Can I Grow in 5 YEAR OLD Potting Soil? || Black Gumbo
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
I have several pots in which I have grown vegetables over and over for many years. I am often asked if a gardener can reuse potting soil. In this video I will show you the easiest way to reuse your potting soil year after year after year. I'm going to plant some lettuce and herbs and talk about the simplest secret to reusing potting soil almost indefinitely.

Scott, it's people like you that make it possible for a gardener to get through the cold, gray winter months before we get that spring fever that motivates us to get back out into the garden for another season. Something positive about social media.

Yeah buddy! 6-8 weeks before last frost isn't too far away for me. I got a little excited to be honest, even though my peppers only died off a week ago.

Yes I agree Robert 👍 💯
Absolutely! It will be biologically active and ready for action. Only concern is it maybe semi acidic so lime may help a bit.

I love the smell of fertilizer in the morning. Smells like...... victory garden. 😎🕊️🙏💖
I'm not throwing my old soil out anymore. Using it for something. Thank you for this video.
Thanks for the tip! I save my pots every year.
Cutest little scene-stealer ever :)
My corgis love stinky stuff too. Their favorite is goose poop. Their motto seems to be eat what you can, and roll in the rest.

Years don't matter. For forty years we have tilled three acres and never fertilized but every lear we rotated the lines. God always blessed us. Great video. Blessings
This is why Phoebe loves gardening too. She is a little stinker stealing all the attention! Thanks for sharing.
Potting soil is a pretty big expense since I have a couple dozen pots filled with annual flowers and veggies during any given summer, so no way am I throwing it out. I just dump everything from the pots on a tarp the following spring and mix in my own compost and leaf mold, maybe 50/50 old to new, and it's ready to go. This year I will probably add a couple bags of pearlite. If I don't feel like dealing with pots that are really root bound, that soil goes into the compost bins. I've learned over the years (thanks to youtube videos like this) that nothing in the garden should go to waste 😊
Good to see you gain, Brother. Ha been thinking and praying for you and your family. May you always be blessed and strengthened in the Love of God. Always grateful for your videos.
My best performing containers are the older soils .side by side comparison it's clear fungal activity in used potting soil definitely makes added nutrients/fertility better available.
Great video! Used to think I had to use new soil, now I know, what a money saver!
Beautiful color on your muscadine leaves as they're closing up shop.

