"People often ask us if they can vertically lift a load with a Dutton-Lainson pulling winch, but the answer is right there in the name.
While many call non-brake hand operated winches intended for pulling applications hand, manual, or ratchet winches, we call them pulling winches to emphasize that we do not recommend using them in vertical lifting applications.
While it is possible for these winches to lift a load and hold it in place when you let go of the handle, you're leaving it and the winch in a very precarious position. If there is a load on the pulling winch and you lose control of the handle when the ratchet pawl is disengaged from the drive shaft gears, the handle will violently spin and your load will freefall to the ground, which could seriously damage you, your load, and the people around you.
Because of the potential dangers, a pulling winch should never be used to vertically lift or lower a load. Instead, you should use a winch with an automatic brake built into it, such as a brake winch, a worm gear winch, or an electric winch without a clutch lever. There aren't any levers to mess with on these types of winches, and they are designed with vertical lifting applications in mind.

If they are unsafe to lift, they are only safe to pull on level ground - and unsafe to pull vehicle out of a ditch or up the side of a ravine.
...automatic brake or worm gear won't help you one bit if the cable breaks.
Another dream shattered...it's a good thing.

Thanks for the video. I need a winch for a simple tilt welding table and got a two way one thinking it was right. I think I need a break winch. I believe they are the same ones used on construction lights that you can pull behind a truck.

Thanks for your question! Many people would use a pulling winch in that scenario. One of our models with a hand brake (such as the DL2000AB- www.dutton-lainson.com/proddetail.php?prod=14730) is designed for applications like you described. However, you could also use a brake winch if you wanted the additional safety factor of the automatic friction brake in that type of winch.

Thanks for your question, Darius! Our chain drive brake winches are intended to be used on boat lifts and operated with a large boat lift wheel instead of a handle.

Is a brake winch or a worm gear better for lifting? I fear a brake winch has more parts that could fail.

Thanks for your question! Both D-L brake and worm gear winches are suitable for lifting applications, and there are pros and cons to using either type. We offer a much wider variety of weight capacities in our brake winch lines and they offer a much faster operation than worm gear winches, but they require a minimum load to function properly. Worm gear winches do not require an minimum load to function properly, but they are much slower to operate than brake winches and are only available in two weight capacities.

@@DuttonLainson i just purchased 3 of your worm gear winches with the hex drive for my jack system to lift my truck camper on and off my truck. the previous jacks had regular pulling winches which looks like a disaster waiting to happen. i almost went cheap and bought china winches but i like supporting USA manufacturing.
