Can the iPad Pro 9.7" Replace a PC?

Ғылым және технология

The iPad Pro 9.7" is undoubtedly a good iPad but can it replace a computer?
Is the iPhone SE Worth It? • Is the iPhone SE Worth...
With a 9.7 inch screen Apple claims the 2016 iPad Pro can replace a PC but can iOS compete with Windows? Even when you consider an older laptop vs iPad it's a tough sell but I do a full review of the iPad Pro 9.7 including gaming performance, iOS 9.3 multitasking, an in-depth look at the Smart Keyboard and Apple Pencil, test of the 12 megapixel camera for photos and videos along with a full comparison of the iPad Pro 9.7" vs iPad Air 2 and iPad Pro 12.9".
Thanks to Matthew Pearce for the iPad Pro Pencil thoughts:

No, it won't. Not unless it runs OS X. iOS just can't replace a MacBook or Windows laptop.

Dilip Tien yeah if you need an iPad, this is a great choice. If you need a PC, then this definitely won't replace it. Apple needs to take some hints from Microsoft because their surface tablets actually are full blown ultra portable laptops.

They didnt say it will replace the pc for everyone. They said it will replace the pc for some. I can imagine that some guys who are jobwise always on the go and dont do much more than email and websurfing will actually buy this over a macbook.

In 2007 Steve Jobs declared that the iPhone runs off OS X. Therefore any iOS device since is running a variation of OS X already. They are jut better optimised for the touch screen experience. In a way, Steve Jobs was and is right. Having so many different options for a touch screen device (like having a mouse and keyboard with a trackpad) is very jarring experience. This is especially of users just want to get basics done. For coding and programming, a PC or a laptop is still the best option admittedly. End of comment. Lol!

What most commenters here don't seem to get is that they aren't the who the iPad-as-a-computer-replacement is aimed at. For the average user, the iPad is most definitely fine as a replacement for a computer. For most people, they use their computer for web surfing, email and possibly basic word processing and spreadsheet uses. And the iPad is perfect for that. Especially since it's easier to use than something like a Surface. If you use Photoshop or are a big gamer, then you AREN"T WHO THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT.

My problem is, that what you said so far I can easily do with my 200 £ Toshiba Chromebook 2. I`m not saying its the same level, cause it`s not -that`s why I`m watching the video. But the question is if the difference in performance worth the difference in prize.

  • @highdough2712

    @highdough2712

    7 жыл бұрын

Dana880313 The question is not, is an iPad better or equal to a cheap PC. This is what people don't seem to get. There are things that a PC can do that an iPad can't, but those are generally things the average user doesn't do. Yes, you can use a Chromebook for less money, but there are quite a number of reasons to choose an iPad over a Chromebook. Chromebooks are made to be used online, meaning you're really limited in what you can do if you don't have an internet connection. They're much more cheaply made, which means you're likely to spend more money outside of the first, initial purchase. iOS is also a much nicer OS than Chrome's, and you're getting a touchscreen, as well, which makes an iPad more versatile. Performance-wise, an iPad is generally more powerful than a Chromebook. There are some great apps that you can use with an iPad that you just can't get on na Chromebook. In the end, it's up to the consumer. iPads CAN replace a PC for many (possibly most) people who do little more than web-surfing, checking email, so word processing and spreadsheets, and watching some videos. Most people don't need more than that and the iPad is great at that.

+Thatoneaidan but you can do all the staff casual people do... It's what netbooks used to do. Yes It doesn't run desktop photoshop or Final Cut pro (though the mobile versions are there and are pretty nice), but it's not for everyday use. How many peoples use computers only for internet? In the biggest energy company in Poland we use internet base program called ISOOG. We have our date there ad we insert there any new deals we make with our clients, as well as checking their payments etc. Only other programs used are excel and mail. So yeah, it can replace PC with ease, especially it allow greater mobility, and even scanning documents on the go, or signing e-copies from clients. I can't believe people here are so narrow minded. It won't replace Your gaming monsters or PC in some hi tech companies, but most of low end work stations - yes it could.

iOS actually has a really high quality games library (behind all the fremium crap) but you can find a ton of the same indies (and other games) that you find on Switch and Steam! And over 1,000 of them work with controller! (check out the Gamevice Live app). Get a tiny Steelseries Stratus for portability. I think if you're a gamer, an iPad would be better for you than for example the new Microsoft Surface Go that has too shitty graphics for games designed for Windows, also would do better than a Chromebook playing Android games

