Can is what is known as Krautrock. Which started as a derogatory term. But the German bands later embraced it. There is also a lot of electronic music in that genre. Kraftwerk in particular. You should check out some of their stuff.

Krautrock is the term that was coined in the UK and which then extensively spread across a lot of the English speaking world. Perhaps a more suitable descriptor would be kosmische musik, German for cosmic music.

I think people don't really acknowledge what Can's recording process was at this time. They basically recorded long improvisations over the course of three months, recording sometimes 16 hours in a day, using just three microphones and two two-track recorders. Then, Holger Czukay, the bass player who with keyboardist Irmin Schmidt had been a student of seminal German electronic musician Karlheinz Stockhausen, edited the tapes (plus other audio elements) into the final pieces. That's part of why the tempo changes dramatically in "Halleluhwah;" they simply weren't interested in doing conventional music. This was "rock," but it was experimental rock that was based on ideas pioneered by radical "classical" and electronic composition techniques as well as by radical politics.

Based Smags with the CAN reaction!! 🙏 I knew this one would be a lot to take in, it definitely was for me when I heard it around your age. But I'm glad you appreciate it! It's cool you saw the head in the album cover. For the longest time I only saw a can with what looks like spaghettios in it lol later on I saw the head and brain and realized it was a double image. Love this album art. Mushroom is actually about an atomic bomb. The phrase I was born and I was dead referring to life flashing before your eyes. The following track opens up with the sound of an atomic bomb exploding too. I thought your 2001 reference in Aumgn was spot on also lol that movie came out in 68 and was a big inspiration for the art community at the time. The back half of this album gets especially crazy. But it always impresses me how experimental they were and the ideas they were willing to try. Especially for that time and the equipment available. Thanks again for doing this one and the community polls in general! 🙂 I hope we get to see you listen to Maggot Brain some time in the near future

Obviously not to the same extent as a pink floyd or king crimson in regards to prog but Can and this particular album is the most acclaimed and talked about band/album in krautrock.

If you want to listen to a 1972 prog rock album then listen to Three Friends by Gentle Giant. It is a concept album which tells the story of three childhood friends who took different directions in life as time went by, and.....I'll let you find out the rest by yourself.

Can are beyond analysis. Just feel where they go. Too instinctual to be prog, they are Can.
