After much debate I sold off some gear and picked up an original SL and adapter for my Leica R lenses. I love the results with this camera and the feeling using the manual focus lenses. It's such a great balance of user experience and fantastic image quality. I"m excited to bring it on my trip to the UK next month. Thanks for the channel it's been a great resource.

Another great video Matt and always interested to hear your perspective. I bought the SL2-S when it was launched and it’s one of the best pro cameras I’ve ever used, period. I love the colours and the low-light performance is truly astonishing. I don’t do any video but I’m told that’s good too. All of my commercial work is shot on the SL2-S. I’m intrigued about the SL3 but TBH, the SL2-S is my absolute workhorse and it’s built like a tank. I don’t like the size and weight of SL zooms, so I mainly use M lenses wherever possible, but for commercial work when size doesn’t matter the zooms are pretty good. The 50 APO SL lens however, has got to be hands down the best 50mm lens I’ve ever used. Paired with the SL2-S, it’s outrageous.

Thanks Matt. Watching your videos over the last few days. Has changed my mind I wanta great 50 mm lens to go with my SL 2s . I was planning to buy a used leica 50 mm f2 suma. From MPB …the cheaper smaller SL lens version that just came out while selling my Sigma 65 mm and 45 mm lens to help pay for it. But after watching several of your videos I think I’m gonna go ahead and keep the sigma lenses and buy, the 50 mm light lens Elkon Because it just seems so much more interesting. It seems to produce beautiful photos. I’m one of your Patreon supporters and I really value all of your work. So thanks a lot for your help.. and have a wonderful Christmas.

Having purchased the original SL on the advice of a noted English model photographer I can say that I’m quite pleased with this version. I haven’t used any of the newer ones but the original ticks all the boxes for me. The built in GPS is a nice feature and the ISO down to 50 is definitely a plus. I don’t care about image stabilization so that’s not a concern. I use my SL with an assortment of vintage and M mount manual lenses. I’ve thought about getting an autofocus lens or two but for me the fun is having that M experience a without being in a rangefinder camera. I love manual lenses. They work very well on the SL. Also, I don’t know how much better the EVF can be…the SL is amazing. The only gripe I have with the SL is it’s not as good as newer cameras in darker scenes or at night. For those shots I usually carry around my A7Rii. The biggest win for me with the SL is the price. At 1600-2000 they are a much more affordable way into the world of Leica than the M digitals or the newer SLs. And as far as megapixels. I find that 24 works great for me. Lastly, I read somewhere that the original SL actually produced the best images. That sensor is magical. Thanks for yet another great review Matt.

I have all three and use the original the most as I prefer it’s default colors (they’re all surprisingly different) and rarely need the high ISO or increased resolution of the newer models. Besides there is software to help substantially in both areas. If I did more video it likely be different, but original users should be happy.

I own a Leica SL2-S, and I love it. 24 Megapixels is enough resolution for me and I do sometimes benefit from the better low-light performance. But the SL2-S has no phase autofocus. The new Panasonic Lumix S5 Mark II has it, and I guess this is one of the improvements for the upcoming Leica SL3. The SL2-S is also not heavier than a Leica SL2. Probably, you have mixed up the weights with and without battery.

Just want to say something about all the SL cameras that I’ve never seen mentioned - the strap. Such a simple accessory that made a difference for me. When I was deciding on the used SL vs M10, size and weight was a major factor. And, my first impression of the SL was it was a strong no-go for an everyday to carry with me. The strap design changed that. Longer length, nicely padded where it needed it but minimal otherwise, and curved body contoured. With the over the shoulder and across the chest and back so it hangs at the side, it takes the weight off and although still larger than an M-series puts it out of the way and easy to bring up and quickly available. Strap length adjusted properly also brings some tension at the eye-level shooting position for steady lower shutter speed exposures. With the M-series lenses I use the SL also isn’t all that huge as it may seem. Still no M-series, but the extra functions, and the 1/2 price difference (SL vs M10) compensate for advantages.

Hi Matt .... Nice video and very timely I might add. I am completely sold on the SL system for its simplicity and viewfinder and so far I like the SL2S for its low light performance and now I question the need over all those megapixels when improvements can be made in post production. I am doing my best to be patient to see what the SL3 brings to the table and then I'll make my decision as pricing on the SL2s should get better.

