels like severe brain fog.

I get this every time I read the side effects of any medication. Or when I read reviews about a medication. Or when I read a case study. I read it and bang I’m experiencing it. Usually not the mild symptoms, usually the most severe and often rare symptoms. I have it now. Severe neurological symptoms because the one symptom that terrified me was nerve damage from this specific antibiotic. The symptoms are real so just as you say how do you know when real and when they are essentially generated by a very triggered anxious mind? The nocebo effect is huge with me. It’s awful because I will never take this antibiotic again yet it may be totally harmless to me. And meanwhile my feet and hands are tingling, I’ve got burning skin sensations that move about, intense itching that moves about. It’s terrifying. I’m so grateful for this channel and wish everyone dealing with this strength and healing

I’m exactly like this. My health anxiety started with twitching last year (still twitch now but only really when I’m anxious or thinking about it) now it’s heart problems, my partner is a covid ‘expert’ I.e he sends me every single link relating to covid and in particular I picked up on effects on the heart following covid. I had it in October, and a few weeks later I start getting or noticing palpitations, go to the dr, they do an in house ecg but manage to lose the results before I come back for them so now in a couple of days time I’m going for a 24 he monitor, this week I have developed actual chest pain. I’m thinking is it real Or is it made up in my own head. I don’t know, because like most people in here, I can’t trust my own mind! Or so it feels. I also have in the past had exactly the same with a uti too. And I too took myself off to the on call dr at the local hospital, he did a simple dip test and sent urine for microbiology (which both came back clear) but as soon as the hospital dip test came up negative and he explained to me why he thought I probably wouldn’t have a kidney infection, my symptoms disappeared within seconds literally they went.

Before the twitching I had seen that foot drop was an initial symptom of ALS, perceived weakness left around Jan 20th but as of Jan 17th I got a tremendous amount of fasciculations in my legs/feet. This has now spread to my face and I feel it's difficult to swallow or awkward to chew. I am now super anxious about ALS but again going insane. I have objectively tested my jaw/muscle/vocal cord strength and no clinical signs. Hopefully my neuro can set me at ease in 10 days. 😭🤢

My legs were literally jumping visibly in her office one day and she said ask them now what they want you to know. I did and the answer was immediate. We can’t carry all of this pain anymore. YES, I absolutely agree! I think I manifested my tinnitus because I read about it online and heard my family talking about it, and low and behold, sometime later I started hearing ringing in my ears. Suddenly my whole leg felt numb, I had pain in my calf and leg, it felt exactly like the vein was hurting it was like a burning sensation and then my calf felt like it was swollen. What I found interesting was that I went to ER had X-ray done and ultrasound for clots and they found nothing. They told me to put ice on them. It went away for about 5 months now came back 😢I think it’s anxiety related because when I’m distracted or have other serious issues going on I don’t feel it much. This is exactly what I think most of us needed confirming. I've been told many times by GPS, consultants etc how the mind really can manifest, real, pain, symptoms etc. I've had 3 months of being convinced I have throat 'C' (hate that word).. I've had many, many tests, reassurance from my GP, specialist's, it's just taking a while for my mind/brain to truly absorb what they tell me as every single day I focus on my throat, so, pain remains. It is amazing how when you 'manage' your thoughts more in a positive way, those pains/symptoms go almost overnight, I know as I've suffered Health Anxieties on and off for around 10 years now..

I'd thought I could have a pituitary tumor just because a patch of dark hair grew under my chin (I'm a female, well... I also suspected ovarian cancer, it was ridiculous) and I have a bad eyesight, so yeah, my mind convinced me that a pituitary tumor could be pressing on my optic nerve. I didn't have headaches, at least not intense, to even suspect a brain tumor. And suddenly I got this intense headache I'd never had in my life. It didn't last long, but it was pretty terrifying. And I began smelling smoke until I convinced myself I couldn't really have that tumor and also got my eyes checked. My eyesight isn't deteriorating as quickly as before (I needed to get my eyesight checked anyway, but I shouldn't have suspected a pituitary tumor), which also surprised me because if there was a tumor it wouldn't make any sense. I've had bad eyesight for a long time, my chin hairs popped up pretty recently. Also, my hormone levels turned out to be normal, so that should be a consolation, right? I also felt slight pain/pressure just where my ovaries are, mainly my left one, which didn't go away until I got them checked and made sure there wasn't any tumor growing there. Oh, and my nausea was pretty stubborn until I got an abdominal ultrasound done.

I Have a awful health anxiety and OCD (male 28) and I'm im the bulbar Als rabbit hole .. I read about it and after a week I have started to slurre many words, No one have heard it when they speak to me, but! I have it recorded when I do slurre, so I really are slurring my words. I also started stuttering. After the first slurre I got so hyperaware of my speech. I have never had any problems with my speech, my speech is my biggest gift in my life so when something is off with it, I know for sure something is really wrong. During this time, I also remember my tongue feeling fatigue. I do not slurre all the time it's coming and going. I’ve also developed in the last 2-3 days a scalloped tounge and burning sensation on my tounge (never had this before), fasiculations all over my body, mostly on my left buttcheek, it also feels like I have lost the coordination of my tounge and my tounge is always touching my teeth while I’m speaking, I never had braces and I have straight teeth. And today I have bit my tounge like 15 times meanwhile I'm speaking .. So to my question, is this the bulbar onset of ALS? Because how can it be possible for me to slurre my words for 17 days with just hyperawareness and health anxiety, it should not be possible right?

