    Hi Jason: I’m from Butte, Montana. I’ve seen no significant difference in testing a split piece of firewood verses the end grain. The key is, it must be cut or split and then tested shortly thereafter. I buy firewood logs and as soon as I cut the log down into processor length, I check the moisture content. If it’s over 20% the log gets put aside. We have a lot of beetle killed trees that have been standing dead for many years and these typically have a moisture content of 11% to 16%.

  • @OakMountainAcotts

    @OakMountainAcotts

    7 ай бұрын

    Thanks Richard, excellent information. The moisture meter is good but once we get a system going (and if the wood source is consistent), we do not routinely check the wood. The checking on the ends and the sound when we load and dump the wood is all the feedback that is needed!

    Burning wet wood leads to extra condensation in the chimney as well as using up potential energy for heat to the home! Not sure it leads to creosote buildup, but I bet it does. I always have my wood supply a year ahead. Very dry wood should be the best given the fact that there is less moisture to have to vaporize. It burns faster but gives up more heat in that time. Here in New Hampshire it would be hard to get air dried wood less than 10%. Looks like a nice moisture meter.

  • @OakMountainAcotts

    @OakMountainAcotts

    7 ай бұрын

    Thanks George. We agree with you. I think wet wood contributes to creosote build up. It takes some of the energy to boil the moisture out of the wood and I think that lowers the flue gas temperature overall... lower temperatures in the fire box likely also contribute to more inefficient (and incomplete) burning of the impurities in the wood?

    Here's my assessment and it is open for debate. When wood is dry, it will take on the ambient moisture level of its' surroundings. I think really dry wood burns faster which means a few more trips to reload but it should provide great heating value... I think the issue is if the wood gets too old and starts to decay... then you lose some of the stored energy that was originally in the wood. Thanks for watching!

    Hi Jason. Here in Lake Utopia Nb, I usually watch for cracking at the end of my sticks. Also, I watch the color of the wood. Sometimes, too, if you bang two pieces together, you can tell if it's dry. Yeah, I'd say a moisture meter would be easier and more accurate lol
