Can it be saved? Seized 3.0T Engine on the Audi A6 I picked up for $2200.

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Well, we can't win them all! I recently got my hands on a '09 #Audi A6 3.0T for a bargain price of just $2200. The seller mentioned a potential steering module issue after changing the starter, which left the car refusing to start. Naturally, I dived into some troubleshooting, hoping for an easy fix. However, what I discovered was something no car enthusiast ever wishes for - a seized engine.
So now, I'm left with the daunting task of swapping out the engine, which comes with its own set of challenges, like not being able to turn the torque converter to release it. Nevertheless, I'm gearing up to tackle this project head-on and share the entire process with you.
But here's a twist in the story - while looking for a replacement engine I also stumbled upon a 2011 A6 3.0T, which I couldn't resist buying at a fantastic price. I'll be sharing the journey of bringing that car back to life too, along with a detailed engine teardown to understand why the engines gave up.
Life often throws curveballs, and car ownership is no different. Join me as I navigate these unexpected hiccups in the world of automotive repairs, learning and growing along the way.

    I love your engine disassembly video, I have the same car, the dream is to be able to remove it and replace all the parts that may or may not be damaged, but I don't have a garage and engine lifting tools.But I'm glad to see you do this.

    My car recently started leaking coolant near the front belt, and the steering wheel occasionally stiffened and I thought I couldn't drive, but I didn't know what the problem was, and I was very distressed.

    Ayy! You found me! That's awesome. Where are you looking for the engines? So far, car-part.com has been the best place I've found. It searches all the junkyards nationwide.

    @Mechani_Cole I'm using ebay and car-part as well. I was just going to buy a somewhat low mileage motor for it but after researching these engines, I'm gonna be replacing the timing components as well

    @Mechani_Cole I'm in Washington state (Seattle area). There's one 30 miles away from me but it has 145k miles. I want to get one with less than 100k.

    Hey mechanicole loving the work you do, would love to see you replacing a vacuum pump on a Audi A6 2011 C7. I'm still learning to fix up my Audi but New Zealand is very hard to get parts needed for oil leaks. And the mechanics here aren't as good as the skills you have.

    Appreciate the comment! I'll write this down and make a video on the vacuum pump. I have 2 3.0 engines I can use now. Give me a few weeks and I should have a video up for ya🫡

    Why does the engine become seized ?and how many miles does that car have

  • @Mechani_Cole

    @Mechani_Cole

    Great question. Engine seizure is caused by overheating or lack of lubrication. Without oil, the engine's moving parts will no longer move smoothly against each other, and the engine will overheat. The first symptom may be a loss of engine power. You may also notice a change in the engine's sound. This car has about 170k miles on it and I have another one that has 130k miles on it with a seized engine as well. These cars are often driven hard and lacking in maintenance as is.

    Correct. I just thought maybe it's a bad starter or ignition module. Turns out it would crank because the engine is seized

  • @micheldiarra7
    @micheldiarra78 ай бұрын

    Im curious, why can't you tear it down completely and get to the part or to issue that caused it to be seized and then rebuild with new parts? Wouldn't that be cheap?? I am asking because I see some cheap '14 Q7 and C7 A6 around here with seized engines and I'm thinking about getting one of those to rebuild

  • @Mechani_Cole

    @Mechani_Cole

    This is possible under a few conditions. #1 the block has to be in good condition with no real damage to the cylinder walls. If that's good, then it's possible. #2. The crank bearings is what seizes usually. This ruins the crank and most of the time needs to be replaced. So if the block is good, and the crank is replaced with new bearings it is possible. However, it may be cheaper and easier to find a used engine with low miles and put it in with new parts. I think a common issue on these cars causing the seized engine is the fuel pump gasket on the engine. It leaks gas into the engine essentially hydrolocking the block. I'd you smell gas in the oil, it's likely that. Rebuild is possible, but replacement is usually more effective. Plus when rebuilding you need a machine shop for some parts. This could also add 6-8 weeks onto the rebuild. I rebuild a subaru engine recently and had that happen. Almost took 10 weeks

    @@Mechani_Cole Thank you for that information. I watched Humble Mechanic's teardown of an A7 3.0T and again crank bearing related. I think I will stay away from a seized one unless it is 1-2K😂. 6-10 weeks to get an engine rebuilt? I'm definitely not that patient😅 I have a 3.2 Q5 and your videos helped me replace the upper chain tensioner without dropping the engine.
