Can Monegasques still speak Monegasque?
Although the official language in Monaco is French, "a lenga d'i notre avi" (the language of our ancestors) is almost everywhere. Starting with the street name signs. They are displayed in both French and Monegasque. Sarah Incari and Paul Charoy went to meet Monegasques and residents: is the Monegasque language falling silent?

If any Europeans are curious, this is what learning a language in North America is like. You learn a bit in school, but there's no place to keep using it and everyone you know forgets it.

As a North American, I disagree. The onus is on you to keep foreign languages in your life same way for anyone across the globe. There's little excuse nowadays. Listen to podcasts in your target language while you're commuting to work, washing dishes, running, walking your dog. Set all your devices in target language. Select target language as default on apps, youtube etc. Same with Netflix, popular series are offered in 3,4,6+ languages put the English subtitles on and pick the audio in your target language. Instead of doom scrolling junk each night, spend 10 minutes reading target language news, load all your social media/follow interest groups in target language. You have Google translate, online dictionnaries and the whole internet at the tip of your finger to look up words, expressions etc. Your smartphone follows you around, in waiting rooms, lunch break.. Don't know how it was in the 80s or 90s..but it's definetly so easy now. Spanish, French, Swedish, Russian, Mandarin, German, Arabic, Japanese, Italian...unless you're trying to learn some highly regional and dying language like Monegasque, you're comparing apples to oranges.

It's more about English dominating the world, it's the same with all English speakers: even the British despite living in a continent that has a multitude of languages, their overwhelming majority do not speak any other language. They expect everyone to speak English and do not bother. In the continent, the bare minimum is to speak 2-3 languages, not to mention dialects that can be considered languages like occitan or neapolitan.

Why would you make French the official language when you were never part of France?
@Magyarosivatuvaluk

Maybe because of the geographic proximity. France 🇫🇷 basically is surrounding Monaco on all sides. Besides, contrarily to say Catalan which has millions of speakers, Monegasque has a tiny number of both population and speakers. I’m not saying it is an excuse but this is maybe one of the reasons that lead to that

French is an official language of Monaco because Monegasque people speak French. That’s like asking why Switzerland would make German an official language if they were never part of Germany- It’s simply because many Swiss people speak German. 🤷♂️
Very sad to see this. I can't understand what is so extraordinary in French language. Similar things hapenned in Brussells, when predominantly Dutch/Vlaamse speaking majority turn to French,in late 19th century. Also in Luxembourg, but in Lux. is still strong native germanic language known as Letzeburgisch.

Same also in the case for Basque in the French Basque Country. I am from Saint-Jean-de-Luz and historically this resort town once predominantly spoke Basque until the revolution happened. Basque is becoming less and less spoken every year as older generations of Basque speakers started to die out and younger people being more inclined to speak French.

@@ArdaSReal Well, if you think about you'll realise that the example these rulers were setting for you is one of anti-nationalist, cosmopolitan worldview. Educated people of all epochs and periods have always sought after a universal language and culture to share knowledge and ideas through; to unite and not to divide. The fact that you expect a ruler to be nationalist today says some unflattering things about the world we find ourselves in.

In the Middle Age Monaco was no more than a tiny fortress belonging to the counts of Provence first, then to the City of Genoa (but surrounded by Provence's lands). In 1297 there were civil troubles in Genoa and a powerful family, the Grimaldi, was involved. The Grimaldi took the fortress of Monaco and stayed there first with the hope to be able to go back to Genoa and take or at least share the power , but they failed and eventually stayed in Monaco as Independent lords and then princes under some sort of spanish or french protection. So the principauty managed to exist till our times - except for a short period during the french Revolution and Napoleonic time (1793-1814) when it was purely merged into France.
There are probably more Russian speakers there than those of Monégasque...
So in short it's a no. No one can actually speak it. The way these people answer are like Americans when asked if they speak French 'yes...... I mean, I took some French in school.... definitely can read, oh you want me to say something? uh, you caught me off guard, how about.. bon-YOUR?'.

The Vatican City needs to be kept independent to ensure the neutrality of the Catholic Church. San Marino is the world's oldest republic and predates a united Italy, so why should it be Italian when it's older than the very concept of an Italian national identity? Andorra is Catalan-speaking, not Hispanophonic or Francophonic, so it should not be part of either Spain or France (though you might have an argument for Andorra joining Catalonia if Catalonia becomes independent). Liechtenstein, like Monaco, has its own monarchy and I doubt you'll be able to convince them to voluntarily give up power. And do you propose Liechtenstein joins Switzerland or Austria? Because the Francophonic and Italophonic Swiss wouldn't likely be in favor of adding a new Germanophonic canton and the people of Liechtenstein wouldn't likely be in favor of just joining an existing canton. And the dialect of German spoken in Liechtenstein is very different to that spoken in the majority of Austria (besides Voralberg, which itself has tried to join Switzerland on multiple occasions, further complicating the issue). However, the law of Monaco actually does state that in the event of the total demise of the entire Grimaldi family, that Monaco would become part of France. So if you're okay with that on your conscience, you could get your wish fulfilled regarding Monaco.

@@_blank-_ Yes, but it's not so long that it is part of France. This is what I meant.
Things change, language dies and people adopt vernacular language as mother tongue. That's always happened everywhere. You don't need to be conquered for that. Business, exchange is enough for that. Especially when the language become isolated. But if you want an "excuse" like Corsica has, there was a treaty signed in 1918 placing Monaco under the protection of France, aligning the principality to French political and economic interests. It was replaced in 2002 by a new treaty based on more equality and reciprocity than the previous one giving back more control to Monaco regarding their laws of succession or their foreign affair. De facto, Monaco was a French protectorate for almost 100 years and the European council had asked to clarify the situation between the two countries before accepting Monaco as a member, the treaty of 1918 raising questions about Monaco's sovereignty.
