If you soak Purple Heart for a couple of weeks in a bucket until it sinks, it becomes softer and easier to carve. Tip you you try to do this add soap to the water, otherwise it will smell pretty bad

Just a tip for purpleheart, if you really want to bring out the color, stick it in the oven at low temperatures for a few mins. Notice at the beginning how the color popped when you did the rough sanding? That's what heated purple heart looks like! Awesome video, purple heart is a PITA to work with.

You can also take a heat gun or a torch(light swipes across) and the grain will raise and the color will be the amazing purple color. Never tried putting it in the oven, does it raise the grain and help with getting it super smooth after sanding?

As a carver this is pretty interesting to me. Metal workers coming to carving tools for the first time often make the mistake of thinking the tool will work the same regardless of direction of attack. Wood and its tools don't work like that. You need to cut in the direction that pushes the fibers together, not apart. This is why you are getting chip out and a rough surface. when carving curved lines the direction can change several times in a single line. You have to sense it and reverse direction with your cutting edge. This is the central problem of carving and why those funny bent gouges and chisels exist. In the roughing out phase it isn't so important, but still, you stand a higher chance of chipping out parts of the wood you wanted to keep by working against the grain. Next, initial choice of the orientation of the block to the design is important. You chose to put the end grain right at the top of your design. This left you fighting end grain constantly and it is hard to get cuts across the endgrain to be smooth and clean. Your tool needs to be at maximum sharpness and you need to take many light cuts to avoid chipping out the wood in a way that leads to lots of tiny deep pits that will be hard to remove. Essentially leaving you where you started; with a layer of wood that has to go. In full relief carving such as this you can't avoid working in the end grain, but orienting it the right way at the beginning helps to 'minimize' that problem. I air quote 'minimize' because it really can't be avoided, half instead of three quarters so to speak. Working back and forth from abrasives to cutting tools is another no no. The abrasive will leave residue in the wood which will dull your tools. Do it, but understand you will need to remove the affected wood and then re-sharpen, or wait for sanding until you are done with the gouges. Finally, I want to tell you that a sharp cutting edge will give you the most beautiful and clean surface possible that will not need sanding. This point is pretty advanced and it is joined at the hip to another design principle; design for the tools you have. If you look at old master carving you will see that the shapes come directly from the shape of the cutting edge. I love you, man. You are one of my favorite youtubers and I offer this too-long paragraph of advice in good faith and without rancor. I hope it comes across like that.

I like the tool from Shawn Sipa. 50/50 90% rubbing alcohol and water in a spray bottle, or just soak the block. Some color may leach off but it is great for softening wood to work end grain, or very hard woods like walnut, oak, mahogany. I even use it with basswood to add more fine details.

Ridiculously sharp gouges make any carving job easier, especially with a good variety of edge geometry. I've been taught to generally avoid straight chisels, because of the tear-out problem. Basic problem of softwood is that it pretty much always gets shaped, even by dull tools, but not always in the way you want. A good start tho.

I think a clear laquer finish would've worked better since purpleheart is already so dense, and maybe the petals could've been shaped to come up and out, then fall at the edges. Cool process though, I think I might try for myself! (You'd totally be able to make a great pinecone if you used some walnut btw 👌)

I literally learned how to carve roses stems flowers and leaves into these huge white oak beams in the cieling of our house cuse we knocked out two weight barring walls and used huge giant pieces of white oak beams hollowed out to support the roof. And it looks amazing I carved it all in the air after the fact took me a good month of weekends but it's beautiful like what green and green did in their houses. Like the Procter and gamble house inspirede to make all the wood work in my remodeling to look like decor but it also serves a purpose structure wise as well all the wood work I did in our remodel look up green and green arcatexture and green and green houses andansions and the Procter and gble house scarf joints and all looks beautiful so I did that along with a modern style as well in our house. I'm 29 and just learned or started learning how to do wood working and carpentry about three months ago and here I am carving beautiful flowers and stuff into beams in our house and scarf joints and cabinets with drawers that has no hardware for the sliders it's all grooves and joints to make the drawers slide out and in solid and smooth

@@RealRuler2112 Purpleheart is distantly related to the rosewoods, though they share similar health effects. Purpleheart/amaranth is a part of the subfamily Detarioideae, while the rosewoods make up the genus Dalbergia which includes cocobolo, African blackwood, and many other economically important species. Amaranth is a sensitizer, which means that each time you're exposed to it the greater the chance of developing an allergy to it.
