Can I Gheenoe The Entire St Johns?

I wanted to take a few days and run my old Gheenoe up the St Johns River. A few friends were curious to see the trip. I took a couple cameras with me but I'm no Doug Bell by any means. I was supposed to start in Felsmere, and after a failed attempt due to a tropical storm, I had to launch a little further north. I put in at high way 520. I spent some days out in my natural habitat. Along the way I met a lot of nice swamp people. Once I got out of the swamps and into the larger lakes I met a lot of friendly lake people whom tried to feed me.
My boat is a 1970 15' 4'' Gheenoe. On this trip I ran a slow but trustworthy 2001 5hp Johnson. I got to enjoy one spring and caught 0 fish the entire time. It was a great trip and will probably do this again. Maybe even document it better.

@@JohnMallory yeah it seems like a nice place to fish/hunt. Never been before as I’m from south fl, took a trip up to jacksonville recently but only fished the intercostal. Hoping to try it out next time.

If you are planning to trek all the way to the mouth at Mayport it can get pretty rough. I have a 15.6 Classic, and I put in at the Oak Harbor boat ramp seeing how far I could get towards Mayport. As soon as I got out into the main channel, I got tossed around pretty good, maybe 3 foot waves. I wasn't very windy or anything. I got a little spooked about taking a big one over the side and plus I was riding solo. I got my butt back to safer waters. I think, that you could only get through there under perfect conditions.

I ran a 5hp on the trip but also run other sizes up to 15 on that boat. I currently run that 5hp on a aluminum boat I have and I’m working on a 13ft gheenoe which I plan to run a 8-15hp on.

How did you navigate? Did you have a map or chart that kept you on the right track? and how did you know where the shelters were at? I will be duplicating your trek in the future, so I am paying close attention.

Shelters are hit or miss, some I have memorized. Maps show some, but there are others not even on the maps. I have found some on maps that are no longer there. As far as navigating I have most of the river memorized. Harder parts were the river seems to go everywhere I check my phone from time to time. Looking at satellite images I can figure it out. You have to keep in mind that water level drastically effects satellite and maps. This trip it was high, next trip if it is low there can be more dead ends.

No, I’ve considered trying it out but never have. Went out with the family on a airboat yesterday towards Helen blaze, saw about 50.
