Can Julian Assange stand for the Australian Parliament?

This video addresses whether there is any constitutional impediment to Julian Assange standing for the Australian Parliament at the next election.
It discusses the issues that were raised by his previous attempt to be elected to the Australian Senate in 2013, while he was taking the benefit of asylum in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, and the fate of his WikiLeaks party.
It then discusses Assange's current circumstances and whether the 'conviction' disqualification in section 44(ii) of the Constitution would apply to him. It concludes that it does not - both because it is a foreign conviction and because his sentence is for time already served, and hence complete. Assange would, however, have to ensure he was not disqualified under any of the other section 44 factors, such as dual citizenship or bankruptcy.
