Can The Royal Enfield Himalayan Make It Thru The Infamous Poker Flat?

While scouting out trails for our Lost Sierra Ride Guide, we see if we can get a Royal Enfield Himalayan through the infamous Poker Flat Jeep trail, fully loaded with camping gear riding on 70/30 street-biased tires. The trail to Poker Flat is a super steep downhill, strewn with boulders, dropping 1,700 feet in about 1.5 miles. Just when you think the hardest part is over, it gets way worse. And when you get to the bottom, you've got to climb back up the other side to roughly the same height. See if the little Himalayan can keep up with the Norden 901 and Beta 430 RR-S in our group and check out some of the other great points of interest we explored during one of our scouting missions in the Lost Sierra. The "Oh boy" at 18:20 couldn't describe Poker Flat on an ADV bike any better!

Dang...what an outstanding video! I'm very impressed you took the Himi up there and that it did that well, especially with those tires. You are a very good rider. Thanks for sharing. I really enjoyed it. Too bad you couldn't have a fire. That would have been so sweet right by the lake. :)

Much obliged! The Shinko 705s are a fantastic tire, and though they were at their limits when trying to navigate up the steep, loose terrain above Gold Lake (I gladly accepted a shove from Rob and Mike 😅), they do well as long as you're not in anything too deep and loose. The biggest issue I had was arm pump/wrist fatigue, making it hard to modulate the poor performing brakes on the Himalayan, so going down that steep section into Poker Flat I was largely just clutch out/rolling with the punches haha

Fit semi metallic pads, I can get the front abs chirping on asphalt with 2 fingers on my himmi I'm running 705's as well, with heavy duty tubes at 32 psi rear and 23 front. Climbs like a goat

Beautiful scenery, rough road, amazing the RE survived. I guess I should give it more credit. How long was the trip? Could gas up anywhere, or did you carry extra gas with you?

Nice ride! I did poker flat a few months ago in reverse of the way you guys went. All that rock coming out of poker flat was challenging to say the least but my KLR650 handled it pretty good. Definitely recommend strong tread for this one.

I like the Himalayan, but the highway cruise speed is what puts it in the no catagory for me. I need a klr650 with a 6 speed and cruise control. Somthing that can comfortably hold 80 and not be rung out on the highway while still being useful offroad.

The Himalayan will do 80 on the highway as long as there's no wind or hills. 😆Maybe check out the KTM 390 Adventure if you need a smaller bike that can cruise comfortably at 80mph.

There aren't enough middle weight bikes. The T7 or transalp are about it. Maybe a modded DR650 or maybe a CB500X.
