샘. 레고 하는데 5살 아들에게 '한칸 뒤에 꽂아'라고 하고 싶은데 '한칸'이라는 말을 어떻게 하면 될까요? Put it on One bump backwards? Move back one bump? 아 모르겠어요. ㅋㅋㅋ Anybody who can help me?

@@user-xn4mj1wl5r 칸 하면 bin이 먼저 떠오르는데 그것은 좀 어색하고, space 나 row/column 이 무난하겠습니다. Why don't you move it back by one space? Snap it in one row farther back toward you. Move it over by two columns to the right of you.

저는 이렇게 이해했습니다. 화자가 말하려고 하는 주제( 한 번에 할 수 있는 일의 갯수 , 아이와 보내는 시간의 양) 에 대해 다른 사람들이 부정적인 생각을 가질 수 있습니다. 하지만 화자는 이를 부정적으로 생각하지 않거나 옹호/변명하려고 합니다. 그래서 긍정문을 써서 표현하는 거죠. 다만 그게 절대적으로 최선이 아닌 것은 아니까 이 표현을 써서 가능한 범위에서의 최선이라는 의미를 전달하는 거죠. 지금 할 수 있는 것은 can only (do) 그 정도야 so many/much. 이렇게요. 부정문이 아니라 긍정문을 사용한 의미를 한 번 살려봤습니다 ^^

Only를 not으로 So를 그다지 not that much로 생각하면 더 잘 이해되는 것 같아요.

"A man can only take so much." so much 가 영 감이 안왔는데, 제가 요즘 꽂혀서 보고있는 티비쇼 "Castle" 시즌 4 15화에서 이 so much 가 나오는데 단박에 이해되더군요. CIA와 우연히 협업하게 되어 동료들에게 비밀에 부칠 일이 많아진 형사 Beckett이 "I'm sorry. I can't tell." 하고 입을 다물자 부하인 Esposito가 째려보면서 "A man can only take so much." 라고 내뱉습니다. 와! 단박에 느낌 옵니다. 우리가 "사람이 참는데도 한계가 있어!" 라고 할때랑 똑같은 분위기 말투예요. 그래서 샘 영상으로 다시 돌아와 공부를 하고 나니 이제 이해가 잘 됩니다. 샘 최고예요!

As far as I know, this expression was the very first one that you mentioned in the quiz for members. Since I was using this expression a lot in Korean, I thought this was one of the very good expressions for me. But, I found it difficult to perfectly understand the structure. I'd say, this was one of the top 3 expressions in your lectures I couldn't get used to. So, I had looked it up online and watched several different lectures. It took me over 2 years to start being able to use this expression when I talk. But today, I realized there can be much more applications in daily life than I'd thought.

도움이 될까 하여 이것도 올려 봅니다. can only do 의 와 같은 용법으로 쓰인 다음과 같은 예문을 보면 좀 더 도움이 될지도 모르겠습니다. If you as whisper the name, you will be condemned for life. 이 문장에서도 의 so는 이란 말이 아니고 라는 뜻의 단어이며, "whisper the name"을 가리키는 so입니다. 그래서 '라는 한계 (limit)을 가리키고 있는 것이지요. 그래서 ' 당신은 죽을 때까지 저주를 받을 것이다.'라는 말이지요.

Kevin 님의 댓글을 읽고 작문 연습 겸 다음과 같이 의역하여 옮겨 보았습니다. If I remember correctly, this expression was the first in the quiz given to members. I often used a Korean phrase that means the same thing, so I worked very hard to understand this expression and its construction. I would say this expression was one of the three most difficult expressions I've had a lot of trouble understanding. So, to understand it better, I searched the web and watched numerous videos linked to this expression. It took me over two years before I could use this expression in my conversations. Today, I learned that there is so much more to this expression than I had previously realized.

저는 “only 동사” 를 “제한적으로 동사하다” 이렇게 접수해서 이해하니 좀더 가깝게 다가오더라구요 예를들어 I can only spend so much time with my son. 나는 제한적으로 보낼수 있다/ 그렇게 많은 시간을 / 아들과 함께. 즉, 아들과 그정도로 많은 시간을 보내는 내 행동에 제한을 두는거죠. 이걸 부정으로 바꾼달지 혹은 문장에는 없는 limit을 넣고 같이 생각하려니 저는 아득해져서.. 그래도 가장 중요한건 선생님께서 말씀하시는 반복하고 반복, 그대로 흡수될때까지 시간을 들이는 방법이 완성이겠죠. 감사합니다.

여기서 so는 그러한의 뜻으로 문맥에 한계를 보여주는 connotation이 앞뒤로 보통 존재하는 것 같아요. '단지 그런 정도밖에' 로 해석하면 이해가 빠를듯도 하네요. 감사합니다.

저도 이거 처음에는 받아 들이기 어려웠는데, only를 제한된다라는 의미로 받아 들이면 뒤에 so much, so long 같은 것들이 그렇게 많이 ~ 하는 것이 제한된다.=>한계가 있다. 이렇게 연결되어서 좀 더 쉽게 받아들여졌어요. 어쨌든 원어민이 저렇게 많이 쓰는 구나 생각하고 계속 말하는 연습을 하니까 좀 더 쉽게 다가가게 되는 것 같아요.

최신영상 위주로 멤버 예문만들기 해주시면 훨씬 기억에 많이 남을것같아욧!!! 예문만들기하면서 관련영상 찾아보기가 힘들어서ㅜ 최신영상 위주로 예문만들기 해주시면 훨좋지않을까..살짝 의견내보아욧!! 어제 팔로우업끝나고 계속 공부해봤지만 여전히 어렵네요ㅜ

진짜 이런 문장 들으면 벙쪄요. ㅠ.ㅠ 이런 문장은 익숙해지면 듣고 이해까진 해도 우리말을 머리쇠에서 바로 바꿔서 영어를 해야하는 사람 입장에선 저런 문장을 만들긴 거의 불가능에 가까워요. ㅠ.ㅠ 어흑.. focus so long이 아니라 focus for so long이라니...so long이 명사처럼 for의 목적어가 될 수도 있나보군요. 어흑.

1.보는것만으로는 배우는데 한계가 있다. I can only learn so much by watching. 2.식이요법으로만으로는 살을 빼는데 한계가 있다. I can only lose so musch weight by dieting.

only를 barely로 생각한다면 내용이 다 와닿을까..

During business trip abroad, I can only address so much for the work have done in Korea during that time.

제가 느끼기엔 여기서 so much의 의미는 ’ 그렇게 많이‘의 의미보다는 ‘그정도, 그렇게~ 그만큼의 (양, 갯수, 정도)의 의미인것 처럼 보여요. 직역은 ‘오직~ 그렇게 많이’ 이건데 이걸 의역해서 ’~하는데 한계가 있다‘로 연결시키라고 하면 일반적인 한국인 입장에선 더 어렵고 정말 무리일거예요ㅎㅎ only~ so much를 ‘그만큼만 할수 있다’로 이해하면 훨씬 쉬운것 같아요. so=그렇게, much=만큼으로 이해하는거죠. They can only be so understanding=그들은 그만큼만 이해할수 있다. 즉, 그들이 이해하는데는 한계가 있다. so much에서 so를 보통 ’너무‘ 정도로 해석하지만 이 경우엔 약간 that much 같은 맥락으로 이해하면 쉬운것 같아요. ㅎㅎ
