Can Two Prince Of Tone Overdrives Sound Like One King Of Tone? - That Pedal Show

Музыка

One Analogman King Of Tone, or two Prince Of Tones? Let’s find out…
Life too short for long KZread videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.
Welcome to the show! “Oh no!” we hear you cry. “Not another show on a pedal that is basically unobtainium?!” Well, kinda…
Analogman’s King Of Tone overdrive is worthy of its name. Revered by many, loved by us and with a waiting list that’s frankly bonkers, it absolutely deserves its reputation as one of the best overdrive pedals of all time. But what about the heir apparent; so say ‘half’ of a KOT and eminently more available: the Prince Of Tone?
In this video we compare two Prince Of Tones with the King Of Tone, and while we’re about it, we also compare the Standard KOT V4 with a High Gain option variant.
As you’ll see and hear, the results aren’t what expected at all!
We then ask how close two other OD pedals stacked could get to the KOT sound. Please note, this absolutely is not ‘Which pedals sound most like the KOT?', it’s what would we choose given two minutes’ notice. Ha!
Enjoy the show!

To anyone with an adventurous side you can build your own King of Tone Clone. Rullywow has the queen of bone. Is it just as good? No idea. It never leaves my board though and I use it all the time. It’s one of the greats. Just takes some soldering, ordering parts and not buggering it up. I went on to make a Jan Ray (Timmy with a mod) and a couple of others. Fun hobby if you like that sort of thing.

A couple things: I read that Mike’s wife passed away in 2019. I imagine a loss as immense as this would contribute to the delays. If I lost my wife, I’d be lost. I can’t imagine finding the path forward, and he has so bravo. I have two KOTs (one green and one purple) that I adore. The purple is high gain red side and the green one is normal gain both. I like them both but play the purple one more. Thanks for keeping us company on fridays. You are appreciated. With love from a stranger in CA.

I think something that was missed here is that the POT is based on the KOT with the High Gain mod. If you're going to compare 1 KOT to 2 POT's it makes more sense to use a KOT that has the High Gain mod on both sides.

Welcome back to "The Namedrop Horn"! Its legitimately what caught my attention when I first started browsing gear videos, ooh, just about 15 months ago now, whenever I started to get back into guitar after nearly 20years away Seriously! I thought to myself, "now there's a bit of personality and depth to that... let's see what else they've got ..." ...and, turns out, it was worth the deeper dive. Now I've got 11 pedals, the Rhett's Dry Wig (HT5/VoxAC10VB/VoxT60Bass-Amp) running wet/dry/wet at the house and a hankering for a Hudson Broadcast (flipping Brexit, messing with component availability)... And I couldn't be more into it! Thanks guys! Viva Le Horn!

I can’t believe this is the topic this week. Just yesterday I had some time so I spent a few hours tinkering with my KOT settings/options inside and out!!! Of course I only have one pedal, but I was comparing all my options. I’ve always had a problem running both sides together in stock - I don’t have the high gain side - but I turn the red side on and off, with the yellow side on all the time, as opposed to Dan who leaves both sides on all the time. Last night I settled on making both sides boost and then the left one I cranked the drive to make it overdrive, while the right side stayed boosty (both with a smidge of presence boost). I wanna try Dan’s approach - stock settings with the presence pot up a bit and both sides on all the time. This video is so great and right in line with what I was exploring!!! Thanks!!!!!

Amazing playing both of you, always a good watch and has helped keep a sense of normality in COVID world.

For what it's worth, I ordered a King of Tone with the toggle switch on the outside of the case, four-wire connection on the outside of the case, and an external power out to power other pedals.. All of those things are now offered as options. Yes, the 2.5-year wait was tedious but definitely worth it.

Awesome! My KOT was instantly my favorite. Best overdrive I own among a pile of great ones (Jester, RAT, Timmy, Guv'nor, Bogner Red, BB, etc) One of my favorite sounds is actually the Distortion (regular gain) mode and I'm surprised it's not talked about more. It's probably the most natural sounding distortion from a pedal I've ever heard. I'll be adding a Prince in the near future.

