Can machines read your emotions? - Kostas Karpouzis
View full lesson: ed.ted.com/lessons/can-machine...
Computers can beat us in board games, transcribe speech, and instantly identify almost any object. But will future robots go further by learning to figure out what we’re feeling? Kostas Karpouzis imagines a future where machines and the people who run them can accurately read our emotional states - and explains how that could allow them to assist us, or manipulate us, at unprecedented scales.
Lesson by Kostas Karpouzis, animation by Lasse Rützou Bruntse.

But yeah it's the same consept, scanning peoples brains to know if they can be a criminal or not, and like in the introduction, you can just be extreamly scared and panic because someone is trying to murder you which can get you killed for that reason.

Good video... I'm currently working on my CompSci Master's Degree Thesis on this very topic. It's quite fascinating.
I like the way robot patting a sad boy (last slide). It's so real!
I feel that there is no better way of communication than in person since there is no comparison of the interaction from person to person than with a machine that barely understands what you feel or what you are experiencing.
Will we get that far someday? I think that technology is currently vital for us, it is vital for our environment, and to continue developing ourselves. The jump to the emotions is very transcendental, because it marks the line between the ethical and the unethical, leaving it to personal judgment.
This short video reminds me of the movie "Her" (2013), which I highly recommend for people fan of science fiction :P
In my opinion, I think if technology can recognize our facial expressions in real-time and just like the Animojis on the iPhone, being able to know if we are sad or happy is pretty possible. They can already imitate them so with a little bit of information they just need to categorize them in order to identify them by emotions.
Can you guys plz make a video about the Myers brigg type indicator??? It would be awesome knowing you guys!!!!!
I just watched Terminator Genisys :P But I think the benefits of this outweights all the possible dangers. If we have a goverment crappy enough to make us go to jail just because they think we are going to do something we are probably fucked with or without machines.

I dunno man. I don't think the government really wants to create happy healthy citizens, or at least not all of them. I can imagine that they would want to control the way we think in terms of voting and also everyday life, like how propaganda in the media works. But this would be more direct and manipulative. I think that fundamentally I'd rather have the freedom of choice than this.

Its like saying that if a government wants to destroy the world and its citizens it doesn't matter if they have nuclear weapons or not. We are fucked anyway. This statement is utterly false. Having an intention and getting the means to carry out your intent makes all the difference in the world.

I believed that the use of technology to recognize our emotions is a tool that can help us see a person’s state of mind and see if they are in danger. It could also help people who feel lonely as older adults to have companion. I totally agree with this use of technology for its multiple benefits.

Even though the use of emojis or images to reflect our emotions in a text is not necessary in our day to day, it is a digital technology that has helped us more in our generations to express ourselves and reinforce communication, it also makes interpersonal relationships more enjoyable.

Can machines read your emotions? I think technology has become a very efficient and essential way to communicate among others, if we want a more realistic development of a conversation, emojis or avatars are a really nice resource to show what we want to express. As the time passes and the industries develop more characters, we are able to show more ways of emotions in the digital world.

I think that in the future, is very possible that the machines can identify the emotions or thoughts of everyone, and the most important, the machines and robots can do it easily. We must learn how we can do machines that help everyone in many positive ways, but without creating machines that end up being smarter than us.
In order to be trained successfully, neural networks require: A. Lots of pre-classified training data B. High-quality images C. Data from different cameras D. Data from microphones and wearables
0:46 Isn't there 3 syllables in emotion? I thought it was e•mo•tion.
The capacity to identify things and expression are already used on Facebook to some extent, Facebook algorythm can scan images shared even on private chat and if they are against Facebook`s user agreement the bot flags you to an admin and you can be automatically banned

