Can Sickles Save the Union at Gettysburg? | Quick Strike AAR

It's July 2nd, 1863 and the Battle of Gettysburg hangs in the balance. Can the Confederate army finish the job they started on July 1st? To find out, we're checking in with a club in Virginia who refought this wargame using a miniature-version of the popular Battle Cry board game rules.
We love promoting and spotlighting other clubs and wargames, so it bring us great pleasure to share today's Quick Strike AAR with you! This fantastic battle report comes from a club who go by the name "Wednesday Night at the Fights!" This group has been gaming together for 25+ years but, this is their first video report! We think they did a fantastic job showcasing a concise, tightly edited historical wargame video in our "Quick Strike" format.
The AAR is created by Rick, Steven, and Brett Wynn. They've generously made their scenario available for free download at their blog, www.uglybugbear.com
Remember, for the 2022 Caesar Awards we've created a new award category for Best Quick Strike AAR Video! The top video, as judged by our panel, will receive a $250 cash prize and that could be YOU or your favorite content creator. Anyone can submit a nomination before Dec. 31st 2021, so just head over to www.caesarawards.com to make your voice heard!

    What a fantastic after action report. I checked the timer, and it was indeed only 10 minutes, yet packed in more narrative than some videos three times the length. Use of an adapted Battle Cry was interesting. A quick and simple set of rules, so no risk of bogging down counting modifiers, yet the well painted figures and scenery elevated the action well above a mere boardgame. Much credit to players, designer and the crew who edited this together. Very entertaining.

    We haven't played Battle Cry here in our club, but it's a pretty popular board game so this was cool to see it modified to tabletop.

    This AAR is a total package. Great action, commentary, good camera work, explanation of goings-on, the strategies etc. I went to the blog and something I really like to see is there-- the source of the miniatures and terrain plus a painting guide. I think those are the flags that come with the Perry plastics. Try as I may, I can never get my flags to have the waving in the breeze look theirs have. Not that mine are horrible mind you, they just never come out this good. Granted most of my black powder era miniatures are 10mm but still.......

    Stuart played very well, but if the cards and dice are not on your side, it doesn't matter. I also think he may have advanced too much in echelon, going for the "protection" of the woods in front of Culp's Hill, exposing his two forward brigades to the potential of a spoiling attack. The Union player can stockpile the necessary cards for a big counter attack while the Confederates on the left need to use them to advance.

    It's the "Command & Colors" rules set. There are quite a few lines which use it, for various wars, and Battle Cry is the simplest one. It's a great beginner wargame and comes packaged as a boardgame so everything's in the box. Unfortunately Battle Cry and it's second edition are both out of print at the moment. Since they've sold out a couple times already, I would expect Hasbro to do another run at some point. But who knows? It's Hasbro.

    I did ancient wargaming back in high school (30 yrs ago) but never did do Civil War. Been to Gettysburg many times as I am from PA. We did go to the wargaming convention in Harrisburg one year and I fought in a Franco-Prussian War game. Apparently i did well enough, the developer sent me a set of soldiers.

    I fear those days are over, Lewis. Our first "season" of 10 episodes took more than a year to produce and we did not intend to do more. But now that we have gone well beyond 10 episodes, we just can't afford to not make content for a year to then release a "season" in 4 months as we did originally. We felt it was best--and really our only option--to release content as we make it and not to go silent for months at a time. In terms of volume, we are actually producing at a higher rate now than ever before.

    What if General Wright’s brigade had been reinforced on July 2. Wright’s Georgians succeeded in breaking the Union centre, but were forced to withdraw when adjacent brigades failed to come up in support. A missed opportunity for sure. I’d like to see this hypothetical scenario gamed out. I’d like to see what might have happened if the adjacent brigades had indeed come forward as they should have. It would be both exciting and informative.

    I thought this was so good I had to go look up how the Battle Cry rules work, and watch a few how-to videos. My only suggestion for this scenario would be to also give the commander-in-chief on both sides a couple of units of "reinforcements" they could assign them to one wing commander or the other one. I also looked at the club's rules and it looked like Little Round Top was impassible to infantry. So how can the confederates capture it? But maybe I am reading it wrong. Regardless. I'm ready to play.

    REQUEST: The most common alternate to this battle is What if Lee agreed with Longstreet and flanked the union to the south instead of fighting at Gettysburg. Yet every game I know of this battle leaves no room in the south of the map to try this maneuver. Does such a game exist?

  • @LittleWarsTV

    @LittleWarsTV

    2 жыл бұрын

    In a tabletop game you can certainly expand the southern flank as much as you want, but in terms of good scenario design an emphasis would need to be placed on the rugged nature of the terrain at this end stretching around Big Round Top and beyond. Also, Confederate intelligence of this sector was nonexistent. You may be looking for a more operational game, as Longstreet was advocating a withdraw from this battlefield entirely, shifting south to a different location. That level of game would be more of a board game.
