Can I whiten my dental crown?

Ask Dr. Rich Episode 4
In this episode of Ask Dr. Rich, I answer a viewer's question of if there is anyway to whiten the color of a dental crown that is in their mouth. Unfortunately the only way to change the shade of a porcelain crown that is too light or too dark is to remove the crown and have a new crown made. Whitening gels that will whiten your natural teeth won’t whiten a porcelain crown.

Dr, you mentioned you can't darken a crown but I just watched 2 dentist explain how and demo it. What am I missing? Are you saying a dentist can't or a lab can't or both? Appreciate a reply. I have crowns recently made and when matching color, they keep coming back too bright. On my 3rd try and very frustrated

Hi Joe, you can't change the color of a crown once it's been cemented onto a tooth. Before it's cemented, the lab can change the color.

One of my teeth are Permanent porcelain still in perfect condition but has yellowed over time, it used to be bright white like my natural teeth but I didn’t properly look after them and whiten them for the last 6 years just brushed as normal, is it possible to whiten my teeth as I did before using strips and will that get my permanent porcelain tooth it’s in with a screw that kind of one, back to original whiteness? Hi, sorry to hear about your situation. I'm in the USA so I'm not familiar with the dental scene in the UK (though if you need implants, I can highly recommend Bill Schafer (www.theimplantcentre-dentist.com/clinicians) and Pav Khaira (surreydentalimplants.co.uk/about/)) What material were the crowns made out of? Porcelain shouldn't stain over time, but sometimes the cement used can stain and will make the crowns look darker.

It could be plaque, tartar, excess cement or a cavity that is causing the odor. Since the work was just done, there shouldn't be a cavity. I would guess it may be some leftover cement.

Do you know what type of material it is made out of? Porcelain crowns won't change color but some types of porcelain are translucent enough that if the tooth underneath changes color or if the cement leaks it will look a different color. Zirconia crowns and porcelain fused to metal crowns won't change color. Acrylic crowns may change color over time.
