Here's my experience. I had a 2001 Ninja 250. I ran that son of a bitch on highways 70% of the time going 70-75mph, and the engine didn't sweat it one bit despite the high rpm's. Not only did it see high rpm's all the time, I definitely made it work as hard as it could. Full throttle, low leans, the whole nine yards. Of course I made sure to keep up with maintenance, but let me tell you something~ specially to those out there looking to get their first bike. If the old 250's were that tough, I can promise you today's 300's will teach you everything just fine; local riding, highway riding, anything. Even wheelies, lol. EDIT: Don't listen to anyone that downplays these small bikes. They do everything a motorcycle does, because it's still a motorcycle. You can bust your ass real bad on these small bike just as much like a big one.

Same can be said for the small 4cyl pickups that everyone mocks, instead insisting on half tons the size of a house. I have a 2001 Frontier 2wd 5 speed 4cyl that does 95 percent of what you need a pickup for. It also fits almost anywhere and averages 26mpg. Shit, it still averages well over 20mpg when towing a small tandem axle trailer loaded up. Yeah its slow as shit but it still gets it done and i know plenty of people with larger trucks should ai need one.

I started with an R3 and it did fine with highway. I would cruise 65-70mph. Overtaking was tough at times because the passing power was weak. At that situation you need to downshift once or twice to get around some cars. The wind is also another battle. Light bikes are amazing, but the wind will knock you off course sometimes.

Rence Fabian I can attest to this. Trying to race home before an incoming thunderstorm and the accompanying strong winds in West Texas my ninja was at an angle most of the highway ride home. Has to let off the throttle at some moments because I couldn't stay on track as I was already countersteering just to stay in a straight line.

Wind shear isnt something you can prepare for though. Depending on who and what is immediately nearby -a bike that light is a lot riskier than a heavier bike. Guess it pays to know the wind forecast and prevailing direction where you’re riding and heading. Bet that bike is fun for stunting around on empty roads.

let me get uh Different landscapes, traffic laws, roads, etc. I don't think it's really applicable. In the states starting on a 125cc to daily is like asking to get hit, not enough power to really get yourself out of a bad situation here. The roads are more open, and people usually drive ~10-15mph over the speed limit. Don't even get me started on highways. Taking a small bike to a canyon or something is pretty fun though, smaller bikes are usually easier to handle and you can just rip the throttle without having to worry about flying off the road at over 100mph in a split second. You guys in Europe got it good with twisties nearly everywhere. I'm almost jealous, honestly. However, the more responsible dealerships here in the states refuse to sell people anything bigger than 300-400 if it's their first bike, maybe a 650 since they're more tame. At least that's been my experience.

Wind can be an issue and of course you should be wearing gear, but a 250 or 300 is plenty good for highway/tollway driving. You will be shifting a lot more than a bigger bike, only thing.

i have a ninja 300, it’s great bike, but i get blown around by the wind even being 185 pounds, and even around town it can be bad. I’m looking for ways to increase stability because it’s not in my budget to go to a 650 class yet, i may buy a different 300 simply because i want ABS on my bike even tho ppl hate on it. I think a bigger tire and aftermarket windscreen might do the trick with the stability, but that’s my only complaint, it’s got enough power to have fun. But yes it does lack a bit on the highway. I live in florida and try to avoid the highway because it can be harsh. Not to say it’s impossible but the wind is god awful sometimes where i get blown into another lane. I’ve topped out my bike at about 115, it takes a bit to get there but 115mph is enough to pass someone on the highway so it’s capable but not the sturdiest of bikes.

I’m sure it’s not as bad as a cb500 naked bike. At 8mph it started pushing you into the other lane. So that’s why fairings are a must!

It should be able to achieve the speed limit. The only problem is that in some places lots of people will be driving over the limit. That means lots of cars will be trying to run you over. As far as the wind goes. I was riding a ninja 600 on the highway, and the wind blew me across two lanes. Counter steering was useless. I was at the mercy of the wind. The incident sceared the heck out of me. I brought a bigger/ heavier bike, and the problem was gone.
