Agreed I love this game to a fault, but I’m not so much of a sycophant that I’m oblivious to the issues of this game. This video has as you stated very eloquently explained what’s going on and Konami really needs to start taking complaints/concerns into account a lot of us Yugi boomers are getting older and as life Responsibilities start to mount more you can’t count on those same people to continue to devote time or money into a product especially if it’s mid or even subpar and learn how to start targeting the next generation of players and make cards more readily accessible. You can still make money hand over fist and still give the people what they want. Konami should already know this.

My LGS recently stopped selling yugioh. Low attendance, bad ROI, pull rates, no longer justify ordering cases. This was a shop started BY yugioh players, and they are now pivoting to Lorcana, Pokémon, and MTG. The other shop in my area has yugioh products, but they are charging almost double MSRP because they know the sets with one or two chase cards don't move as much as Rarity Collection, thus pricing more people out and creating this doom loop. Products don't move, meta is expensive, prize support sucks, cost of living is on the rise, and people on both sides of the transaction are finding this hobby to be less justifiable than ever. Despite having some of the most passionate fans of all TCGs, it's not being translated into sales, and people are max coping if they think this is nothing to worry about.

"Make pack opening fun and more incenteviced", exactly this. Across the board, ideally you want for every pack to feel like a treat for any player, and of course that isn't easy to make happen, but when you actively work against that it's impossible. I appreciate these in depth videos, it's nice to see tangible suggestions and analysis that actually reaches at the core aspects that could fix yugioh on a more holistic sense.

I was an OCG player. I started playing yugioh since 2008. I moved to UK this year and now I have to play tcg. In the end, I drop the game. The box opening experience in tcg is so bad compared to in ocg. And I just cannot afford the cards here. Like sp little knight, it is at least £90 here while in ocg, the lowest rarity is just £4.(the 25th edition in ocg is £80) This is ridiculous. Funny thing is the first time I played in a local event, I was still using Japanese cards. In that time I don’t know JP cards can’t be used in tcg events and tournaments. Most player were nice to me and allowed me to use JP cards. But in the third round, my opponent just mad at me because we are both playing rescues ace, using almost the same build, but his deck prices is much higher than mine. He thinks this is unfair and drop that game. After I dig into tcg, I now understand his feeling. I really love this game but unfortunately I have to drop it.

You've basiaclly highlighted every problem I have with playing the TCG right now. I used to buy tons of product back in 2018-2020 but I haven't bought a single box or pack since. Konami are insane for thinking, in the age of the internet, that we cannot just look over at how much better they're treating their Japanese/OCG market compared to us. It feels borderline xenophobic how much we get consistently screwed over and price gouged over shiny cardboard. They deserve a godamn lawsuit with how bad short prints have gotten sometimes. Unfortunately, they have shown year after year that they do not listen to their consumers. As long as resellers are buying the product for the secret rare chase cards to sell to competetive players at exorberate prices, they're happy.

IMO this entire thing is the result of Konami of America hiring former Upper Deck Entertainment employees when UDE lost the rights to the game. Every single bad market practice the TCG suffers today directly links to the decisions made under the Upper Deck Entertainment management. And with Konami of America being manned by literally the same people as before, the practices stayed, and will very much not likely to change.

80 dollars per box is an absurd price for what you get, and as someone with low income I would personally never buy a box at that price, its just too high. and it hurts stores too, because who in their right mind is going to buy the boxes from stores at full value when they can get them at cardmarket for 2/3rds of the price even including shipping. i havent watched the deck build packs portion of the video yet, but i recently opened a valiant smashers box for 40€, so like half of the original price, and *just* about made my money back (because i got lucky and pulled 2 "good" ultras).

