This was filmed in early 2020 well before shelter-in-place and in a very compressed timeframe before the museum opened for the day and a flood of children on field trips took over. As soon as travel and public gatherings resume, we highly recommend going to visit the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix, Arizona to celebrate their 10-year anniversary.

He's not even close to how the instrument is supposed to be played, but I like his enthusiasm. They could have at least shown him a video of a master so he could have had at least had a reference point. The curator also made a supremely false statement. The "mùsica jibaro" (countryside music) has NOT disappeared. It still is flourishing in the island's countryside. Anyway here is video of a true master of the instrument. kzread.info/dash/bejne/a5VottCnhrvNZ8o.html

I really appreciate your interest in our national instrument "Cuatro Puertorriqueño". But the museum curator has no idea about the rhythms played on the Cuatro and it's not the clave. The piece he was trying to show you is called "Verde Luz" and is a Puerto Rican Danza written by Antonio Caban Vale "El Topo". I would like that someone who knows well the theme and who knows how to play, can teach you properly. Thank you for your interest in our music; it is beautiful your honest interest about music. PS: When the pandemic has been resolved, I invite you to visit our island; you will have fun and I promise that you will fall in love with ours musical culture.

Same! Such an underrepresented instrument.
As an actual Puerto Rican, he obviously didn't master the cuatro, in the same way I don't master the cuatro when I go to my Abuelo's house and play it like a guitar. This is an instrument partially tuned in 4ths, so if you know scale/chords shapes on one, you can approximate them on a similar instrument. That knowledge is convenient and can quickly adapt you to an instrument, but it does not indicate mastery. Rob obviously acknowledges that in the title which I actually appreciate a lot. The way Rob feels his 4/4 pulse when he plays is not at all how a jibaro will feel the same pulse (if you would like more insight to how the pulse is felt in Puerto Rican folk music, look up tutorials on how to play a guiro). OKAY with that out of the way, I still love Rob! I'VE been subbed since 2016, so this is not hate at all. I think Rob is talented enough that if he really wanted to learn music in the Puerto Rican tradition, he could.

This guy knows what he’s talking about. Rob is talented, no doubt. But his straightforward rhythmic approach and lack of syncopation made his cuatro playing slightly cringey, especially against the clave pulse.
I'm from Puerto Rico and I play the cuatro. The realization he came to about the tuning, comparing it to a 5 string bass is the same way I describe it to others who ask me about the cuatro. "Think about it like a 5 string bass." And the cuatro is such a versatile instrument that can be used for so many different genres. I've played 80s rock music on the cuatro. Really happy Rob decided he wanted to learn this instrument, I truly believe it needs to be heard all over the world.

As a Puerto Rican it’s super interesting to hear what non-Puerto Ricans come up with when they play the instrument. I got my Irish-American husband a cuatro for Christmas many years ago and it was really fun to see how he learned some traditional holiday tunes, but also incorporated some of his Irish fiddle background into things as he got more comfortable experimenting. It was fun! I do hope this inspires people to learn more about the amazing cuatristas and traditional music of PR, which has such a rich history, like most famously, Yomo Toro. But I also hope this inspires further experimentation and creativity with this amazing instrument!

And, I have to say, you did a great job making some cool music on the cuatro. It really was a great fusion of rhythms!
As a Puerto Rican it’s happy to see people discuss our music
"there was an ancient instrument that had four strings" *Davie504 wants to know your location*
can't wait tomorow, it'll be the first of october !!
That's so cool. the instrument and Rob's skill with stringed instruments
Dude I love the MIM! I gotta try to catch you one of these days!
Rob at 7:17 talking about recurring licks in things like "the blues" Me: the Licc 😐
I’m puertorican and I can say that the cuatro has never gone out of style or has been stopped playing.

Boricua here. It's such a unique and lovely sound, the closest thing that resembles it sonically, is the balalaika, in my opinion
Watching another video I was just thinking how cool would be for Rob to review the Cuatro Puertorriqueño. Lo and behold I find this video on the top of his feed. Thank you so much for doing this 🇵🇷
Puerto rico has some of the most beautiful sounding string instruments, playing the tiple and cuatro together has such a beautiful sound Its one of the few things I genuinely love about my country
Holy shit, that sound was amazing. I'd love to hear an album (or a long medley) of you jamming with the cuatro.

That’s not how an actual cuatro sounds but yeah it sounded nice

@@Alenator-pq9wf Really late reply but what do you mean? Do you mean that he wasn't playing a real cuatro, or just that he wasn't playing traditional music with it? Cuz if it's the latter, I already know it wasn't traditional. It still sounded amazing.

@@DrakiniteOfficial holy shit a response 2 years in the making! But basically whatI meant is that he wasn’t playing it in the traditional style which is fine, and it sounded great. My pet peeve is with people thinking that that’s how cuatro songs are usually played which isn’t true. I just wish what they played was closer to my culture.
The Adam Neely anti-clickbait is really strong with this one
My grandma actually bought on of these about 15 years ago and have it to my uncle and we found it in his stuff when he moved and there was a pack of new strings so we restringing and now I plan on learning it so this video was actually pretty crazy that it came out right after
I was waiting for this day that he finally plays one of these instruments. Doesn't ever disappoint in his ability to use his many years of strings knowledge and bring that to an instrument like this. I would love to see him play a mandocello or irish bouzouki.
WEPA! Cheers from borinken Rob!
*next video:* can i learn all the instruments in the world in 3 seconds? yes, yes he can.
I’m a cuatro player and this is funny. Thanks for the brief history on our national instrument.
Hi Rob, are you ok ? where are you ? miss you
Great video, as usual. But hey, your first video with Brandon Acker came up in my recommendations (I re-watched it) and I realized that he hasn't uploaded in a month or so. Love your videos with him. Any idea what's going on? Hoping he's well during this crazy time.
To anyone being like "wow, he learned this instantly". This instrument is tuned in fourths like a guitar or bass, starting with a b. It's like a 5-string bass without the high g string. If you can play guitar or bass, you can play this thing. I'm not saying what Rob played here wasn't awesome. I'm saying, that it isn't mindblowing at all, that he can play it, like many of you make it out to be.

That and he's basically playing guitar riffs and chords. I would've loved for him to actually play Puertorican cuatro Music.

It has the G string. He’s playing the 10 string version which has 5 notes(that are tuned exactly like a 5-string bass) which are either doubled or octaves
Rob's videos always cheer me up
With 100%, there is a series here. Traveling to different museums learning about instruments. I could watch this for hours.
its good to see people acknowledging the existence of Puerto Rico and not treating it like the tropical island equivalent of Finland

I've always wondered how this instrument is called and I love how it sounds! And again, I am amazed how quickly you happen to play awesome things on a completely new instrument :)
Having been in that same museum its really cool to see this filmed there.

Dude he sounds so WASP-y but the moment he says a single word of spanish he sounds like he just stepped off the airplane. Amazing.
I’m a guitarist from PR. I kept my grandfather’s cuatro and promised myself to eventually learn it. I think I’ll be doing that now! The interesting thing about the instrument is that its the representative instrument of a very sunny and cheerful population, yet its sound (at least to me) is sonic melancholy. The chorus-ey feel makes melodies sound like a lament
He has a great ear to be able to immediately response correctly! I enjoyed his interpretation with our Cuatro. Juan
