I love his show and thisjust summarizes and lays out all of the basic methods he uses on the show. What i love about this guide kzread.infoUgkxKkYeOoCV_w2vPX0CSyVWkhew2c4FYk0d is that you don' need to read the whole book cover to cover ... You can skip to the chapter (lesson) you want to read about. The book is arranged almost as a problem-solving guide ... Here is the problem and here is what you need to know/do to correct it. This man knows his stuff ... But more importantly knows how to teach people how they can work with their pups themselves!

''Everyone wants to own a Rottweiler until they want to do Rottweiler things''. Never a more true statement was said ha! I've owned & worked with search and rescue Rotties for a little over a decade now and I've heard stories of them redirecting onto new handlers although I've never experienced it myself. The stubbornness is something we look for in new search and rescue dogs as they tend to be more independent. Once you build that bond and the dog trusts you that stubbornness tends to melt away leaving you with a work mule that can work for hours without stopping if you let him/her. This Rotties size would be perfect for what I look for! Just one thing ..... You mentioned a Rottie with a tail isn't normal. It's (not getting into the should they or shouldn't they be docked discussion) been illegal to dock any non-working breed in the UK an most of Europe since 2006. So all my dogs have had tails for over a decade now.

I adopted a Rottweiler mix from the shelter. I had no idea what I got myself into. I felt discouraged and cried. I questioned what I got myself into. She’s powerful, stubborn, possessive, aggressive, sweet and intelligent. I love her and will not give up on her. Everything you said about the breed is spot on.

She’s still here. Going on over a yr. She’s calmer, loyal, playful, Crate trained, eager to please. She is still wild when I take her out. I try to avoid areas I know there will be other people and dogs. I don’t want to put her in a situation that will set her up for failure. Still has a long way to go, but At home she is just wonderful.

i wonder, how is she doing now? see i got 2 rottie mixes, both with labs one also with cane corso. And yes they are both like you describe yours. But, they know thanks to me training them diligently that there is a time and place for everything and im not really having serious problems with them. I felt just like you did with my first one, the corso mix, she was making my life miserable for the first year, but in that year i figured her out and now she is the best dog ever, she is 9 years old, strong and beautifull. Thanks to her i got the drive to become a trainer and started to educate myself, its a long and painfull story to how i got to take her, but i was not gonna give up on her no matter what. And i didnt and she repayed it all in kind, she is the best dog and companion one can think of. The younger one is still a bit rambunctious but thanks to what i learned in that time she never really gave me any trouble after the first 2 weeks at home, granted those were 2 weeks of pure hell (if i was not around she would scream her lungs out but if i was around she would sleep) but i learned that can be a phase they get when they get taken from the mom a bit too soon, since i took her after 9 weeks, after that the only thing we had a bit of an issue with was jumping on people after she was a year old, she became a bit too big for that sport to continue so unfortunately for her she has limited options when it comes to that these days, she can only jump on people wearing the suit or a sleeve these days but still gets to do what she wants to do the way its supposed to be done so its safe for all involved.

i trained both of mine for that as well, i work with people with severe dog fears and im proud to say, both of my dogs have a real knack for that work, they are both big and look intimidating and can act on command but are total sweethearts and really get these people to open up and face their fear in a positive manner. They are both non reactive to fear which is kind of the best trait one could hope for his dog to have because that way they can deescalate situations that would otherwise end up pretty badly.

As a previous Rottie owner, over 20 yrs, I always took joy and pride in the training of my dogs. I would travel back and forth from upstate NY to Montana each summer. I was so proud every time someone complimented me on the training and behavior of my dogs. They really are a wonderful breed. Many truckers at rest stops would shout out to me, "lady, no one will ever bother you with that well trained dog"! Being that I was traveling alone, I didnt have the heart to tell them that the dogs they really had to worry about were the ones dragging their owners around the rest area! I now have a Crow Dog, a rescue off the Crow indian reservation in Montana. I have an apt to bring her up to your center later in January. I'm looking to have her tested for her CGC title. Keep up the good work, and look forward to seeing the staff!

Hi Tom. Glad that Axel got to work with you! He is our pup and his impulse control issue mostly relates to his prey drive with squirrels and now rats (we live in NYC). Also thank you for sharing the tidbit about his play growl. Most people do not understand and think Axel and his sister (also a Rottie) are being aggressive when they are just play growling.

So funny to hear about another rottie with a prey drive. Mine helped my shiba inu get a bunny in the yard and now she's thinks she's a great hunter! Hopefully this training his helping Axel. We use the "Leave it" command a lot in our house, we also attach positive instruction to hunting habits (sniff, track, etc) and reward them when they do it on command which gives us more control over some of those hunting habits. We still haven't been able to save some of the wild life in our yard though.

