Can South Africa afford Starlink internet service? - Arthur Goldstuck
This week, the Democratic Alliance's member of Parliament, Dianne Kohler Barnard released a scathing statement directed at the Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies, Mondli Gungubele. This came after the Minister's Parliament's written response to Kohler-Barnard's question regarding the delays in obtaining approval for Elon Musk's satellite internet service, Starlink to operate in the country. Since its launch in 2020, more than 4000 satellites have been orbiting space. The prevailing South African legislations require individual IECS/IECHS applicants or licensees to have a minimum of 30% equity ownership held by persons from historically disadvantaged groups. To talk more about this, we are joined by Arthur Goldstuck, founder of World Wide Work. Good morning.

Our NPO is trying to set up internet access to rural schools where there is no coverage by SA mobile companies. The government is blocking StarLink because it would kill it's cash-cow, Telkom satellite service, which is 7x the price and doesn't perform as well. The question we should be asking is what is more important - profits for SOE's or education for rural learners.

I really want Starlink. I live in the middle of nowhere in Northern Cape with little to nothing connectivity.
Why does ANC not ask Google, Facebook and youtube or tiktok to sell 36 % ownership to South Africa Yet they still operate and do not pay taxes in South Africa.

Yeah this is sad but then Elon Musk can't be the exception if these are the laws of this country. If it is true(very possible in this country) the anc wanted to be part of the deal then Elon was right to say NO.

Stick to your guns, Elon. BBBEE has hurt SA badly enough for everyone to see.
Sa can afford anything they like,we have couches full of money laying around🤫
Why SA will always lag behind internationally... SA to international companies: 'You must discriminate & give equity to our cronies.' International companies: 'No!'
its like the Italian mafia up there in Gauteng.
Only for rich people
Elon said that he can sell this to existing telecoms companies in South Africa. Those that comply to BBBEE laws

We should welcome competition.
I am confused. Would this mean that the South African representative of Starlink should be 30% owned? I mean, how else can McDonalds / Starbucks / etc. operate in ZA? Is it because every McDonalds restaurant is 30% BEE owned?
Cadres would be cut out of the money.
Demanding 30% is just an extra tax on Starlink becsause remember they will also require Starlink to pay tax. That means Starlink would be losing 60 percent to ANC---I mean south Africa. Would YOU be willing to give up 60% of your business' returns to operate in South Africa? Didn't think so.
We all know a certian economic empowerment policy stops Elon from launching Starlink in SA
How much is it ? I'll tell ya
The fact that you mentioned Ukraine I think it's some of the reasons Starlink is being denied access because in Ukraine they help Ukraine against Russia and Russia is our ally
