Thank you! Great interview. It seems that the problem of liberalism is that it is not working as Mr. Fukuyama envisions. In other words, intrinsically, we need to apply some authoritarian methods to force making liberalism work. Per Mr. Fukuyama, liberalism works only when it is restricted to what we've put into place. Wouldn't that sound like authoritarianism?

@@EurojuegosBsAs that's true in a way but they are always defeating themselves, too because their own logic collides with how this world actually works on a logical basis. Nature is organized in a very democratic way and you can’t simply act in a parternalistic way that completely goes against natural logic without it hitting back at you some day and that will always result in the destruction of the autocrat. That does of course not mean we should not do anything about autocrats, on the contrary we should either prevent them to be in power or if this can’t be prevented, we should help them to destroy themselves because that's what their business is all about anyway and if we help them in this it can be seen as a win-win situation although they cannot see that themselves.

So logically, if global liberalism can co-exist with other political systems then that’s not called “global”. Liberalism and authoritarian, for example, are two parallel political systems. If this is true, then there should be many systems between these two to naturally exist. End of global liberalism.

That outro was deafeningly loud compared to the volume of the interview itself.

Fukuyama keeps fukuyaming around and sticks to his mantra that the liberal society is good and illiberal societies are backward. 30 years ago his fuckuayming about looked so attractive that many of us in Russia are still under the charm of this perspective, including people from Putin's inner circle, who are now fighting the nation that was carried away by this enthusiam. Such an ironic turn and twist

Wow, I'm gonna read his books. That's a huge change coming from a Chomsky fan like me. I wonder I'm nearing the truth or drifting from it.

The truth is generally somewhere down the center with leaning a little left and a little right. Capitalism is the greatest ism but we need to stop the benefits the government has given the wealthy but you can’t go so far as some want which would be high taxes.

@@michaelbrickley2443 For tax years 1944 through 1951, the highest marginal tax rate for individuals was 91%, increasing to 92% for 1952 and 1953, and reverting to 91% 1954 through 1963. For the 1964 tax year, the top marginal tax rate for individuals was lowered to 77%, and then to 70% for tax years 1965 through 1981.

Here’s my response to this video. First of all, let me make it clear that I’m a big fan of classical liberalism, the liberalism described by Francis Fukuyama: it’s hands down the best system. And I’m in favor of identity politics that recognizes that people are different, and that we should all be treated equally by society’s institutions. While I think our system is the best, I also think it’s a big mistake to force other countries to adopt our values, or demonize them for not doing so; and I don’t see them as a threat. I know that historically communism has been viewed with great mistrust and fear, and has justified some very illiberal actions like McCarthyism in the US, or the internment of Japanese American during WWII. This fear corrodes liberalism from the inside and leads to the very authoritarianism that it’s designed to avoid. So getting to the present situation, it’s ironic that populist leaders like Trump, Orban, Salvini, and Marine LePen (French elections tomorrow) are the only ones standing up to the reckless escalation of the Ukrainian war, and the extreme sanctions and boycotts on Russia. Putin was wrong to invade, but the absolute vilification of Russia could lead to a world war and a nuclear confrontation. Just to be clear, I’m all for liberalism, but the way it’s been working, neoliberalism combined with a messianic desire to convert the whole planet to our system, is crazy. I just don’t think it’s possible for the US Empire to run the whole world under the guise of liberalism, because, in the end, it’s not liberalism that we impose on them, but often a pro-American dictator, like we did in Chile in 1973 with Pinochet. Francis Fukuyama has good ideas but is clearly biased: he makes no mention of the NATO provocation of Russia. He fails to understand, and take into account, that Russia views being surrounded by NATO bases as an existential threat. This oversimplification turns the world into a black-and-white good-guy-vs-bad-guy affair. He basically says it would be a wonderful thing if Russia suffers a humiliating defeat, but if they really get cornered, they may justifiably feel their very existence is threatened and lash out with nukes. Our leaders seem blind to this, or are happy to risk our lives. Fukuyama also fails to see that, while here in the West we’re living the good life, this often comes at the price of poor people in the third world working in sweat shops for peanuts, so we can buy cheap at Walmart or Amazon. Our liberalism is for the few, definitely not for the Black slaves in the early US, or plantation workers in Guatemala. He says Russia doesn’t have free and fair elections, and thus implies that we do, but here candidates are basically preselected by our oligarchs, or are one themselves. Our vaunted liberalism is clearly flawed and in decline: I truly hope we don’t lose it, but we’re not going about it the right way.

6:00 Fukuyama is propagandising about Martin Luther King Jr and drawing a division between him and modern anti-racists which doesn't exist. For example, King supported affirmative action (look up Operation Breadbasket)

Next time try and make sure that we can see the interviewer's face. The camera was placed in such a way that the mic. almost totally obscured his face -- all we could see was the man's eyes and forehead! A little less than professional.

If i may leave an opinion to help improve your work. Remove the microphone from the level and direction of your mouth/face so we can see you speecking. It is very important to keep the viwer focused. Best regards.

An idealist, a Neocon, a liberal political economist... with his eyes firmly closed, he can live in his own, beautiful endless dream.

The problem with liberalism is the word. It should be Democratic liberal socialism, needs to be a combo. However over here in Australia the liberals are known as the liberal party and they are leaning further and further right all the time and already locking up people reporting on goverblnment corruption with anti terrorist units. People don't think of the political definitions of the word, they just vote for the party they think is right. However Putin and Trump know, if you control the media you can control what people think is right. Ruport Murdoch and media corruption and lack of diversity and over sight are the problems plaguing every nation in threat of falling to authoritarianism. Sure democracies could use a tweak, liberal or social, they're mostly the very similar blends even though culturally the words have different significance. However it's the failure of the media that has corrupted the message and many democracies particularly the ones failing fast like Hungary and the USA have little protections in place to avoid propaganda in the media. Stop the propaganda and instantly save democracies, also realise the propaganda threat started from outside before it ate away from within.

People loose trust in the system, because they have less ande less Economical freedom. Liberal Democratic government is one thing. It might be ideal. Human freedom would be preferred. But what is missing here? Human dignity, economical freedom. Food on the table, freedom in the workplace and I guess many more.

This guy thought we reached the end of history 30 years ago proclaiming Democratic liberalism was the model in which the rest of the world ought to imitate. Francis Fujiyama doesn't understand God is not dead, He is risen. In secular terms, Fukujama doesn't seem to understand that the fourth political theory is upon us.

The Bible has lost much of it's prestige.Nevertheless, the dream of Nebchafnetzar is very insightful. The feet of the idol which is the last stage of history is a compound of iron and clay,of strong and weak nation's which fail to form a unity. This fault is clearly seen in the Urkraine war.The problem is that due to the climate crisis and the threat of nuclear war it is imperative for someone somewhere to put together a new world order. And that is where we are!

i would argue how you believe he got it wrong then? much of his theories are probably spot on although i would go further much of the left ideologies becoming over saturated and polluted with post modernism and the very philosophers that contribute to it that are eroding what it even means to be a liberal. Most of the crazy stuff we are seeing right now are tied into the post modern philosophies that has evolved over time to create critical theory and critical race theory both of which are absolutely intolerant of liberalism in favor of an illiberal democracy. The problem with such a system is anything not liberal typically will devolve into an authoritarian regime. But since you think he got it wrong give some points or better yet some better intellectuals who you THINK got it right?
