Love it! About 3 years ago, I moved from NM (after a 19-year stay). Deep sand is zero on the fun meter. You did well, my friend. Perfect bike for out there (and off road) was my Sherco 350 trail bike. Electric start was a huge help down in the sand! 1. It’s high! 2. It’s dry! 3. It’s remote! 4. 45 degree difference from day and night! 5. You can die out there without help! (Maybe bring a buddy next time?). 6. Get up on those pegs in the sand! Your feet are your steering wheels! Your bike size and weight really was a great choice, but even my old KLR felt heavy in the sand. No one said it was easy. There’s a reason so many NM residents have gone to side-by-sides and sold their dirt bikes (…and this is coming from coming from a Moto-addict).

I live in Santa Fe, NM and my son and I feel super blessed to live in such a charming high desert. When you venture out there to camp on two wheels it feels like you are an explorer on a new frontier, so much public land to roam. Because you are a new adventure rider and i have been doing it for the past 15 years my humble two contributions to your endeavors are: experiment with various tire pressures and find creative ways of lightening up your gear.

Unfortunately we sold our home which was about one minute from the Blake's Lottaburger you passed by the National Cemetery. I was there in August with my KLR and was going to ride the NM BDR but had a change of plans because it was over 100 degrees and the sand seems to get harder for me in the heat lol. I have moto-camped off a CB750, an Intruder, a Shadow, a Goldwing, a Xl250 and now a XT350. I have camped in WA, ID, MT, ND and MINN. Mostly north, but I have car camped in AZ. Look into a Solo Stove the littlest one is perfect moto-camping. The tent I have used has ranged from best REI half dome too a tarp over my xl250 to nothing. Shiny side up my bro of the road. I live in ABQ and the only sections of the NMBDR that I've ridden are pretty much the same as in the episode. No camping though so far, but that will change this year with at least some overnight campouts between ABQ and where the NMBDR hits CO. I've ridden all over that area around Cabizon Peak (the Devils Tower looking peak that was in the foreground at one point). Love that area, and it's within an hour of me, so it's an easy day ride out in the desert, which is always fun......especially for a guy from Louisiana. I occasionally ask for constructive criticism with my videos, and seldom get any, so I'll give you some since you asked. Not crazy about that rear camera, but you didn't overuse it, so I don't hate. I like your honesty with how you're feeling about the whole ride as you start out, and I'm pretty sure many of us solo riders feel the same way, or similarly anyway. It's intimidating a bit, so all those feeling are pretty natural I assume. Anyway, the ending could definitely use some work since it just cut off abruptly, but hey, you got me to watch all 31 minutes and 12 seconds, so I'd say ya done good!!! Looking forward to the other videos in this series!

People all to often think they need larger bike they cant ride, so not look weak. A 150cc to 250cc is more than enough for 99% of people. My bikes are a used $2000 1986 honda trail trl flex 200cc 190 lbs , and a used $4000 2006 rokon 2x2 bike 220 lbs that can tow 2000lbs. Its more of a awd tracktor that can only go 40 mph at top, but can tow has a hitch, use multiple fuels from kerosene, gasoline, ammonia, and floats. The rokon will go anywhere, and is a worst case scenario transportation. The honda flex trail bike is a easy ride trail rock hopper that wont kill yourself on. And its honda retro cool.

It's true, but if you came from the TAMpodcast and are British like I assume, You've got no shortage of lovely. I'm pretty sure the grass is in actuality greener... Can I get a translation on the "Onya Cobba"?

great videos, wearing smaller gloves (preferably moto/mtb style) will really help with bike control, much better feel on the bike as a whole speaking from 40 years of off road riding - also that silly little crash could easily be avoided if you panicked less/ relaxed more and just let the bike turn or even go straight on instead of grabbing brakes, keep adding seat time and you will get there fella, we all crash it's just a part of it so please don't let it put you off - keep going but just try to use brakes only if you have to especially if on loose gravel or even sand and mud - bikes, tyres and suspension work better when rolling naturally rather than under brakes

I recently retired and have the same bike, ready to head west from the east coast. How many miles was on your bike before you left on this trek?

I do like. My bike never had a stock seat, so I can't compare the two, but this one seems good. I'll stay with it.

To butcher a line from the Princess Bride, "You seem a decent fellow, I'd hate to (see you die)". You are on KZread so you can see all the skills demoed by a host of experts. Make time to see / practice/ learn with some experts before you take on anything big. Just going slow isn't always an option and practice is key. The vibe is great, have fun storming the castle.

Why would you advertise a fake intent ( leave your turn signal on) Can't think of anything more ridiculous. Someone will actually believe you are actually going to initiate a turn (rightly so) and pull out directly in front of you. SIGNAL WHEN TURNING ONLY. Just because other people do dumb stuff doesn't make it a good idea.

When it presents a real danger to those practicing it, not only could you fight it, you should. The whole reason to have blanket traffic laws countrywide (for the most part) is so everyone on the road is armed with the same knowledge ie: having an idea what the other road users intentions are and making the appropriate adjustments.@@andyupsidedown