Yes indeed, lovely fall gold.
I use a flame thrower to sterilize my weedy potted soil by putting it in a metal wheelbarrow and flaming it. It kills all the weed seeds, turns the old roots to carbon, and kills any mold or whatever. You are going to need to fertilize it to use it anyway so why not. Been doing it for years works great saves money.
this was a really nice video for you to share i like your method.
I reuse my soil as well, but sometimes I just toss it in my compost bins.
This will save some money! Thank you for sharing!
Hi Scott. Thanks for all the great information you give to make growing more understanding.
Phoebe will love the blood meal! That that and bone meal is what is attracting her to the potting mix.
You planted that lettuce and I thought “that I is ready for the salad bowl” 😂🤣
Awesome.. I'm going to re use my 3 Year old potting soil after watching this video thanks very much for the information
Hey, it's ALL dinosaur dirt. All any of it needs is a little TLC by way of amendments to turn it into "soil". Add a composter and a cement mixer to mix it around and you're golden.
I do exactly that. At the end of every season I empty all my pots and put the soil in my raised beds. I'm in N.Y so I use alot of mulched leaves on the bottom of my pots before I put my soil in to save on soil.
About a month ago, I got a bunch of HEB cabbage and broccoli when they went on sale for 99 cents each. They were pretty dry and looked a bit sad, but now they're doing great. I love rescuing plants from the sale racks. I've got pots like yours that have over 5 year old potting mix, and I do the same as you. Bust it up and supplement with a good organic fert, and we're off and running. It never gets thrown away. If I decide to start fresh, the old stuff goes into garden beds or in the compost. Thanks for the lead on seeds!
Phoebe wants to roll in it! 😆
I like your videos , Very calming if you have a lot stress. Thank you!🥰😍😘😊
Good video for beginners Scott. I would swiftly go broke if I had to discard all my used potting mix each year with my very large container garden. I amend it each year. Next summer will mark the 5th season growing in the oldest soil. It will also be my first year that I will not have to buy compost. You video's put me on the path to not buying it. I built two super large leaf mold bins last fall and filled them. After turning it into an empty compost stall I refilled them for the following year. Last falls should be done in early spring. I also add pelletized chicken manure, garden lime, and some peat to replenish any thats broken down. Gardening doesnt have to be expensive.
Good stuff, I think I like mixing soil, composting, and making beds more then actually getting stuff to grow hahah I only grow stuff to use up the soil!
I enjoy getting more information about making good potting soil and refreshing it. I set up more planting containers made from 18 gallon and 30 gallon plastic storage totes before the brassica planting season and made my own soil from peat moss, top soil, cheap cow manure bagged compost, and perlite. I buried kitchen scraps and shredded paper, (mixed the paper with soil and sprinkled 10-10-10 with minors) in there twice while it was still hot and humid and mixed it up after it broke down. I have wood mulch on the bottom of the tote. The problem with leaves is that I don't know if the neighborhood cats have done their business in them. I mixed in Plant-tone fertilizer before I planted. I continually compost in buckets or S1 pitchers in the planting containers. I added bone meal and epsom salt to the carrots' soil. Everything growing in them now is doing great.
I pull the mulch back off my container blueberries and add compost and fertilizers annually. They are two years old and it seems to be working so far!
I viewed your old soil amendment video and it is the 1 I follow to amend my soil. I don’t put as much slow release fertilizer as you do but I found the old video much better than this new video. As I recall I liked the analysis of the soil, though not comprehensive is something I could watch out for. I don’t really need the digging part of the video, which is why I liked the old video more. The old video just packs in more information.
I don't grow much in pots because if the heat in central Florida. I do use for flowers and plants on my porch. I throw used soil in compost and it seems to speed up the process.
"Breaking stuff already..." hahahaha we are too much alike. Love your videos. It's been a little cold in Dallas and my carrots are going slow so I'm just babying my jalapeño til the last peppers are ripe and trying to not overprune my herbs out of boredom lol
Catching up on some of your recent vids. Looking forward to seeing the garden this year! Always fun when my garden is under snow!
Great video again!
Thanks for the information. Good to know!
Always reuse my potting soil and amend also. Thanks for the video
Thank you for tips from the Philippines 💙 God Bless
Love phoebe!!
After seeing your last video I now reuse potting soil. Or put it on top of garden beds too.
Thank you
Thank you very much you have save me a lots of money
Good to know. I have blood meal. I want to grow greens in some recycled compost blue bins. There's already soil and a few plants left in there. You've given me my first step for the spring👍
Sometimes we need a wetting agent due to the soil going hydrophobic.
In the spring, one of my Potted plants outside started growing these weird little tendrils. After some research, I found that it was attacked by a parasitic plant, called dodder, if I remember correctly. That's the only time I ever disposed of Potting soil
@juneramirez8580

Wow I heard about that problem before. Good idea to dispose of the contaminated potting mix. I wonder if that is the problem I'm having with one small potted succulent. It's growing what seems to be dry roots around the joints in the stems. I took it to a plant store and they had no idea what was going on. Think I'm going to at least move it away from my other potted plants. And maybe force myself to just throw out the plant. Thank you for your comment it was helpful.

I just solarize my soil when it get anything bad like that. You basically use the sun to bake the life out of the soil. Let it rest a season then see.
Feeble is your star. Just letting you know. Love your video
thx!
Hi Scott, here in the UK we traditionally use fish, blood and bone as a dressing and to mix into soil before planting, it's an all round fertiliser that gives plants everything they need for leaves, roots and flowers=crops. I have a big tub of it ready for next year. But like you, I will not be purchasing new compost, I will amend the soil I have and perhaps, if my compost bin has performed, add a little of that too. I think the only new compost I buy may be for seedlings.
I am so glad to hear that I can re-use potting soil as it has really increased in price. This sure helps when on a fixed budget! One thing, you talked about mulch and while I did some research, it is confusing as some say Such-and-Such is good and others say Such-and-Such is bad. I have both raised beds and now about 40 potential pots to grow in for this season so would I use the same for both or would each do better with a particular mulch and if so, what would be the best. We have no trees but get a LOT of leaves from the neighbors overhanging branches that can be scooped. Am looking forward to getting the Mountain Magic manure suggested by you in another video well as a lot of Dr. Earth.
You can grow anything in sand if you want. If your willing to feed it and water it consistently.........
She thinks its a bag of dog food. LOL
I grow plants in 250 million year old soil. I'd say 5 years is fine.

