CAN I SAVE THIS RENAULT R5 ENGINE? | PT 2

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

You guys have seen me rebuild some engines before, but nothing in this condition! From two-cylinder air-cooled engines to 3 cylinder liquid-cooled diesel engines...now onto an inline 4-cylinder gasoline engine. Do you think I can save this one??
In this video I remove the drivetrain on this front-wheel drive Renault R5. It's really interesting to see the transmission mounted longitudinal and in front of the engine (that's super cool in my opinion). Many modern cars have a different setup to save space within the engine bay.
As you can see from many angles, this car is pretty filthy within the engine bay. Everything is greasy and oily! Probably because every seal on this drivetrain was leaking. This actually isn't the worst thing that could have happened, as many components are not rusted through nor is the body-work rusted. I think all of that lubricant saved this car somehow! Lucky me.
If you want to see more progress on this 1979 Renault R5 car, don't forget to subscribe and turn on your post notifications. Thanks for tuning in!

I love these cars! They are so simple and easy to work on. Brilliant design! Trans comes off by it's self without removing the steering rack. It pulls right out from the top. I had a syncro drop in mine from the tapered rollers becoming too loose. I pulled the tyranny out, dismantled fixed it and put it back in in half a day. Didn't even have to drain the radiator. The hoses were long enough to just pull it up and lay it on the head out of the way. I wish I could find one for sale like you did. They've been scarce for the last 30 years.

I fully agree with you and I love them too! Despite the compact size, it's actually quite easy to work on everything as you mentioned. Unfortunately, they do have rust problems and a lot of the sheet metal is VERY thin...which doesn't really help! Luckily I have some parts out back that will assist with the rebuild and hopefully I'll get to it sooner than later. There are always deals on Marketplace or other online platforms. Just keep an eye for one and you'll have yourself a new project. Thanks for your comment. Regards Andreas

Great project. I will follow your work. My mother had an Renault R5, 50 years ago. My brother and I, as young drivers, were also allowed to use it. We especially enjoyed driving the Renault in the snow and doing various experiments. It went up snowy little mountain roads better in reverse than in forward. A funny car. Best regards from Germany.

Hi Manfred, thanks for viewing and sharing your experience with this Renault R5! I can tell from your comment you really enjoyed that time with the Renault from your mother. I can imagine it was very suitable for winding German roads in all conditions. I hope I can bring this one back to life in the near future and share my experience with it once it runs and drives. Thanks again, greetings from Canada! Regards Andreas

Thanks a lot Matthew!! You‘re alway on of the first to comment and I have a feeling this engine bay will look completely different once I‘m done working on it. I appreciate your comment👏🏽

I've rebuilt lots of bikes in similar condition as your Renault but can't imagine tackling a car in such a state! You are a brave man!

I believe it would be easier to rebuild a bike in this condition, especially since there are only two wheels to worry about! I really want to get this car roadworthy, which means the drivetrain will need attention and after that I can always look at the cosmetics. There is a lot of work to do, but I'm not afraid! I saw your videos John and I have to say you have some very nice bikes!! Your Norton sounds and looks amazing. Thanks for sharing. Regards Andreas

Thanks Andreas. The Norton was a frame up restoration from a start not dissimilar to your Renault - a labor of love that I owned for 26 years. BTW: Your Renault engine looks like a relative of the engine BMW sourced from Renault for their first in-line four, the K100RS. It was one of the most reliable engines they ever sold.

I totally agree, very neat cars with great fuel mileage (when they run...not like the one I have)! I have some big plans for this car, but I just haven't had the time to put in enough effort to get more videos out of it. More videos will follow soon. Please be patient and let me know if you want to see something specific on this car. Thanks for watching and leaving a great comment! Regards Andreas

I think the only logical thing to do is just throw that John Deere lawn mower engine in the Renault.

That‘s actually not a bad idea! The previous engine I rebuilt would be a little bit underpowered...but with that 4 speed manual, you could always compensate for that😆 This will be a tough one to tear as many components are not moving! We‘ll see what I can salvage and what not. Thanks for tuning in😃👍🏽

Do you think an L15A honda engine + transmission would fit in the renault?

  • @WorkshopRebuild

Hi there! I don't know much about that engine or transmission, but I know the Renault engine + transmission is a longitudinal setup and the engine and transmission you're talking about is transverse. Without knowing any numbers, I don't think it'll work...but you can always make it work. With a lot of fabrication work anything will fit. Regards Andreas