3 differences points of the SL vs SL2 and SL2-S. 1. The SL has built-in GPS. Was it a cost savings, or just a no hump cosmetic thing? I find it useful when I’m just doing casual JPGs and importing to APPLE Photos and need to find a group of images at a location, and that hump doesn’t bother me. 2. The lug strap design. The SL has body flush lugs. Don”t get caught on anything, smooth on the hand. Why did they change the design? 3. The original 4-button layout. Seems the SL was such a new well thought out designed modern camera and the large bars 4-button layout was part of that (and looks cool all non-labeled blacked out with no future white paint wear). Did Leica just standardize 3-button because it is same as the M-series? And, which is ‘better,’ or just a matter of getting use to either?

I love using my SL (Typ 601) with all of my manual focus lenses. It is the most versatile camera I ever used with the best image quality for my FX lenses. Of course it performs better with my Nikkors as my Nikon D4 did and has way better colour reproduction. I also prefer the user interface over the SL2's. The four button system is a clever design with superb customization options. The built-in GPS sets it on par with my Hasselblad H cameras which both have the optional GPS unit attached. The only bad thing about the SL system is the horrible Leica Fotos app which simply doesn't work. The SL only works flawless with the older SL app on old smartphones.

Good video Matt. About the SL3 I can tell you that it will come in 2024 not in 2023. My source, Math from Zurich, has inside info from Leica and in an earlier discussion he revealed that to me. Don't forget to mention that the Leica SL prime lenses are the best Leica lenses made, word from the Leica lens designers as seen/heard in a podcast on the Leica America site, and that are not the cheaper Panasonic Leica rebrand ones, but the real deal Apos. "best lenses" depends on what you want from a lens. Even if you only look at optical performance alone, lenses like the Apo-Summicron 28 have terrible distortion (looks like a fisheye) and rely heavily on digital corrections. Thats far from being the "best". I prefer a Summicron-M 28, or even better, a Elmarit M 28 with almost zero distortion any day! Besides that, IMO being "best" includes handling and usability, which is horrible on SL lenses. I know what Peter Karbe says, but to me SL glass is not the "best".

My one complaint about the Leica SL cameras is that they're ugly. Is there a way to quantify "ugliness." I think more people would be inclined to make their choice based on colour science than specifications. Perhaps I am alone in this thinking. Personally, I have not yet found a video that seriously analyzes the difference between how these cameras render the same scene, looking at secific colour rendering differences, (and contrast) especially in the shadow and highlight detail. Leica colour is special, and exactly how each camera renders Leica colour, to my mind, is the most interesting and significant feature.

Cautionary tale here. One of my Leica SL2-s's failed on a job last week. I had it just over 2 years. I use mine, i dont look at them in a cabinet , but to fails after 2 years is not great. Its been sent to Germany. Apparently I could have registered for another years warranty but checked my email and nothing from them advising that. The "system Error" is a complete failure of the shutter and mainboard. This is a £6k camera thats has completely failed and Leica shrug their shoulders and ask for a lot of money to repair it. Ive had Nikons go for 4 years and 750,000 actuations and still working fine, yet this thing has failed after just over 2. I was hesitant when I bought these as I needed a workhorse, and the sales guy said the shutters are like tanks, clearly not.

It’s been a really bad experience tbh. Having extolled the advantages of the Leica to the few that follow me and how I love shooting with the camera to now have this happen makes me wonder whether my judgement was foolish With Nikon the CS was always there, with Sony nothing, Canon was also great and you would have expected Leicas to be great too but alas that’s just not the case

a 40+ megapixel Leica with phase detect AF and some Panasonic style video features might just be the ticket to get some photographers on board. I've been struggling to find a camera brand I really like. I've tried Canon, Fuji, Panasonic, and Sony. I like Sony and that's what I'm on right now but I'm just not inspired by the images or lenses in any way. I didn't like the Canon RF lens selection so I didn't stay there long. Fuji is a disaster with their poor lens selection, inconsistencies in lens AF performance, and no full frame. I really liked the Panasonic S5ii but it didn't tether into my preferred program Capture One and I really wanted higher megapixels. I think a SL3 and a higher resolution Panasonic with phase detect AF would be the dream team for photo and video.