I would think the last thing they'd get is irony. So computers are just going to take things literally and be really mad all the time.
3:50 Minority Report reference!😍
there are a lot of people that mask their emotions on the surface.....some, to the point of controlling how they socialize and lead their life. there's a reason I stay in touch w a wide array of people - to stay grounded and nurture when individuals display attitudes/actions of empathy and altruism regardless of their class. social media has the capability to do that in a grander setting, to all its users. it can also distinguish between innovative creations - promoting things that encourage people to be more resourceful vs junk. the advantages are endless for good. the video need not have dreadful outcomes. frankly, much of life as humans is put to waste when the masses ignore higher pursuits/values. great example - capitalism/over consumption fuels most commerce, motivates people to buy things and do things not necessary or good for the environment, societies or themselves. perhaps comp
Every technological advance has its advantages and disadvantages, if we plan to improve our machines we must measure the consequences and establish limits so that it does not get out of control. When the machines reach the point of recognizing emotions we will be prepared and we will try to use the information for our benefit.

There is a robot called pepper made by Japan that can sort of read emotions right?
Psycho-Pass comes into my mind while watching the part regarding predetermined thoughts of crime by the authorities, in which our thoughts, feelings and emotions can be quantified by technology.

There are plenty of examples of that scenario in fiction. :) So yea, Psycho-Pass is one of them.
Proud to be Greek! great episode!!
literally thinking about psyco pass all the way through especially at the part about detecting crimes before they happen.
Is anyone else concerned about what really would happen if computers gained control over us? I seriously think about that a lot, and I hope that if it takes the negative turn, that there is still a way out of the mess.
Interpreting a person's emotions from their gestures, posture, intonation, or expression is difficult even for humans, evolved to capture the smallest details and micro-expressions during a chat. Assuming that a robot can do the same at our current technological level is difficult, but it would have consequences as well as benefits.

Yes i gree with there are always pros and cons with robots
I think that it is all about our responsability, we are the ones who create this machines, we are the ones that made them every time smarter. So, we can make this technological advances, but it is totally on our hands, we can use these machines and robots to make our world better, or we can lose our freedom and became totally dependant on those things.
oh my god the hal 9000 at the end was a creepy touch
Was that lavender town at the end?
Unless it is programmed to not respect another human, or sentient life form. Eventually through learning they will know that what they are doing is unwanted, and not invade the privacy of others. Even young humans who are still learning know basic empathy, and compassion through learning. That they are sad, did I cause them to be sad, I did not mean to cause them to be sad, attempt to make them happy again. It is a very basic line of commands, and if enough is learned that invading others privacy is what caused it then eventually they will stop it all together. It will be up to humans to properly teach these new life forms empathy, compassion, kindness, caring, and respect. If improperly taught then well... we have enough movies showing that outcome.
3:52 What's the cry?
PERSON OF INTEREST!!
this reminds me of psychopass
There is the over training factor. Everyone who is doing neural nets knows that there is a point where training more reduces the efficiency. Is a curve reaching max. You need more data sets different than the previous. Also there are many neural net algorithms. Most of them are time consuming and real time training and application requires big processing power, thus energy. Not so much memory but fast computations. Right now the CPU and the batteries are the limiting factors. Once we have quantum computers and hydrogen sells, we can easily create androids like Data from Star Trek.
Does emotion create consciouness of machine?
Hope nobody missed the Minority Report reference at 03:44

Scary.
I think that in the not too distant future technology will be able to perfectly understand what we feel and even help us cope with those emotions. Right now , fortunately we have the opportunity to express ourselves simply with the help of emoticons. However, I do not rule out the possibility that technology has improved and that not only humans are able to understand us on that matter.

Nice, that´s right bro.
I always see the pre-crime stuff and sorta feel like... Well there's ways to take pre-crime in less grimdark ways than jailing people on suspicion of committing a crime. Like stopping a crime before it happens could be more just a case of confronting the potential criminal or if you do want to get a little distopia with it, manipulating the world around the potential crim to make crime in general or the specific crime they're building towards untenable.
At its core the brain is something that is sending a series of electrical impulses that are either on or off which correspond to past experiences, sound familiar?
