You know, the fun fact is close to accurate. It was 17.3% before the switch to Cyrillic (in 1941) and 72.5% 9 years after (1950)… just in case you were curious and didn’t want to spend the time googling it. It came down to Cyrillic being easier to read and write and a massive government literacy campaign.

9:55 It is also historically accurate. There's no reform Mongolian empire option, because Stalin specifically gunned down every last direct descendent of Genghis Khan or anyone noteworthy. Also, for extra measure everyone were stripped out of their clan and family names. It was the standard Empirial strategy to prevent any kind of fracture.

I'm pretty sure you can request license production for trains, can't you? You don't have to research them right away then if you do that, just have to make sure you stay on Stalin's good side so he doesn't revoke it.

You should play the Imperial Authority in Red Flood. It's like Mongolia, but instead of dying of supply you become the avatar of the god Mahalaka

When Vietnam went from using Chinese symbols to using a severely modified Latin Alphabet (Portuguese with a lot of extra accent symbols to account for it being a tonal language) it too skyrocketed in literacy rate as did Korea when it switched to Hangul. Same thing with Mongolian Cyrillic, all of those writing systems map sounds to symbols rather than whatever the hell Chinese writing is doing. If you know what sound the symbol corresponds to - you can sound it out you can read it and conversely can try your best to turn a spoken word into a written one. Japanese writing systems of Katakana and Hiragana also aren't too bad because they map syllables, it's when Kanji (which is based on Chinese writing) shows up when everything goes to hell. Basically long story short - phonetic writing systems are much easier to learn than hieroglyphics.