Thanks so much for what you do. I’m a neighbor on the Texas coast and I get my rice hulls for free locally. Should I worry about pesticides on them?
STENCH CONNISEUR! Ahaha, I have to so careful with fish emulsion. "This is plant food not dog food!"
there arent enough phoebe comments ! i love corgis, shes nice and plump too 😂
Hi Scott, here’s a crazy idea: The native soil out out here, Houston Black Clay, aka. Black Gumbo, is very rich in minerals but low in organic matter and nitrogen. Couldn’t you just take a few scoops of native soil and mix it in to revitalize your potting soil?
@ScottHead
Жыл бұрын
It is very dense and gummy so I prefer to add it to my compost where over time it breaks down.
Scott I grow in bags have all my cabbage etc. now, once I harvest I dump bags all together and add 7-7-7 & dolemite(lime) with “Black Cow” compost if needed and refill then replant each season. Add organic fertilizer intermittently during growing. In same zone so. La. coast as you. What your thoughts too much, not enough??Also do same with raised beds

Sounds like a good method and if it works, its right.
The dog likes the smell because there are animal products in the bag such as bone meal and blood meal.
I plan to reuse my potting soil but I’m concerned because our water is quite alkaline. Will the salts in my water build up in the soil after a while? How would I know? If so would I use an acidic amendment of some sort? Also, I have dumped all my potting soil in 32 gallon containers for winter storage. In the spring I plan to amend as you mentioned as I am filling the containers to plant. I also thought this would fluff up the soil in the whole pot rather than the top few inches. This next year will be my third year to garden so I experiment a lot. Thanks for your videos.
@ScottHead

If you are concerned get a pH test kit and check on the soil. They are cheap on Amazon. If you find alkaline build up over time then yes, an easy correction with a little acidic amendment of your choice.
Have you added rice hulls over the years or is that all four years old?

Where do I get rice hulls? Are they reasonably priced?
@ellbow7287
Жыл бұрын
@@sonnyamoran7383 You can mulch with leaves, straw, hay, pea straw, sugar cane mulch , sawdust, coffee grinds even large flattish stones. They all helps to keep the moisture in the soil for the plants and stop the soil baking hard dry, and stop weeds popping up. Try several and see what suits you best.
I just compost it...
What kind of baged compost do you like. I use some from Lowes. But it looks like mulcb. Im a littl afraid of.
@ScottHead
Жыл бұрын
I usually use my own so I don't have a favorite. If I buy bags, I will need to look at the stuff inside before buying. Then I'd do a bioassay to make sure its not contaminated with aminopyralid herbicide. (grow a few bean seedlings in it first, if they are deformed, don't use the compost)
I am catching up on your videos that I missed and it seems Phoebe has put on a lot of weight. It is bad for her joints. I know as a pet owner sometimes these things slip us. I have missed seeing her.
Yeah there's no doubt that you can't grow in Old potting soil like that I do it all the time

WOW GLAD I FOUND YOU !!!! WOULD YOU TELL ME WHY MY TOMATOES DO NOT DO GOOD IN POTS JUST LIKE YOU HAVE... THEY WILL NOT GROW BIG. AND I USE THE VERY SAME BLUE POTS YOU HAVE... I DO NOT GET IT. I AM THINKING THE POTS ARE TO SMALL ........... EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE BIG..

Multiple choice answer: 1. not enough sun, 2. too much or little fertilizer, 3. Flea beetles and spider mites, 4. too much or little water, 5. Wrong tomato variety, 6. Planting too late in season.
