I think Ricardo Pepi could be with the Olympic team. He probably won't get too much playing time at the Copa America and he modeled the US Olympic Kits when they were released, so that could be a hint that he'll go to Paris. Ultimately, the US has a decent chance at a medal. We performed well against France in March and we'll face them again in MD1, so that will be a good indicator of where we stand. Besides France and Spain, I don't think there is another team that the US should be afraid of... the US has a decent chance against every other team at this tournament.

That's ridiculous. We have to prep our A Team with big tournaments for the world cup. Nobody cares about the Olympics. Copa America is a huge, well respected tournament..

I would be fuming if they did pepi like that AGAIN. It would show clear as day that Gregg hasn't learned a thing from the world cup. This team needs a 9 that can come off the bench and make an impact. That's Pepi. Only 9 we have with that sauce. That's why his team in Europe won the league.

Honestly if we have a good 9 like Pepi(should be at both) and use over age for our cbs and maybe a winger we have a good chance

Diego Luna has been playing excellent for RSL the last three games or so. Now he runs a lot more than he used. He runs at defenders. He runs more off the ball, and he runs more combining with teammates.

I think the 18 man roster is super interesting from a roster building standpoint, it's a fun puzzle and of course favors versatile over specialists. However, from a player safety and overall quality viewing experience, it makes absolutely no sense. I'm excited for the Olympics though, I literally can't remember the last time watching the US Men in the Olympics and I'm 37. I just remember always watching the women.

I know what you meant, but it should be noted that Pepi is not on the Copa America roster, he's only on the training camp roster - at least one player will be cut from the 27-man training camp roster for Copa, and it's possible multiple players are and they call in someone else.

I'm probably living under the rock. What's the status of Taylor and Zach Booth? Since Taylor is not in the Copa America Roster, I would thought he have a better chance to be in the Olympic squad.

I'd argue that both Pepi and Tillman would get a realistic opportunity to play both Copa and the Olympics, and that GGG/USSF should absolutely be pursuing this with PSV/Earnie Stewart. Either would improve the Olympic squad by quite at bit, so I'd push for it if I were the USSF. Here's my thought process: First, neither is likely to get significant minutes at Copa, so fatigue and/or risk of injury shouldn't be a concern for PSV. Let's say we play 4 Copa games, which I think is the most likely scenario. I maybe see Pepi playing in 2-3 of those games, as a sub in each case (perhaps as a starter in one game, but we'd have to have injuries or really poor performances by players higher on the #9 depth chart for that to happen). Even more so with Tillman. He'll be lucky to make 2 sub appearances out of 4 Copa games in my opinion. Second, both players roles at PSV are pretty firm. Tillman as a typical starter and Pepi as the backup to de Jong (whose contract runs through the end of next season). In other words, preseason isn't a super critical time for them to make or break their roles in the upcoming year. Third, PSV has vested financial interest in them both, just like any of their players. It makes sense to me that they'd benefit more in terms of driving up their transfer market value by allowing them to play in an event like the Olympics where they can clearly distinguish themselves versus other players of similar age. Both would be expected to perform well in that type of event, and that would help raise their profiles among other European clubs and leagues, benefitting PSV much more in comparison to spending those few weeks in preseason training/games.

France 🇫🇷 is the best team in the group and will win Group A easily. The depth, technical skill, and quality of the French olympic side is extraordinary. France is my pick to win the gold medal. France will mop the floor with the USA. ALLEZ LES BLEUS 🇫🇷🇫🇷🇫🇷!!!!! Guinea 🇬🇳 qualified for the Olympics by winning a CAF/AFC playoff match. Whenever I see my Nigeria 🇳🇬 grouped with Guinea 🇬🇳 in the Africa Cup of Nations, I'm not happy 😑. Their defense is so stout and physical that it's hard to break them down. The technical ability of their wingers is vastly underrated. No team in Africa wants to face Guinea in the group stage, and the USA will come to understand this soon. USA "should" be able to beat Guinea 🇬🇳, but it won't be easy. New Zealand 🇳🇿 is a mystery because, on the one hand, they underachieve on the international stage at times. However, the Kiwis 🥝 get up for major tournaments and perform well. They made it to the quarterfinals of the Olympics in Tokyo in 2020. It's a coin flip whether the USA 🇺🇸 can best New Zealand in the group stage. Could the USA not advance out of the Group stage? It's a possibility Even if the USA does advance, they'll do what they always do and lose in the next round anyway. I appreciate Tac's optimism when he said "maybe a bronze medal." Realistically, the USA has no chance at a medal with this roster.

I like the roster you made, Tac. It's versatile, balanced, & well-constructed given the constraints. I'd substitute Aidan Morris for Obed Vargas. Additionally, I'd like to add Bernard Kamungo and Taylor Booth for consideration in the winger spot.

Covid is why the roster was expanded for Tokyo, due to the quarantines. They didn’t want to delay or cancel matches for the men’s or women’s tournaments due to lack of players.

@@MrZen08 The Euro clubs are obliged to release players for FIFA sanctioned tournaments and FIFA dates which Copa America obviously is. The Olympics is not FIFA sanctioned therefore there is no way in hell they allow players like Reyna and Pulisic to go to Paris even if they wanted to.

@@ivanpetrov5185 It's not just Euro clubs. All clubs are obliged for FIFA, and yet no clubs are obliged for the Olympics. And yet, somehow teams are still formed for the Olympics, consisting of people who play for clubs. So, bench players are sometimes released. Reyna & Pepi are currently bench (or loaned) players. Also note that I did not suggest Pulisic, as you've implied I did.

I think with this roster, and if the coach is forced into playing Gregg's system, we won't metal. If the coach has a free hand to be pragmatic, maybe a bronze.

I’d rather have them do all under 23 players of age so they all get that experience of a bigger tournament setting, having 3 older players does give experience they have to younger ones but like I said takes those spots for the younger ones. Never the less excited, hope USA makes it to the end
