Can We Create Social Change Without Money? | Nipun Mehta | TEDxFargo

Nipun Mehta makes a moving case for broadening the voluntary sector, and building designs that are powered by intrinsic motivations. With his fifteen years of experience in running a volunteer run movement, he speaks about cultivating different forms of wealth: "If money is our only metric, we begin to assume that everything has a price tag -- and in the process, we lose track of the priceless." You can learn more about his work at www.servicespace.org
Nipun Mehta is the founder of ServiceSpace (formerly CharityFocus), an incubator of projects that works at the intersection of volunteerism, technology and gift-economy. What started as an experiment with four friends in the Silicon Valley has now grown to a global ecosystem of over 400,000 members that has delivered millions of dollars in service for free. Nipun has received many awards, including the Jefferson Award for Public Service, the President's Volunteer Service Award and Wavy Gravy's Humanitarian award. He is routinely invited to share his message of "giftivism" to wide ranging audiences and serves on the advisory boards of the Seva Foundation, the Dalai Lama Foundation, and Greater Good Science Center.

This sincerely moved me to tears, because these words I hadn't yet uttered but always contemplated, this sentiment I had felt since before I could remember. This is exactly what our world needs, a global economy that runs solely on love, not money. As I said I continually ponder on how to make this a reality, and my mentors and I created a social nexus, just like this, that drives change and infinite love to flow. I've been moved to tears more times than I can count from getting calls and suprises from people showing me how grateful they are I'm in their life and that I showed them how to be that person for someone else, to be someone elses miracle instead of waiting for our own. This is truly how we thrive regardless of the currency we decide to mask it with. If this intrigues you in the least bit please feel free to reach out and I'd love to pass on the love to you :)

+George Killian Completely agree my friend. Our humanity has been suppressed for years. We biologically are wired to want to help each other. This nature has been suppressed. If you are interested in a system of this sort, I would recommend looking into 2 movements. #TheZeitgeistMovement and #TheVenusProject One being a social movement putting forth ideas (TZM) and the other is the design aspect and a model of what society could be with this system. All designs and aspects of The Venus Project are done by an amazing man by the name of Jacques Fresco. He is now 97 years old, and continues to do lectures, and create models of what our world could be. I would definitely recommend it, truly inspirational stuff. I am working to use my channels to gain funds to begin to implement transitional institutions to achieve this social system.

PressForEarth If we were wired to help each other then war and slavery would have never existed. The very existence of laws is a hint that we are wired to do whats best for us even at the cost of others, and thats absolutely logical since is nature. In nature, every living being tries to survive, whatever it takes. Fast forward in evolution and you get humans, who always aim to their well being. We are not ment to be kind, thats why Zeit and Venus will never happen. What we are is self aware of whats better for us, and that is, ironically, supress our needs in order to be a better society. Education is the best tool to supress our selfish needs.

Thanks so much Nipun. This was extremely breathtaking and life-changing. That social change that we wish to see - cannot be bought by physical things like money - it comes from the natural human spirit of love. :) LOVED this talk!

Congratulations, Nipun, that was really inspiring and motivating. Thank you so much. I will share this around - it will motivate others and hopefully change some attitudes. I have missed these talks as I had other commitments. Now with the 'lock-down' I will make time to get back to Service Space.

My God, that sincerely just moved me to tears. This. This is it. This is the power we hold. That was the most pure joy I've experienced in some time, just simply listening to you. I am grateful. When love and community are not just words, but feelings, true driving forces, we experience the greatest existence that we could ever have. Thank you.
