John Alexander McGlinn III (September 18, 1953 - February 14, 2009) was an American conductor and musical theatre archivist. He was a leading advocate of the use of original orchestrations and vocal arrangements in studio cast recordings of Broadway musicals, and he made several notable albums exemplifying his philosophy of historical authenticity. From 1987 to 1992 he made best-selling recordings of the complete scores of Show Boat, Anything Goes, Brigadoon, Annie Get Your Gun, Kiss Me, Kate and an obscure Jerome Kern musical, Sitting Pretty. McGlinn was found dead in his New York City apartment on February 14, 2009, of a heart attack. He was 55 years old. He was a great artist and my life partner. May his memory be a blessing.
Teresa Stratas just nails this so beautifully... every word, every note.... expressive and REAL!!!!!!! She is truly a remarkable artist and as for von Stade ... have always adored her distinctive vocal beauty.
Please God, let heaven be like that.
It's wonderful to see how the singers really enjoyed this recording, getting into their roles almost as if on stage; McGlinn on the podium, too! Sadly, McGlinn, Bruce Hubbard, Jerry Hadley and Karla Burns are all now gone. Stratas now almost 85 and von Stade is 77! As the saying goes, 'they don't make them like that anymore'.
I have a deep love forTeresa Stratas

You have excellent taste in singers
OMG this was an incredible cast. Teresa Stratas is one of the BEST singing opera stars ever.... And well von Stade - one of my top 4 mezzos of all time
The world lost John McGlinn way too soon. :( His joy in conducting this music can't be compared with any other conductor....
I make a point of listening to at least a half-hour of the complete recording every day until reach the end and then I start all over again. Such a joy.
A magical moment in time captured for all of us to enjoy. One of the most beautiful and joyful renditions of the classic song. The actors, conductor and musicians in such a great sync. Teresa, what gem.
OMG!! She just match the original version. I never heard more better version of this song.
wonderful Teresa... great talent and person.
What a gift: to be so talented (including J. Kern and O. Hammerstein), take such joy in what you are doing, and get paid for it! Great tape! Loved it!
Wonderful to watch, how this legend was recorded.. And sad to remember all those, wjo can"t be with us. Thank you for this!
This video just made me tear up! great world stars are on the same stage having fun. what an inspiration!
She is terrific!
This was a fantastic set when it came out. I remember buying it at the music store on cassette. I had all six or however many cassettes it was, totally memorized in those drives to and from college. It was epic what they did with this - reconstructing all the lost music, etc.
Great opera singer, I have her on 3 DVDs, La Traviata, Paganini and Der Tsarevitch. All wonderful.
I keep coming back to it, I love it
Such joy so evident.
This, the finished product not "the making of", is the best recorded version of this song.
Wonderful Stratas
here I am 2 years later still rnjoying
Make ahabit of watchingthis clip every day.It shows the sheer enjoyment of music.Any more clips? The sheer exuberence of singers andconductor are ajoy to behold.Just have to watch again.

The best of the best
McGlinn should’ve thanked his lucky stars that he got Teresa Stratas to sing Julie.
WOW!
has to put you in super form just watching.
still get my "daily fix".
Oh, listen, sista I love my mista man And I can't tell you why There ain't no reason For me to love that man It must be something That the angels done play Fish gotta swim, birds gotta fly I gotta love one man 'til I die Can't help loving that man of mine Tell me he's lazy, tell me he's slow Tell me I'm crazy, maybe, I know Can't help loving that man of mine When he goes away That's a rainy day But when he comes back That day is fine The sun will shine He can come home As late as can be Home without him Ain't no home to me Can't help loving that man of mine
Ann - Thanks for the great upload. Do any other recording studio videos for the making of McGlinn's 1988 "Showboat" exist? Is your video a part of a documentary?

You are judging with 21st century eyes … and ears. Leave each generation to its own place in cultural and societal history. In 100 years you … and I … may be judged and found wanting.
