Can Orion Be The Last Giga Coaster Ever Built In The United States???

Ойын-сауық

What's up you guys? Today I bring you a discussion video about Giga coasters. Kings Island announced their brand new Giga coaster opening in 2020 called Orion. Once built there will be six Giga coasters in the world which are Millennium Force, Leviathan, Intimidator 305, Orion, Fury 325, and Steel Dragon 2000. All of these Giga coasters have either been built by B&M, Intamin, or Morgan. Since the announcement I've been asking myself what other park in The United States can possibly build a Giga next. In this video I will go through all The Major parks in the U.S. and tell you why I possibly think Orion will possibly be the last Giga coaster built in the United States at least for a while Anyways. If you enjoyed the video smash that like button, Leave your thoughts in the comment section, and subscribe for more awesome roller coaster content. Thank you and ride on!

    I agree with most of what you say, but some of the criteria you list I don’t necessarily agree with. For example, you rule out parks because they have competition in their areas, whereas that could be a reason to rule them in - they feel they have to go big to compete. And also by process of elimination, you settle on Worlds of Fun in the CF chain, whereas they just don’t have a record of that kind of investment. I think in general, the era of gigas has largely passed for U.S. amusement chains, and even Orion barely qualifies. If I had to bet, I’d say we see no more gigas in the U.S. in the next twenty years. I hope I’m wrong. BUT if I had to pick one place, it might be Magic Mountain. They do have space issues, and yes SF are not spending much (especially if we’re heading into a recession), but SFMM is the chain’s flagship park, and they are in need of a new world-beater, perhaps for their twentieth.

    @@tylerkriesel8590 Cedar Point draws 3.6 million visitors a year and is only open around 135 days a year. All the other parks you mention are open almost every day of the year. If a seasonal park like KI draws 3.5 million visitors a year and is open less than half the year and they STILL got a Giga, then other seasonal parks could still get one if their attendance was high enough. You would have to make a return on your investment of 30+ million dollars reasonably quick. Most parks don't already have a good enough line up to just add a Giga and expect an attendance boost of 10-20 percent to pay for their new coaster. Six flags are too cheap to spend 30 million for one park when they are spending millions at every park for small rides every year. For Cedar Fair, Knott's is the only park that has enough visitors to warrant a Giga, but they don't have the room to build one.

    I wouldn’t expect for Cedar Fair to push the giga (B&M models), since they’ve installed the only gigas in all of North America, Only two of which are intamin. The west coast parks appear to not be pushing for one as much as the single rail, of the newer types of coasters. I agree that six flags would be the least likely given they have yet to install even one from the ground up. Pretty much agree with you on the points made. The problem with the smaller CF parks is that the company hasn’t even done a new coaster install, besides a wooden coaster, or some lower height steel coaster. I would think that either of the Busch parks would be the next primed to do a new giga. Other than the Busch parks, it’s highly unlikely, we’d see any smaller parks make that kind of investment, other than perhaps Dollywood? Or SDC.

  • @Sabir_DelNorte

    @Sabir_DelNorte

    In fact, i suspect that B&M projects are slowing in the North America markets after the 2020-22 time frame. Since building gigas isn’t a main focus for theme parks as much as the hypers by contrast, i don’t see what else B&M could be developing that is a main need for a coaster based park. Not every park has a dive coaster but is there really a huge demand for new dive coasters in North American parks? The hyper craze appears to also be slowing as many parks, the bigger ones have or will have one in the coming year. Only other two, or three parks I can see wanting a hyper after 2020, but that begs the question as Patrick said, why spend that on a hyper, rather than going full giga? Doubtful six flags will introduce a giga since they have yet to do so at any of their more popular parks, so that leaves the small family owned three -holiday world?, SDC, and Dollywood? Out of them, I suspect Dollywood would be the first of the three to get a hyper, or jump right to a giga if they go with taller, faster coasters of the B&M/Intamin stock. Maybe they’ll do a single rail T-Rex to distance themselves completely from the other parks having a giga

  • @CoasterFanatics

    CoasterFanatics agreed!! I think it makes the most business sense to invest in a major giga / trex coaster to solidify the park as having a rounded coaster collection. Dollywood seems to be the most primed, but I would imagine the other two also have more land that is available to build a larger coaster structure. Each park already has iconic coasters, introducing the trex or some form of a giga would definitely be a next logical step in terms of a major attraction that isn’t a new shopping/dinning/family fun center of sorts.