This matters because hundreds of local game stores are dropping this game like a rock. What purpose does celebrating a game nearly 2 years after the creator's death do other than to rub in our faces how much Konami hates the TCG playerbase? The OCG doesn’t have nearly the amount of problems our Banlist, second market value, and product distribution has like the TCG. This set makes me understand one thing: Konami does not care. They don’t care for the game's worldwide success, not care for the image and legacy of Takahashi, and especially do not care about the game's exclusivity being it's detramemt for new players. You have to drop 100 dollars in the second market to even play tier 3 or tier 4 decks. 30 dollars for the correct ratios of certain archetypes and core cards from the structure decks and 80 dollars from a booster set or box to enhance said decks. This game is my comfort hobby, but more and more I am seeing Konami's monitary incentive to destroy it. I can’t even play casually without dropping heavy cash for support. Eventhough One Piece is Expensive like yugioh people are more than happy to open Bandai boxes that give them value, good cards and ratios and zero literally ZERO filler, this can be controversial but the "bad" cards are only that just card that u can replace when new support came out and not Cards that are unplayable cuz they sole purpose is to make bulk and nothing more. The greater point about all Bandai's TCG is Set after set of new decks, they are not pushing other decks aside, they are improving decks w cards that maybe were not intended to them or making them have another breeze of air. Konami has a long way to go and people still cope that is the best TCG but the reality is that the simplicity and more fun and interactive Modern TCG's are pushing them slowly to the edge and they anti-consumer products make other tcg's more and more alluring to the casual players.

I got back into yugioh after over ten years because of master duel. It reminded me of how much I loved this game. And I started buying a few products because of the 25th anniversary and after just a year of the terrible pull rates from boxes, I am completely burnt out. I’m still going to play duel links and master duel without spending a cent on them but I can’t bring myself to buy any more TCG products until changes are made. For me to have a ton of nostalgia for this game and to be reinvigorated by the 25th anniversary and master duel and to be put off this quickly from physical product, is a giant sign of how badly the current TCG model is.

I didn't realize it at the time, but I actually subconsciously stopped buying packs of cards because of Short Prints. Konami, your strategy to get people to spend more money on boxes...made me stop spending money on your boxes. The last good pulls I had was around Christmas, when my wife got me a box that had 1 copy of S:P Little Night and a QCR Ty-Phon in it. Clearly, a box meant to be sent to a streamer and not me. However, even with how exciting those pulls were, those were the first "Wow!" pulls I've gotten in 5 years. Last "Wow" pull I had was early 2018, then after a few sets of boring openings with $0.60 cent Secret Rares while a new deck staple Ultra Rare is 10$, I just gave up on buying packs. So yeah...please stop the short printings, Konami? I cannot fathom a business strategy that revolves around; Make a desirable item, mix it with undesirable items...then watch someone pay someone else who bought your expensive to produce and ship undesirable items for the one desirable item. You'd think they'd really look and realize "Hmm...what if we...made it so that person buying the desirable items...just got a box full of desirable items...then they keep coming to us for that instead of buying one item from that other guy...huh"

Pretty good analysis...but I think at this point, its clear (at least to me) that the two main problems of YGO TCG, come from two things that truly are beyond our reach: 1) The TCG administration itself and 2) the OCG administration....I can't tell how much one affects the other, but its clear that the two are responsible for this mess, because: the first one its literally the one legally responsible for all the bad decisions of this game (with all of its consequences)...and the second one, while not legally responsible, its still to blame because either: are well aware of the decisions the TCG does, and agrees with them or don't give a shit about the west (don't know which one is the worst).....Ultimately, its up to the players and community to decide how much shit are they gonna tolerate...but as for me, I truly stopped caring about the outcome and just play MasterDuel a few minutes per day...Not because I don't like this game (I still like it despite all the crap), but because the ones pulling the strings ABSOLUTELY deserve the slap...

Instead of the TCG's 10 Ultras distributed around the featured archetypes, with the most viable one getting a larger portion of said 10 Ultras ( Vanquish Soul had SEVEN out of the TEN ultras in Wild Survivors)

Regarding the Cost of Printing the cards: The prices of Stamping Foils used for Yugioh-Cards are sometimes multiple times higher than regular Stamping foils (I have worked together with one of the Foil-Manufacturers for Yugioh). This may also apply to other printing-materials. The cost of producing the cards also depends hugely on the country they are produced in. Belgium for example, has very high taxes (depending on who you ask, they are the highest in Europe), together with relatively high wages. This explains for example, why RA01 was so much cheaper in America, than in Europe. As retailer, I came across more American RA01 than European, because depending on the quantity, it is cheaper to import it from the US. Shipping should not be that much of an issue, because they are shipped in such large quantities to various distributors, that it may add only a few Euros per Box. The example of the 70 Year old was meant to be extreme, because it is very rare for older people to be interested in Yugioh-Products. My point was, that people who are not interested in Yugioh will not suddenly become interested into it, because the prices are getting cheaper. Most 20 to 35 Year olds care very little about Yugioh as well, though they are more likely to buy it than a 70 Year old - which is why I used such an extreme example.