Having said that, it might be something else. Get it checked by a doctor. Let me tell you my story. Couple of weeks ago, I had this pain at the back of my legs. I thought it was nothing and I was just sitting wrong while playing video games and then I had the most stupid idea of all and googled it. Went to an orthopaedist who referred me to a neurologist who happens to be my father’s closest friend so I had the chance to call her and ask about it. She told me it is probably nothing but just in case she needs to see my emg. Of course, I had another stupid idea and googled “why do doctors want an emg test?” Aaaaand boom, there was it. Next day, I went to see her and specifically asked about it and she told me to get it out of my mind because everything is normal. And the next day I started twitching because I kept reading the symptoms and voila… you’re not alone.

One more thing if you have all above symptoms like mine , so can plain mri of 1.5 tesla without contrast can be enough or needed contrast, bcoz I heard if anything abnormal even without contrast mri can show a slight as you know contrast can be harmful too

Yes, that is possible. It's probably due to anxiety, but it's best for you to go check that out with your doctor. You'll be fine.

@@raqueldelclos I can relate your story because I had the same symptoms (my left foot would tremble all the time and my hands were always shaking, I had blurry vision in one eye, headaches and other stuff I can't remember) Of course, I was imaging the worse (that I have some autoimmune disease) so I went to the hospital and did loads of tests and waited a while month for the results. All that time I was experiencing the symptoms and I convinced myself I definitely have MS. After my results came back clear, I COMPLETELY stopped having those symptoms. Well, my leg still trembles sometimes and my hands get shaky from time to time but I have have to remind myself that it's anxiety, nothing else. I found out I sometimes process my anxiety without even knowing I'm anxious (subconsciously) so it's really likely that it's the same case for you. Don't always belive your feelings.

@@franccci I got an MRI AND EMG and they both came back with normal results! I’m still twitching though and my left calf is still vibrating /trembling . 😢 it’s been 5 days since I found out the good news so I thought it’d be gone by now since I feel more calm. I was also having phantom rain drop sensation but that has been coming and going. Also slight blurry vision. How long did it take for your symptoms to go away?

@@raqueldelclos I read somewhere on a health anxiety forum that it's actually pretty normal for people with health anxiety (after they get all the tests clear) to experience similar or the exact symptoms they had before they got a result. That happens because your body goes into anxiety mode (that's when you have symptoms such as trembling, phantom pain, blurred vision, heart palpitations and all sorts of strange sensations on the body). It might take some time for your body to calm itself down. It's been more than a month since I got my MRI scans and other tests clear and I STILL experience a lot of strange sensations (such as hand trembling, headaches, pin, and needle-like sensations, and so on). Because I continued to be anxious I even got eye floaters and tinnitus. All of this is stuff is connected with anxiety and stress. Even though it took me a week or so to get used to the sounds in my ear, I'm doing fine now It's important that you lower your stress levels and start worrying less. YOU HAVE TO Start meditating and exercising. You'll see, you'll feel a lot less anxious and better in general It's important to tell yourself that all these symptoms you experience are NOT SERIOUS and that they will pass too. Basically, to answer your question, it might take some time for all that stuff to subside. (a few months, but you have to work on your anxiety managment) You will be okay :)

This is unlikely, however your body can react as if you've got the illness because you're brain is telling the nerves in that area that somethings wrong. The muscles around the nerve react, tense up and all of a sudden you're feeling so bad and convince yourself it's real. But the brain can't create disease. Control anxiety, control the symptoms. It's hard sometimes to accept that it is the anxiety doing it, but a lot of work is now going into looking at the connection between the mind and how it controls things. Pain at the end of the day is just a message relayed back to the brain, so why can't the brain get the wrong signal from time to time. It would still feel real

@@cherellethinks haha thank you for liking. I think to be able to relate to how someone feels is the best cure for health anxiety. Doctors don't help much and at the end of the day people just need an arm around them and to be understood. And that's why what you do is amazing. Yourself and Trey put things out there that people can watch and say "that's me too". It's like visual medicine. Hope you're doing OK anyway 👍

I've had health anxiety for the better part of 5 years now, it has always been centred around my heart and nothing else, cardiophobia to be exact. I had a bad experience at 19 involving my heart it's a long story but since then I've been fine, my resting heart rate is 53bpm, my blood pressure is like 119/79 when I'm not anxious, I'm very athletic I couldn't be in better health. And yes I constantly have heart related symtpoms, left arm pain, chest pain, nausea, lightheadness you name it. I have since addressed the residual stress and anxiety. But that underlining health anxiety has taken on a life of it's own. Even though I have no had a panic attack, or any real bouts of anxiety in months I still have this almost never ending dull ache right where my heart is, like I'm talking internal not on the muscle surface. It is such a strange feeling that makes me skeemishike I'm going to implode when I think too much about it, I can't really explain it. I've had to come to peace with this and just accept that even though I don't give it power now my lizard brain still perceives a threat and will continue to remind me my heart is there and make up pains even though I'm not anxious anymore, it is what it is.