    As far as Holiday World goes, I think a hyper coaster would be a cool addition but the Voyage almost looks like a hyper coaster as you're driving by the park, even though it isn't. I'm not sure if they would do that but maybe down the road and knowing them, they would invest in a great coaster that would get a lot of attention since they're all about quality. However I think the most likely candidate for a new coaster there would be a GCI and I honestly can't think of a better addition for that park. I agree with what you said, Holiday World is a wooden coaster park and the idea of a more modern coaster design from GCI coming to that park in the future excites me! As far as a Giga, I agree with the 4 parks you picked out as likely candidates. I'm not sure the next time I'll get to Kings Island but I really hope Orion surprises me because the POVs don't get me as excited as I wish they did. The length of it is the biggest problem I have, it's too short. Like you said in your other video I don't like the name at all either, especially compared to the other coasters in their park. Yes they could have addressed the height controversy too but if it were a longer ride, I think most people would look past that. I'll wait until I ride it though to really see what it's like.

    Kennywood actually isn't landlocked since they own the abandoned strip mall accross the street (ie they could expand into the parking lot and have more parking accross the street), a lot of the surrounding houses, and the hill behind Steel Curtain. They could remove Black Widdow for the station, have it go over Exterminator, and utilise the property where those houses currently are for most of it. It would likely turn around in the parking lot which would mean an exciting return trip being that it would be downhill like Voyage. I don't think it's likely to happen but I wouldn't rule it out. Their Sky Tower there although it is 300 ft. tall is grandfathered in because it's been there for so long. California though is messed up enough though that any park will probably be yanked from that list right away

    Good video right here and you say the facts right! Been waiting for this in years! Think Kingda ka was the last coaster over 200 feet by six flags lol? BGT has the damn room near the back of the park. SEAS has great relation with every great manufacturer and will work with anyone still even intamin! So it could be from any of the three big manufacturers? They already have a hyper down the road and SEAS wants to add different types of B&Ms to the state and is investing a lot in this park now, if only they used the Serengeti plan they would have sooo much space to work with. I hope in the next 10 years they break fury’s records since its a huge tradition for the park and they would do it im sure. I want to say getting falcons fury was a test to see if they want a Giga in the future.

    While I think a huge drop followed by several other larger than normal airtime hills will always have it's place, I think Steel Vengeance's dynamic post mcbr has turned the industries attention in a different direction. Alan Shilke has alluded to the possibility of a mid gauge single rail that could support trains with side-by-side seating and fill the gap between the raptor and t-rex track. Perhaps, Chance rides could design a coaster with giga heights pre-mcbr and a hyper gt-x layout post mcbr and at an affordable price. Also, I think Dorney's proximity to Great Adventure and Hershey Park would be a reason CF would want to start heavily investing in it.

    California's Great America may be landlocked, but one thing possibly in their favor in regards to space issues is that they removed their perimeter scenic railway. This leaves a mile long corridor running around the park's perimeter which could be utilized if needed. It has been infringed upon in a few locations (waterpark and Gold Striker) but a giga coaster has the luxury of going over things rather than through them. Not saying it's particularly likely, just that the space is available.

    You got the video correct, but some parks have height limits of 200 feet. I would have to fact check each park, but when I put that in Google, it brings back the riding height limit. To me, the factors of what parks will get a huge ride are attendance. I run an attendance page with the top 32 parks in the USA here. I also compare SF to CF in terms of what rides they are getting. www.nogodforme.com/USA_Park_Coaster_Attendance_Results.htm BGW is the park that needs a huge ride, because they dropped out of the top 20 in 2016. When parks put in hypers, the ride is great, but it doesn't end up at the top in the GTA listing. An example of this is Mako at SWO. Great hyper, everyone says it's great, but it's not ranked high in the GTA (currently #17) because the people up north don't care about it. Since Fury325 is rated #1 in the GTA, you'd think that Cedar Fair would have put something similar in at KI, but they didn't (scratching my head). They left out the Treble Clef. The Universal and Disney parks would never do this, because their model is completely different. There's a great article about this from The Park DB web site here explaining it. www.theparkdb.com/blog/theme-park-signatures/ So to me, it all comes down to attendance, as I rank the parks from Marquee to Step Children, and there's height limits. Think about this, the #1 coaster in the GTA is located at Carowinds, and their last known attendance was 2,130,000 from 2005. They're still not in the top 20 from AECOM. So that massive investment in Fury325 and being #1 in all the land, didn't move this park like the HP lands did for Universal. To reach the top 20, they need 3,107,000 and they didn't do it. I think these parks need national advertising, the Disney moms have no idea the other parks exist.