  • @Paul-vq6jk

    @Paul-vq6jk

    2 күн бұрын

To further explain the example: Imagine making an offer to a financially stable 30 Year old with great income, but who has no interest in Yugioh, and who never played it as a child. You may offer him a box for 60€, and he will say "No thank you, I am not interested". So then you give him a discount, and offer it for 40€. He will still deny your offer - because why would he spend 40€ on something he is not interested in? Therefore, the number of people who would buy a booster box if it is cheaper, is very limited, and I am not sure whether a rise in boxes sold with lower profits per box will increase the total profit of a Set. It may be close however.

the saddest thing, is that it's not even remotely difficult to fix yugioh. while this is definitely one of the best videos on the topic, there have been ample videos already, for years, discussion how tcg product could be improved. There is 0 reason to think konami tcg doesn't pay attention to the game as a whole, as if they didn't, they wouldn't know what cards to short, or what cards to "rarity bump". it's with that particular though in mind that leads me to believe there is only 1 way to fix yugioh proper: *Let it fall off.* period. last year, yugioh hit arguably the largest slump it has ever seen as far as how much product was actually moving off shelves, and for the first time, in a LONG time, konami actually took a step to resolve the issue of their dumpster fire sales, by almost 1-1 importing the greatest set of all time (rc1). unfortuunately, konami didn't learn the correct lesson, as we saw with rc2 that they almost immediately went and erased everything that made rc1 such a good product, by hiking the price, altering the set structure, and filling the set with far lower value than what they could have made. no matter how many intelligent solutions you, or anyone else provides, the only thing that will solve the problem, is for players to embrace _not_ buying new product, and instead understand that, same as players who do time wizard formats, it is possible to play the game with only the cards you already own. keep *_playing_* yugioh sure, but stop *_buying_* yugioh. let konami tcg eat loss after loss, until they are so desperate to reclaim their players that they never even think to pull the same tricks they currently employ so freely right now. sure, you don't get the new $500-1k staples or meta decks, but if given the choice between that, or making the game healthier for good, i would rather not (and i really haven't) put money into supporting konamis terrible practices.

It will only encourage people to buy quantities of the specific cards that they wanted from each set and avoid sealed product entirely, causing LGSs to lose even more money compared to dealing with some mediocre sets. For example, if you only wanted S:P, then why would you pay at least around $60 for a box of AGOV if you can buy at least 2 copies from an online vendor for much less? Most TCG players are only concerned with being able to play paper as quickly as possible by grabbing copies of the cheapest versions of specific cards. Only way to fix products: - they have to retain value on the long run WITHOUT that value being stapled to must play meta cards -> solution is adding high rarity chase cards (starlights are good, but also including ultimates and ghosts would be even better). I would do something like 1 ulti every 2 boxes / 2 every 3 boxes? Damn even 1 per box. 1 Starlight per case. 1 Ghost every 10 cases? (since the ghost is only 1 it should be rarer than each individual starlight). Players would pay enormous amount of money tohave the meta card at those very cool chase rarities (see for example pokemon, where each deck is 50 EUR and top tables only play with maxed out rarities which cost 10-100x original value of cards) - reduce standardisation, now after pulling the 2 secrets you can almost throw away the box. The number of secrets per box should be variable, like 2.5 on average (minimum of 2 guaranteed, possibility for going to even 3 and sometimes to 4) - introduce similarly to pokemon a "reverse system" where all the card in the set can be found as "reverse" (i was thinking of reintroducing the old mosaic foil), good for keeping super viable staple prices more controlled, possible to bling out some of lower rarity cards (or replace a super you may not like as super). Whatever you do PLEASE not as starfoils, that would suck - cut the crap. 9 cards per pack are too many when opening core sets, too many commons. Packs should go down to 7 cards, like 4 commons, 1 super or above, 1 of the reverse and one extra spot for a common which may become the ultimate/ghost/starlight - something like the list in magic for sometimes taking an old meta card reprinted for retro formats? (it may take once every 8 packs the slot of the 5th common?)

