Can I Drive My C63 From London To Edinburgh On One Tank Of Fuel? (400 Miles in a 6.2 V8)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Hello everyone and welcome back! Today I want to debunk the myth of the W204 C63 AMG’s fuel economy. It’s a general consensus that it gets a bad name for fuel economy, due to its rather large displacement of it being a naturally aspirated 6.2 V8, courtesy of the M156. However, that doesn’t seem to be the case in my ownership at least, it’s been fairly frugal at times. But how frugal can a W204 2012 Mercedes C63 AMG be? Well to find out, I am going to give it the biggest challenge yet, a fuel economy challenge. The challenge in question will undertake the Mercedes from London to Edinburgh, on one tank of fuel… which is a distance of just shy of 400 miles. A tall order for a car which loves to boast single digits/low teens for MPG.

    Thank you so much Gary! I’m glad you too did the same in a car which didn’t warrant a fuel economy run. I’ve heard they’re super thirsty those 2.5’s, so that’s extremely impressive to get 30mpg! They’re extremely versatile and easy to live with the C63’s. If you drive them normally then you wouldn’t find it much different from a regular C class! The estates aren’t too great in numbers, but a quick scour on autotrader is worth a look. If you have Facebook, then I’d highly recommend the C63 AMG UK group, it’s very friendly and there’s a sub group for cars for sale, and there’s often quite a few for sale for good prices. Speaking of good prices, the C63’s are quite low at the moment too! I can’t praise them highly enough, I hope your wife is sold by the idea!!😁

Depending how heavy both luggage is, you could inflate tyres to compensate for 3 people? Then maybe 1,000 miles into your journey, you can stop off at a petrol station and make sure the tyre pressure are still adequate :)

    @@NathanMannin it is a rare model. The 2009-2016 W212 E class had A207/C207 as coupe and cabrio. Originally developed to take the 3rd gen CLK badge, but they then put an E badge on it. That generation of E started with M113 derived V8s. Come 2012 and mid cycle facelift, they started dropping the newer biturbos in: the 5.5 M157 that replaced M156, and it's little brother, the M278. So yes, E63 with the 5.5TTV8 is next up. But I don't want to pay the "AMG tax" to enjoy a V8; all that's needed is a bit of exhaust fettling. As a petrolhead, they are something you should experience, even if it’s short term because of the high running costs, it’s worth it. I mean, I didn’t anticipate owning my C63 long term, but 4 years later it’s still my ownership! I honestly do not think there’s anything which can induce the feelings what a C63 can, as well as how versatile it is too, especially at it’s price point.

    Wow just wow. Of course, no one drives like this every day with such engine power at their disposal, but in fact it is as Clarkson said when racing the Prius with the M3, which was only supposed to stick to the rear of the Prius. You don't have to give up your car to drive economically, you just need to change your driving style. Recently I tested my Focus ST MK3 2.0 EB estate. Distance 260 kilometers. One way, economical without sudden overtaking or driving above 70 mph. It came out to 6.7L/100 kilometers which equates to 42 mpg on average. However, in the other direction, I drove as if I had stolen it... and the result was 18.6L/100 kilometers, (15 mpg.). Fortunately, speed cameras are rare on our motorways. Greetings from Poland.

On daily basis I drive my car "dynamicly" but still reasonably. But main purpose of my test was to check what I can achieve when I`m steady on the throtle and what if I will push it really hard. And conclusion is that car with some amount of power, bigger than average, consumes fuel depending of driving style. And that is absolutely true. You can if you want to, but same time you don`t have to. And in ordinary car maybe you would like to, but you can`t. And that is the difference, and reason to not give up nice cars. When I first got mine i got 29mpg on a 160 mile motorway journey. By the time I hit the roundabout on the slip road it was down to 26. Life’s too short not to enjoy these cars, have fun and a smile and get 13mpg or drive miss daisy and get 20. There’s no point, better to buy another cheap runabout.

    I have no need to buy a cheap runaround when this car perfectly fits the bill as it is. I regularly drive it spirited so I get more than my fair share of fun out of it. This was just an experiment I’ve always wanted to do, and to prove these cars can be way more frugal than they’re thought to be.

    I could do that journey and half way back in my 2010 BMW 330D on 1 tank, easy peasy. And I consider that car to be somewhat thirsty. On public roads, the BMW diesel is already stupidly pointlessly fast. BTW cruise set on the car speedo as 65 is probably an actual 62 or 61. I set my cruise speeds according to my Tomtom satnav.

    Diesels are superb, it makes me sad how they’re being fazed out, the range and performance they give in their 6 cylinder guise is phenomenal. I had a go in a 2104 330d Touring and I remember that being silly quick, but also just a perfect all rounder. I have noticed my Waze maps says I’m doing more like 62/63, when I’m on cruise control at 65mph.

    Consumption is better expressed as litres per 100 kilometres (litres/100 km) as that's what you purchase fuel in at the pumps, litres.

  • @NathanMannin

    @NathanMannin

    Ahhh, apologies! I’ve never used that conversion before as we don’t use km in the UK. I’ll try and include that conversion next time.

  • @TRPGpilot

    @TRPGpilot

    @@NathanManninI started using L/100km in the UK after I started monitoring my fuel usage. The pumps dispense litres so all I did was changed my odometer to display kilomotres. (MOT test odemeter record also record km if that's wahts displayed). The advantage is no conversion needed and also its a direct display of consumption e.g. 6 lites of fuel is consumed for every 100 kilometres travelled. Also more importantly its a linear scale i.e 12 litres/100km is directly twice as much cunsumption as 6 litres/100 km. MPG is NOT linear e.g. a car getting 50mpg is NOT using half the fuel as one getting 25 mpg.

    It is a little on the small side for how thirsty these cars can be, but with the C63 which is based on a C class, it’s already quite heavy at around 1750KG, so I guess 66 litres is better for weight saving.