The Microsoft surface cant compete with the Ipad pro the equivalent core i5 surface 4 is slightly more expensive and isn't as powerful. Overall the surface doesn't really have a place it doesn't work well enough as a drawing tablet to work in that regard. And isn't as convenient as a regular laptop. As an industrial designer the surface cant computer with the ipad. The surface only really works as a laptop that you can use a mediocre stylus with. No real professional is going to be using a surface, its not powerful enough or stable enough to run 3d modeling softwares and on top of that the battery can hardly support intensive use for long. I personally use the iPad everyday in my field.

this iPad is sure a monster but the limits of its ecosystem are really holding me back, I think that anybody can use a decent android tablet as a laptop replacement, but with an iPad it's a no do, for exemple samsung tablets were able to run two apps side by side long time ago, not all apps are supported but Evernote plus Chrome should be more than enough for many people, add to that support for usb devices, mouse plus keyboard and screen mirroring and even a hard drive ! all at the same time , that's exactly what you can't do on ipads , even thought they should be able to run all this features without problems but Apple decided not to let their customers have those abilities

It's so portable I end up taking it to most of my meetings and use Evernote to type and/or write/draw. Keyboard is great for document writing. Great for media consumption. Love marking up documents with Word using the Pencil. Not a full replacement for my Macbook Pro, but I use it more that I expected.

Absolutely not a PC replacement, you can't even upload the 4K video footage filmed with the iPad Pro to KZread in 4K, or any other 4K footage, 1080p only. Unless of course you transfer the 4K footage to a real PC and upload it from there. Apple also doesn't give the consumer enough charge over media files. If I import my media such as pictures and videos to my iPad Pro via microSD card, should I not then be able to export my files directly to a miroSD card? You cannot do this either without a real PC. You might say I'm somewhat disappointed in my Apple iPad Pro, and it's lack of user controllability. After all, my media is mine right? Absolutely NOT a PC replacement, and Apple never should have marketed it as such.

Looking forward to trying this out as a new, smaller solution.

Some people can't buy a Surface, at least the more powerful configs. Just saying... It's better of course, much like a gaming pc is better than any surface out there but the iPad Pro as a student laptop replacement does the job. Also, it features some nice capabilities from the mobile world like the camera and adds the absolutely stunning 4-speakers. Anyway Apple shouldn't market it as a laptop killer when they still make some obvious efforts to separate the Pro family from the MacBooks out there. In that sense, the Pros could work with an OS closer to OS X, adding some compatibility and stuff but they don't want to alienate their notebook consumers creating an iPad that is better than their even more expensive laptops. That's the reason why it still revolves around the iOS and give you few options in terms of file management.

I've been really looking into one of these, but when I found out how difficult Apple makes iOS to use relative to file management and connectivity with even a Mac, I have decided against it. You ought to be able to hardwire attach an iPad to a PC or a MBP and drag and drop the files you want transferred to it. Like music, photos, and other important documents. I don't want to have to store those things on line somewhere, and I don't think I should have to add an app that allows me some measure of connectivity. I think I understand Apple's reasoning with iOS, but I don't like it one bit.

Other students are always asking me how to go 100% paper free like I did and I am always happy to explain how I do it. I've considered making a video on it. But I think an iPad Pro can replace a laptop as long as you have a desktop or notebook at home in addition to it. Sometimes I try to find a reason to buy a notebook (because I love tech stuff) but cant find enough reasons with how useful the iPad Pro is.

The iPad pro 9.7: what was supposed to be the iPad air 3 except it's 200$ more expensive

Well it does take some getting used to but switching to an iPad Pro 9.7 to do every day things for me mostly mail, word and PowerPoint is definitely doable. The thing I love the most about it is the battery life and that I can do my job almost everywhere .

The standard Ipad is cheaper than the mini and it’s bigger. Why is the mini so pricey to begin with??

2GB of RAM coupled with iOS and the A9X is a powerhouse. It will not compete with a gaming computer, but it will give most things a run for its money. A good example is the iPhone 6s, which also has an A9 processor and 2GB of RAM, but outperforms the Galaxy Note 7 and S7 family of phones in both speed tests and gaming performance. Don't believe me? Watch speed comparisons done by almost any reputable tech channel on KZread.

+Matthew Jardine you really just used the word "powerhouse" then in the following sentence said it won't compete with a gaming pc

relief Haha, I did. This and a gaming PC was never designed to be sold to the same target market. Chances are that if you try and sell a gaming PC to the iPad's target market, they might think the PC is just as ridiculous as you think the iPad is. "Different strokes for different folks". Some people will still argue that BlackBerry OS is far better than Android. While I definitely do not agree with it, some do.

The A9X in the iPad makes the 2GB of ram works like its 6GB of ram

I actually use an Air 2 as my daily driver. It replaced my 13" MacBook Air back in September of 2014. Might be making the upgrade to the iPad Pro this fall. PS: Austin must be working out or something. Nice work.