We no longer matched the OCG in rarities. The infamous DAD was an rare in the OCG, sercet rare in the TCG. Sets went from 60 to 80, 100 in the TCG with 10 new TCG exclusives every set. I think something that would help would be to do away with the deck building sets and put them into main sets as more playable. This has always been a problem going way back. This may sound off topic, but I think better card design would help, too. Everything doesn't have to be game breaking, but worth Maybe looking at.

I remember I had to stop playing TK Dino after Lythosagym was unbanned because I couldn’t afford a single copy animadorned. I had to watch as a deck I had played for my entire competitive career was finally able to compete, and then watch it get killed just in time for the reprints. Since then every deck I have wanted to build has been completely out of my price range not even including the new staples that are not worth getting. I can’t get excited for any new product because I know that every new deck is just a trap. I had really been looking forward to playing the new Yubel cards and had bought a box for the first time in years to try and get a head start on the deck for when the second wave of support came out, but I guess that was a mistake.

We genuinely need this guy as the head of Konami. It's genuinely painful watching this video knowing that no one at Konami cares about this. Lowk I'm thinking of emailing this to every Konami email I can because they NEED to see this

This is a great video and I just wanted to apologize for watching it at 1.5x speed - as this causes YT to say I watched for 20 minutes rather than the full 30 for some reason - due to only having about 20 minutes to finish it. Again, sorry and fantastic video as always!

i dont see the main problem for small vendors here, which is THAT we dont get enough of the good sets like AGOV or DABL. Always shortened orders, while other product orders get fulfilled. there was not a single vendor on earth that got shortened at a Soulburning Volcano Order lmao.

Speaking as someone coming from MTG with a healthy dose of game design - a lot of this is a design problem. MTG has won a lot from support for fan formats - pauper, commander, cube and draft were designed by players to make use of otherwise dead cards, and once people were playing them the EV of each set went up enough to make opening boxes mostly profitable. Reverse engineering from EV is kind of a mistake - the cards have value because people want to play with them, not the other way around. A lot of older sets only have a positive EV because a common became a pauper or commander staple years after standard rotated. Traders and people at the top of competitive like to focus on cash and chase rares, but that doesn't matter to people who just want to spend $5 a week to play a fun game, and those people are who you need to keep coming in the doors to stay open. Let people spend the change in their pocket and have a fun time. The problem is that because Yugioh's cards are far more strongly tied to deck archetypes, it is a lot harder for fans to create those low-rarity fan formats to fill that need. If your bad deck still needs an ultra rare to run its core engine, a format that bans ultrarares or relies on random pack openings makes it unplayable - so for those formats to work you'd need the design team to actually step in rather than letting it grow naturally. 'Downshifting rarity' has been very impactful for pauper in MTG, and an equivalent 'formal tier 2/3/4' format for Yugioh with design support would do an enormous amount to help. Let people dust off decks that have been shelved for years or were never playable, and give game stores a reason to stock boxes for casual players. It'd also let lower rarity slots in packs matter a lot more, while noone is going to care that their deck which is already low-value-per-card gets a reprint at a lower rarity (which should later raise prices as people actually get to play those cards). More than that, lower rarity 'archetype crossing roleplayer cards' that aren't good cards would do a hell of a lot to make draft a thing that works in yugioh.

It's been proven that alternate formats for YGO only work if people are willing to continuously support them. Trinity format, which was a unique format where weaker (and cheaper) decks could shine, failed horribly. Heart of the Underdog, an official alternate format, isn't widely supported mainly because of the fact that everyone within the YGO community has their own definition of "casual". For example, some people would call Swordsoul a "casual" deck solely because it hasn't been featured on any recent decklists that have won tops. Now imagine playing against that deck with, say, Dark Magicians. And then there's sealed play. We used to have sets that were designed for that format called Battle Packs, but it was largely ignored because people despised it for being different and the aforementioned sets didn't have much for value.

