    I've said it before and I'll say it again, I absolutely love the respect Penn & Teller have for other magicians. They have a literal CENTURY of magic experience between them, and yet they still sit there giddy as school boys, loving every minute of every trick and even if they have a suspicion of how it's done, if they can't guess EXACTLY how it's done, they are more than happy to have been fooled. Mad respect for these two goofballs

    @@quasar960 I think he definitely forced Old McDonald. The positioning of the song on the list, letter spacing, name length, and the song itself can all influence a decision. That's why P&T wanted to look at the paper I think. And Allyson is the perfect assistant for this trick since she usually picks very predictably when given a visible choice.

  • @Mugsi

    @Mugsi

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@johnnickfanaccount3492 It needs to be something more than simple influence. Otherwise, any number of things could happen on a random whim on Alysson's part. She might have some kind of aversion to that song. Or maybe she happened to have heard a song on that list earlier in the day and chosen that instead. She might even have some strange reason to believe that Penn doesn't know that song. For a magician with such huge stakes and being in front of P&T, it would be a really bad gamble to rely on mere influence. That said, I still can't think of how he could have done the trick! I'm questioning if it really is a force. It's not the first time we've seen a prediction trick where the prediction seems to be inaccessible to the magician during the performance. Or, it really was a 1 in 15 chance, haha

    Moving from magic (which I started in card magic and close up magic when I was 4 I'm 37 now) to Mentalism has had such an impact on me as a hobbyest. Going back to what you said about the "extreme" believers of mentalism. When I do close up magic ✨ I always get bewilderment and this sense of wonder from the spectator and it feels great (dont get me wrong) but when I perform a Mentalism effect even something as basic as using magicians choice and e none existing deck or something out of Corindas book or something way more elaborate like a name scratched in my arm I almost always get a much larger reaction because the mentalism effects thier mind (psychologically) . One time I was performing magic at a church (of all places) I was asked to show some effects to 8th graders and thier parents and doing the close up was fun but nothing beats when a lady legitimately called me the devil and ran out of the building. That is what I want from my performance. So I agree with your assessment. With that said great performance! Loved it.

    'Jadugar' means magician in India. It's what we call a magician in some of our languages. Calling a person a magician today has a different meaning from 300 years where it was probably literal. However if you look very closely it doesn't appear as if Alyson's pen actually circled anything. I think the paper is heat sensitive (thermal) - when he moved the paper to his right side of the plinth, a circular heat element on the surface or just under made the circle line appear in the exact spot that he wanted it to.

Inside the wrapping was simply the frame of the record plaque and nothing else and you had 10 record plaques prepared hidden under the table the list was on. As you open the wrapping paper you use slight of hand to palm the "Old McDonald" plaque into the frame, which this is hidden from us as the wrapping paper is covering it on the back side until you have already had time to palm the correct plaque into the frame.

    Will add my 2 cents to what others have said- choice of songs is narrowed to less than 15( a few are bizarre!). Those are recorded same way as old macdonald. when choice is made, a continuous roller behind the big record with each picture/ song title is rotated till correct pair are behind the 2 little windows at bottom of frame. Almost certainly electric, probably electronic, operated by either offstage assistant or keith with a remote control. Alternately, could be push buttons spaced under back of frame, with an additional off button to keep P & T from discovering it. Keith said he didn't record all the songs, but didn't deny recording more than one. Anyway, great trick- lots of fun.

    The plaque isn't thick enough to have a built-in mechanism. Furthermore, Keith wouldn't have given the plaque to Penn to keep and examine if it did have a secret. So Penn and Teller are right in that it has to be a force. That leaves two possible locations for the trick, the only other props in the act: the paper and the stand. The paper is a possibility. After all, Keith got nervous when Penn asked to see it. But the fact that he gave Penn the paper and still fooled them means either A) the paper didn't have the trick after all, or B) the trick was successfully hidden in time. If the paper had nothing to it, I don't think Keith would have reacted the way he did, so I think Case B is the answer. But that doesn't exclude the stand. The stand is very suspicious. It is very tall. It's taller than your typical podium. Why did Keith want the paper so high up? I think the stand has some important role in this. The Old MacDonald video was very loud and could have served as a distraction for everyone. Maybe the stand has something in it, like a UV light generator to remove or show a special ink when Alison was looking at it. We didn't see the list from above the podium; we only saw the list when Keith held it up in front of the camera. Or maybe the list had a special ink (with a message to Alison?) that could only be seen up close, and/or with the help of UV light emitted from the stand. That's how he got her to choose Old MacDonald, despite the fact that the paper genuinely had 14 other songs. I don't think this is a simple trick to figure out. I think the mechanism here is really advanced or just plain new.

    I suspect that the list Alison has to choose from actually has 14 very unfamiliar song titles, plus Old Macdonald. So that’s the force as she’s specifically asked to choose a song that “Penn will know all the words to”. Then all that’s required is to somehow make the song list such that it transforms to/from the same list as was initially displayed for P&T to finally inspect. The printing of the list seems strange in that a fixed width font is used and not black ink (as per the solid black of the border). Also notice there are a couple of different font choices as well. The sans-serif “i” in “Little Lamb” is different from that in “Little Star”. Heat sensitive paper that changes some of the words/letters of the other 14 titles? Whatever causes the list to change would seem to be initiated by placing the list on the right side of the table. Keith subsequently moves the list to the left side to cause it to revert its original state.

  • @happylittlemisery

    @happylittlemisery

    Hmm, heat sensitive paper is interesting, and certainly possible as the paper seems to be somewhat curved despite being brand new but I am leaning more to the psychological explanation. 1. People are more likely to choose middle options. (Look at how the most popular ones except old McDonald are either at the top or bottom.) 2. Old McDonald is the most popular popular and catchy of these, to the point even people outside of America know it in some shape or form. 3. Look at the instruments, they are there to create a sort of mental tune to which the viewer will conform, which will also favor OldMcDonald. 4. The way Alison is presented is also a factor, he tells her to pick something that Pen will most certainly know, so she has to go with the safest choice.
