Will the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 match a much more expensive cinema camera like the Sony FX3? In a recent project for KTLA, I was challenged with making the Osmo look like the very premium and gorgeous Netflix show, Ripley. Using CineMatch, I first matched the Osmo to the Sony FX3, and then matched both of them with the Alexa. Did it work? Sort of. While I don't think it is a 1:1 recreation, I think this proves that you can use the little camera for professional work.

You’re a natural with regards to screen presence. That’s a rare thing on KZread. You seem completely comfortable in presenting the information and that translates to the audience feeling comfortable as well. Excellence across the board here.

Thank you so much! I had so much fun making it. What a cool tool this thing is.
I saw a video the other day referring to the Pocket 3 as an “idiot camera” as someone who has used huge cine rigs, camcorders, dslrs, they couldn’t be more wrong. This cam is peak efficiency for experienced filmmakers.

@@AndyRiesmeyer Agreed. I use mine for one man band kind of stuff, I will use my more premium setups for projects that call for it. For example, the pocket 3 is perfect for vlogging music production because I can still have a great looking video and focus more on the songwriting. Less moving tripods, adjusting exposure, swapping batteries…

I don't think you're cheating if you are successful at telling the story that you start out to tell. I bought the Osmo Pocket 3 because of the quality I saw it was capable of. Like you said, some of us creators might be able to tell which camera was used where. But, at the end of the day, the audience that watches your film most likely has no idea, or cares, how you shot it. And that's what counts most, IMHO. Great job. What you have achieved in your videos with the OP3 is one of reasons I subscribed to your channel.
This was fantastic. Starting with the piece you did for broadcast all the way through everything throughout the video. I put it on to listen to while doing other things around the house, but couldn't tear myself away from actually watching it through to the end. Thank you so much for sharing this. Besides being informative, it's also quite inspirational for anyone not yet at the level of a Hollywood production. You did a great job.

Great stuff! Looking for ways to use my OP3 creatively and you're showing some cool ideas and methods. So appreciative of you sharing your knowledge! This little BEAST is so cool! Endless options for framing and placement that it opens a huge world for creativity in staging shots and getting angles that would be very hard to achieve otherwise, especially considering the tiny footprint of this camera and the quality of footage you get. The dynamic range is really amazing for such a unit, making it really versatile and useful, and the low-light capabilities are pretty stunning when you consider what it usually costs to get such footage, in such tight areas, with such potential for customization (Cinematch looks like a really cool app!). Kinda blown away here. (I think I'd have taken some highlights down and tried to saturate/dump the blacks in some of the brighter scenes... Cinematch could probably do that?). One of the most striking things about Ripley is that almost EVERY scene is damned near PERFECT when it comes to staging/composition/ambience! It had me slack-jawed as I saw scene after scene that looked as though it took the DP days to consider every option for camera placement, lighting, etc until they finally came up with the perfect shot. Simply an amazing piece of cinema. I am truly loving this group of your videos. You are indeed very talented.
Fantastic work, that short looked and felt great. Just got a Pocket 3 today, very inspiring!

I think you might be right on the wides.. never used the Alexa LF but I think the sensor size might have something to do with the characteristic "bigness" of the frames. totally speculating but I think that's how they got such a wide FOV without the normal "wide" angle distortion you'd expect on a S35 sensor.

There’s a profile in CineMatch. I think FilmConvert does the sensor scanning / matching math on their own but I don’t know for sure. Works great to my eyes. Great stuff Andy! Nothing against your piece, but I hate that Ripley decided to deny viewers the beauty of Italy IN COLOR just because they wanted to be “noir”, “artsy” and old timey. The characters in the old days lived life in color, so why not give the viewers the same experience. (Just my rant for the day). Loved your footage at the end when you showed it in color. Your comments about the Osmo still being a toy reminds me of years ago when video cameras were getting better and smaller, I you were a pro say shooting weddings etc, you made sure to use a large bulky camera as you wouldn't look professional if you had a small hand held camera. Panasonic even came out with an inexpensive consumer camera that still looked like a large shoulder-mount to look impressive even though the capabilities were no better than any small prosumer camera at the time
If done well, that audience doesn't care what you shot it on.
First of all, we’re watching on KZread compression… Not a good start. I own the pocket three and it certainly punches way above its price range… But is it the FX three? No. Love to see the comparison on my 65 inch Sony TV not coming from KZread. I love my packet three… But you can’t change the lenses and you have limited shutter control. But for the price it’s utterly amazing. You could do yourself a favor and get rid of Premier pro and start using da Vinci resolve… When it comes to color correction nothing can touch resolve. Premier is a joke in comparison.
All looks to wide
What is happening? Shouldn’t have combined two totally random and different, opposite stories into one whatever this was. Ha. Bro. Some nice shots but uhm…..