King of Tone vs. Prince of Tone? I’ve been gigging on the Prince for around 5 years. Just received my KoT from analog man after a 5 year wait! My findings so far are that I, for most situations, prefer the Prince over the King. I play it stacked after a keeley comp and a tumnus. The keeley and tumnus give me edge of breakup clean tone and the Prince is what I use to push it over the edge. The prince keeps a level of clarity without sounding harsh, but provide a desirable mid range that lets you sing. I find I have access to more dynamic range through my playing. I can push or pull back and really dial into the intensity of the playing. I 100% agree with Mick on this. This is on a strat. That said, on a les Paul, I prefer the KING. It’s unbelievable how night and day the King is vs. prince when it comes to a les paul. Looks like I’ll be making room for both….

Just got my KOT a month ago after an over 3 year wait. Serendipitously my order came up timed perfectly with the limited antique silver enclosure (like the Bi-comp). I went normal gain on both sides and I must say it was worth the wait. It’s a special pedal.

Picking up each of my KOT, Beano, and Bad Bob from Mike directly in Bethel were fantastic experiences (pre-covid), as I'm lucky enough to live nearby. Seeing the passion put into all these pedals was amazing, but more impressive was how well I was treated every time I walked in the door. I am just a regular guy, but every time I visited, Mike personally gave me his time to talk about pedals, cars, whatever. If the quality of the gear wasn't enough to keep me coming back (it is), the approach to building relationships with customers and being an all around great guy would be.

After five long years my name finally came up on the waiting list, placed my order earlier this week. The MXR Duke of Tone fast became my favourite overdrive pedal and I picked up a JHS morning glory to achieve a sudo KoT while I waited, looking forward to getting the real thing on the board.

Yeah, that's just a really good show ! Still kinda liked the stacked POT's. Might have been nice too dip back into those near the end just to see how that held up post totality. KOT yep, clearly clean and solid all around, but obviously don't know if I'll survive the wait list of now nearly 4 years. Stacking drives and boosts is always too fun. An interesting thing here is the quick look at boost after drive. Different things work differently and then change the guitar (pickups) and there goes the day ! Thing is, when a tone strikes you, write it down before it's gone and you can't quite get it back ! Again, great show. THX

3 things lads, I love this vid, and did not throw a cabbage at the wing deal about airliners. PS, it’s only 1 ;) I was blown away by the Bad Bob! I’m more on Daniels side, I love top end sparkle from the “standard” and I’m also surprised how muddy/middy the POTs are… My personal favorite make-a-KOT is, a combination of the ZVEX super duper 2 in 1 and the Browne Amplification Protein dual drive, Bluesbreaker side. Very close to the KOT. Great video as always, greetings from Minneapolis!

Really fun (and interesting!) show. I've got the old Barber version of the Gainster, and it's a great OD - very tweedy sounding mids. I think the Menatone Red Snapper is another (maybe the original?) version of the circuit.

Great vid! The Olympus Overdrive was the standout to me….then I checked and off course you can’t even order one. My Brownie Protein, Zendrive, The Dude, Ultra-Phonix…… will do. Off course you can’t get the KOT either. These pedals go ultra popular deserved or not then impossible to get. That Gibson has a nice feedback.

I use 2 bluesbreaker style pedals side by side on my board to approximate the king of tone. I use the mojo hand magpie with the switch in the down position and the Wampler Pantheon. I’m extremely happy with my results. I have been on King of tone waiting list since November of 2018 (2 1/2 years). Not really sure I “need “ the KOT, but I’m not going to say no whenever they end up contacting me.

Great episode. To me it sounds, that if you have KoT sound in your head, there is no way around. Also judgeing by yours (not only), KoT is players pedal, more then recording pedal. Like it might not be that audible, but the feedback to your playing is so charming. PS: Olympus sounded unreal here.

@@ThatPedalShow Interesting! Maybe it was a little too much mid scoop? I would think the Supro would help fill that range up a bit. Maybe not as much as a vox or something along those lines, but similar idea!

There's something really special when two circuits are *designed to work well together. Perfect example for me is the Protein, the blue side has less mids than a true Bluesbreaker and the green side has less gain/bass than a true ODR1. Together, neither the gain nor midrange become overpowering, they just complement each other wonderfully. And I think that's what the KoT has going on. 🤟
