Can Eurovision claim to be apolitical after banning Russia? | LBC debate
Ali Miraj wonders if Eurovision can claim to be apolitical after banning Russia following its invasion of Ukraine.
Israel's Eurovision singer Eden Golan was ordered to stay in her hotel room by her country's national security agency yesterday as thousands protested her entry into the competition.
Protesters lined the streets in Malmo to demand that Ms Golan be removed from the renowned song competition, including climate activist Greta Thunberg.

@@susanwestern6434 The song drew heavy scrutiny for its original title "October Rain", which along with the lyrics was viewed as a political message alluding to the Israel-Hamas war in support of Israel and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). As a result, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), the organization that manages the Eurovision Song Contest, requested a rewrite of the song in late February 2024. After multiple submissions and rewrites, a final revised version, titled "Hurricane", was approved by the EBU on 7 March.
I believe Israel will win because of minority support thoughout Europe focussed on a single entrant. This will be seen in Israel as as support for Israel's war in Gazza. This is why Israel should not be competing. Eurovision has always been political - when countries are competing it cannot be anything but political.
People are defending Israel's inclusion in the contest on the basis that the contest is 'not political'. Fair enough, but, firstly, the song was a veiled reference to 7 October (so, the song was political), and, secondly, many people have said they voted for Israel multiple times in order to demonstrate they were 'against Hamas'. You CAN'T have it both ways. Either Israel's inclusion and song isn't political, or it is.

The Ukrainian broadcaster in the EBU (UA:PBC) filed an appeal in 2022 to ban Russian broadcasters due to them functioning as propaganda mouthpieces for Russia (and receiving state funding) since the start of the invasion in 2014. This wasn't enough to have them banned, it was only after Denmark, Sweden, Iceland, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland and Norway joined them and Estonia and Finland said they would not take part if Russia were allowed to that a ban was put in place.
The argument of a palastine state not being able to take part due to consistency has absolutely 0 value when they are NOT. A recognised state and therefore CANNOT take part any way

It's an idiotic premise to keep politics out of it. You can't keep politics out of anything that involves people.

It was easy to ban Russia since almost every EBU member state had cut diplomatic ties and issued sanction on it. I`d rather ask why no one is sactioning Israel at the moment. I kind of agree with the woman who called, she's not the one who's bombing Gaza and but in the same time, READ THE ROOM DEAR + she's contributing to Israel's propaganda (because of course her song is about October 7th!). Overall I'm a little conflicted about this one. Maybe we can hate her, but with moderation?

I don't hate the singer. I actually felt a little sorry for her. She is no more to blame for Israel's actions than the US and Russian athletes for their own nations deciding to boycott the 1980 and 1984 Olympics respectively. That said, you're right that the song is a veiled reference to 7 October, and, thus, de facto Israeli propaganda. Thus, the song contest is being intrinsically political by allowing this artist to perform and without a counterpoint being provided by, say, a Palestinian performer.
To Ali everything is always ""interesting"" The man talks like he's constantly suffering from constipation

Please, please bring back Sangita, this man is awful!

This Ali guy is ridiculous. Creating silly hypothetical arguments just so he doesn't have to criticise israel 🤡
Next year we should have a Palestinian representative...Mr Ali take south Africa out of your mouth especially since isreal backed the then governments apartied system
@GregOrCreg
23 күн бұрын
Precisely to the first point. I don't have a problem with an Israeli representative in the competition, just as long as there is a Palestinian one to even-up the balance, otherwise it's just propaganda (and bear in mind that the Israeli song, as heartfelt as it was, was a veiled reference to 7 October, and thus arguably a piece of artistic propaganda).
When was Israel moved into Europe? If they can play, what about Syria, or Lebanon? Or, shock horror, Palestinians? Of course it's political. Always has been.
