Can I use My Cell phone From Home Country when In The Philippines ?

Cell phones in the Philippines for expats can be tricky, especially if you are not familiar with the local market and the different options available. Here are some tips to help you choose the right phone and plan for your needs.
First of all, you need to decide whether you want a prepaid or a postpaid plan. Prepaid plans are more flexible and cheaper, but they require you to buy load cards or top up online to use your phone. Postpaid plans are more convenient and offer more features, but they also require you to sign a contract and pay a monthly fee. You can compare the different plans offered by the major providers such as PLDT, Globe, Smart, and Sun Cellular on their websites .
Secondly, you need to choose a phone that suits your budget and preferences. The Philippines has a wide range of smartphones available, from the most advanced iPhone and Samsung models to the modest yet powerful Xiaomi, Vivo, and Huawei phones. You can check the latest prices and features of these phones on online platforms such as iPrice2, which also offers coupons and discounts. You can also look for secondhand phones on websites such as OLX or Carousell, but make sure to check the condition and authenticity of the phone before buying it.
Thirdly, you need to consider the SIM card size and compatibility of your phone. The Philippines uses GSM technology and has two main frequencies: 900 MHz and 1800 MHz. Most phones sold in the country are compatible with these frequencies, but if you are bringing your own phone from abroad, you may need to check if it supports them. You may also need to unlock your phone if it is locked to a specific network in your home country. You can buy SIM cards from any provider at their outlets or kiosks, or at convenience stores or malls. The standard SIM card size is micro-SIM, but some phones may require nano-SIM or mini-SIM cards. You can cut your SIM card to fit your phone using a SIM cutter or ask for assistance at a phone shop.
Finally, you need to be aware of the quality and coverage of the network in the Philippines. The Philippines is known for having one of the slowest internet speeds in Asia1, but it is also improving its infrastructure and offering fiber optic connections in major cities1. Depending on where you live and work, you may experience different levels of signal strength and data speed. You can check the coverage maps of each provider on their websites or use apps such as Open Signal or Speed test to measure your connection quality. You can also use Wi-Fi hotspots at cafes, restaurants, malls, or public places to access faster internet.
Cell phones in the Philippines for expats can be tricky, but with some research and planning, you can find the best option for your needs. Happy calling!

Before I left the U.S. I got a Google Voice phone number. Then later I disassociated it from my U.S. phone number and canceled my Verizon service. I make many calls to and from the Philippines and the U.S. using Google Phone. It works via the internet. Also, we use FB Messenger a lot for face time with people everywhere. Also I have a tiny, cheap Philippine Nokia phone and buy load every month or so. Also, my Samsung/Verizon phone works fine with the internet here in the Philippines, but of course I can't use it if there is no internet connection.

Interesting. The overall cellphone system in the Philippines sucks big time compared to Canada and the US. The most notable thing when driving around is the lack of cell towers and/or cell antennas on the top corners of high-rise office buildings for example. The various plans, load, data, duration and all that are confusing even to Filipinos. My wife, a Filipina and I have the type of 'plan' we need figured out so we don't run out of load/data. Being retired from a lifetime of working in computers, I personally spend a bit more than I need because, God forbid I run out of data. ;) As well, we both have Canadian VOIP numbers so we can call home free or family/friends can call us for free. That is good for anywhere in the world as long as we have WiFi. And if we are away from a connection, people can leave us voice mail etc. We even use the VOIP numbers to call each other sometimes if the cell signal is crappy but we have good WiFi.

Very confusing topic! Na nosebleed ako 😂😂 But, maybe this will be informative for US travelers who have Verizon and a GSM phone like me: you can add a travel plan that lets you use your US phone like normal (more or less) for 30 days, for an extra $100 per month. It's a way better deal than the Travel Pass $10/day plan. For example, if you stay a month, that's $100 vs $300. Hope that helps some and safe travels!

When I was in the PI 2019, I went to a Globe store, they set me up for a month worth of unlimited data, text, and call. I have an unlocked iPhone. I just took out my SimCard from Verizon, ( made sure it is securely kept ) replaced it with the Globe SimCard while in the country. I recall paying 2,000 php. I did like it, felt more at ease not running out of minutes or data. I also do not have to keep on buying loads . I made sure the area where I will be traveling was covered by the provider, before I decided to purchase the service. Just do not know if the process is still the same.

Hi guys, I'm in my late 60's and I will be moving to the Philippines in about a year to spend my "Golden Years". But, I am coming there at the end of this year for a month or 45 days to see if I like it, you know to see if it will be a good fit for me. Anyway, I am a little tech savvy ( just a little )but this video just confused me to no end! So, what if I just leave my phone here in the States and buy another when I get there? I think that this can be done at the airport, yes? If I can buy a new phone wouldn't it be set up and ready to go. Or couldn't I have it set up and ready to go at the store? Also, I have done research on the Philippines and watched a ton of KZread videos and I am getting conflicting opinions about the whole Black (American) man dating scene. I am not interested in chasing skirts but I am interested in having a long term relationship that might (might!) lead to marriage. Would this be possible? I'd like to hear YOUR thoughts on the subject. Thanks

You can buy a power strip that separates out one leg of the 240 so you end up with 2 separate phases of 120 volt power. Also the power strip should connect to the ground or earth automatically as an internal function. The US actually uses 120 volt not 110 as you will hear and technically power can fluctuate from 110 or 115 up to 130. This usually occurs the farther away from the nearest sub station you are. If you have trouble with regular lightbulbs burning out sooner than they should try buying those rated at 130v they are sometimes called “tough” bulbs. As far as the power strip goes make sure it’s one of the ones that converts the voltage for you and double check the hertz. The US runs on 60 hz and U.K. on 50 hz other countries use one of those two. This can be problematic and you will need an adapter if the hz is different. 30+ years doing electrical on everything from custom homes to hospitals colleges and factories so yeah been there done that lol Cheers