I felt that quote, " Everybody wants a rottweiler, until the rottweiler wants to do rottweiler shit " 😂 The teenage years of a rottie are very important, that's where they tend to be more stubborn... but after that all love 💚

All dogs go through that teenage stage, you’re right, they can be stubborn at times. Raised four rotties and really had no issues with any of them. Have a malware now, interesting breed, they might not be for everyone. Much harder than a Rottweiler? All I know is a LOT more energy.

I love how you addressed the timing to start the training with the dogs and the realization that the momma dog does it day 1, why shouldn't we? I know people that think it isn't right to start training until the dog is almost a year old. I have asked why they want to establish the bad behaviors before trying to set the boundaries for what is expected. It is really funny on the crazy excuses you get in response. Thank you for your education and presentation.

In the horse training world, an unknown (to the horse) object, is frequently called a “booger”. Desensitization to the booger is done in the same way, exposure to build confidence, then more and different boogers are introduced until the horse learns to trust the rider/handler.

Lol well I just learned something new! I've been working with horses for almost a decade now, and so far everyone just calls whatever the horse is scared of a "scary object". 😂 Love desensitization exercises though, especially when they finally take that big breath and you know they're thinking "oh thank God it's not going to eat me!"

my younger one had really bad impulse control when she got near 1 yo, she was a sweet pup but when she got in that teenage stage she got bad at impulse control but we fixed it right away so that now at 28 months we have 0 problems with it and i was still super proud of her for doing this because it was one of the toughest challenges for her up to that point and she took it like a champ, head high chin up puffed chest and all, now tho im noticing her having like a "sassy" period like, she gets something in her mind and then starts to tease me or the older dog with it, for example, she gets her toy puts it on my leg like she wants me to throw it but before i can take it and just before, she takes it back, turns around and gives me the "booty sass" like only a dog part corgi (which mine is not) should be able to do.

Thank you for verbalizing the dogs frustration mixed with a strong dog. I have a very sweet Rottie mix and anticipating her lunges or movements is something I share with people who are around my dog. She can accidently hurt someone if she moves quickly, so for safety it's important to watch her body language and anticipate and plan for what she naturally wants to do; and tell her what you want instead.

I would love to see you guys work with a sharpei or a sharpei mix and how you guys would handle suspicion towards strangers! Thank you for making dog training fun and for giving accessibility to all who want to help their pups! Lot of love!

Love your channel! Recently discovered it and your training dog-skills are superb. Next month i will be an owner of a Siberian Husky puppy. Very excited about getting her. She will be 2 months and want to start training her right away. I do also have a toy breed who is 9 years old. Therefore, the new puppy will need to learn boundaries, as she will be much bigger in no time at all. Thank you for such knowledge!

Great video, I've had a couple rotties for boarding and I have to treat them exactly as you did. They're an amazing, smart, powerful breed but you need patience and to be able to read their body language or it can go south quickly. It's always an "uneasy" start but you did amazing maintaining composure and giving him his time and setting the right example.

Had a rottweiler along time ago The best dam dog EVER! he was a big baby (164 lbs) and he was also intact! he was so smart it was almost scary. He was 13 when we lost him and 21 yrs later I still miss him. They learn fast if you work with them. But you always have to be the leader with them and they have to trust you completely.

I think because this difficult attitude Rotweiler was the most rewarding dog i've ever had in my life. It was an ultimate plesure to take part in IPO competitions against GSDs and Malinoises and leving them behind, knowing that to achieve this "shepperd level" me and my dog had to put much more effort and time in our training. I would say that i had no life because of him but it would be far from the truth by miles. He WAS my entire life. Best dog i've ever had. Despite that he was insanely high-drive and dominant dog. He supposed to be medium to low energy but one year pass away, hormones kicked in and his happy go lucky character flew away.

My Rottie was extremely aggressive at 8 weeks old, scary boy. I sent him to board and train facility like yours and now he's great! This training works! Thanks for showing a Rotties behavior, I love the breed. On the flip side, in my pups classes there was a golden retriever who was aggressive with his owner, would flash his teeth at her. I felt my guy should have been doing that

Tom, you pointed out that, the Rottie had it’s tail, and said that, they are usually docked, it’s illegal in Australia to do cut their tails off, as it should be.

Have you ever seen Bear and Ryan? Bear is a super vocal Rotty, and would love your take on it as a trainer. It seems normal to him but he always gets backlash, all in all, Bear seems super sweet, he's just loud lol

My rottie is super vocal as well. It makes people fearful of him for sure, but that's just him saying hello, please pay attention to me. His "stranger danger" bark is a totally different sound.

Thanks just did a successful impulse control session using a toy and +reward(food & praise) The commands were "leave it" and "give" when I wanted my dog to give me the toy. Worked really well at home , next test will be in the "outer portal" 😆