This is great and all but who but us is going to see this. In the end stores and players are hurting but Konami in the tcg doesn’t seem to care. Also something weird I’ve noticed is how much cheaper it is to play in ocg, does Konami think that people in the tcg region are richer because that’s not entirely true especially in South America where it is even worse than the other places. You have made great points backed up with research but in order for us to play this game well we need to boycott them which will either stop yugioh entirely or actually fix something

Knowledge is the first step, if someone didn't know already this video will show them that things can be better, than other games are doing it better and that even Yu-Gi-Oh is doing it much better in its other region. We're effectively boycotting tcg already as stores are stopping stocking because players know what a disgusting scam tcg sets are. I feel we aren't too far from discovering if tcg will get fixed or die, maybe a year or two.

This last month I've been playing Dungeon Duel Monsters, a program made for PvP campaigns where you slowly draft a competent deck to face an opponent. One of the best parts of it is basically picking packs of curated cards and building something who resembles playability at some point, while also trying to be aware of the opponent's strategy. Sadly I know that kind of experience on the TCG would be just burning money.

One thing that pissed me off is that product providers should not be allowed to sell to privates: they recive a case for 600 more or less sell it on their site/CM for 690€ and sell them at higher prices (after taxes) to local stores, making it impossible to compete at all, add the fact that as said in this video 9/10 products tends to plummet in price on release and you have a nice formula for disaster

On a separate note as someone who quit to play Vanguard: Game is better here by a mile when it comes to product. Price is lower (50-60ish a box) and buying a case gets you AT LEAST a playset of every RR and RRR card in the set, plus several luxury rares and full arts. Premium Precons for the Eternal Format are occasionally released, Precon Stride Decksets for Standard add budget out of the box playable decks for 40ish. All of Vanguard's starter decks generally come with full playsets of cards. However there are duds and bad moves. Like the fuckery with the new Start Decks and DZ Set 1. If Bushiroad wasn't allergic to reprints, it would be near perfect. Konami needs to look at Bushiroad and Pokemon and take notes on how to better make product.

I agree with sets having new archetypes that seem unplayable at release. Why do that konami? I would've said they do it better in core sets, but it doesn't seem like that's safe. Goblin bikers did not feel complete on release, and they didn't even give it a third wave of support, which is what usually happens for brand new archetypes in core sets. Hell, even snake eyes felt more complete in AGOV.

LOVE Duel Daddy! And damn, yeah... as someone who like... works at a store that sells shit, it's also just... so fucking rough to try to reasonably sell yugioh to anyone. If I wanna sell packs, I would need to like... make draft rules myself. It's so lame. If I open boxes, I'll letcha know and send my data! As someone who loves yugioh, and other franchises, that get... tragically murdered by being owned by Konami, I gotchu.

I bought two boxes of this set to get Ritual Beast cards. I pulled an assortment of 5 or 6 Ritual Beast cards out of all the packs in the box, and none of them were Spiritual Beast Tamer Lara. Everything new from this set that was Ritual Beast I had to get via trades from fellow players at my OTS, and 90% of the Ritual Beast core I had to buy online, including my playset of Lara. It's really sad that people have been allowed to get away with this since the TCG's inception, as it was like this during the Upper Deck era as well. (I don't think it was ever this bad though.) After Upper Deck lost the license to distribute YGO, many of Konami's employees here in North America were / are former Upper Deck employees.

Its really really sad Yugioh is having this problem. I always been playing Yugioh since i was kid and met my best friends through it. Komoney greed is starting to catch up with them and i been seeing it. I had to cut out Yugioh because buying products is just awful. The sets are usually very lack luster except for the tier 0 cards for competitive players. The Rarity Collection was the last box i bought and i was happy with it but i wasn't surprised when Barone got banned but disappointed. It's really awful komoney will probably just cut support for the for the tcg before they want to change their model. They need to fire everyone who is running the TCG and get new blood fix product and try and get people to play again and not lose value. This game is crashing hard and it really makes me sad.

As I've aged, I've begun to settle down on the decks I've previously collected and to be more selective on what upcoming cards I'll be skipping or buying. I've already spent enough this year. These issues aren't long-term sustainable. It's becoming worse and worse as the cracks widen and the R&D philosophy is acceleration of the game and powercountering the cards meant for interactions and to power balance. I understand they print counters for these counters, but... Even some counters are also a combo piece. 🤦
