Donal, Rory’s brother, said that Rory had a rare blood type that had a high acidic level. His sweat as a result was more acidic than normal and the end result was the finish on his strat that we all love. Look back at the very early pictures and you will see that the process was well and truly underway. I think it’s bang out of order to suggest that his drinking was so heavy, even back then that it did that amount of damage to his guitar. It was only later in life that his drinking became a problem and a contributing factor to his early death. And by the way, the g is silent in Gallagher. I had a chat with Dave about that and like the true fan that he is, he took it on board. Good man Dave, legend. Great channel, great content, keep it coming.

I think this happens when you learn a lot from an artist. I think you have to learn 20+ songs to really have a chance at emulating/improvising in the style of someone. I've been doing this with a bunch of people, I havn't reached 20 yet, but the more songs I learn the more convincing it gets.

Agree except with Lee dialing in sounds, Lee dials in almost exclusively bad sounds. Dave is a master at dialing in sounds, he should be doing it all, that is the real downside of these videos. Firstly, Lee, you need to listen to lots of Rory Gallagher. I can't believe you haven't already. Try Irish Tour '74, and Tattoo. Listen to Million Miles Away live from Irish Tour. Secondly, you nailed the Rory tone with the very first treble boost, the Ibenez one, and after that it drifted away from any Rory sound I have in my record collection, in my opinion. Vox & Ibenez Booster, and that was it. I love the idea that Rory's corrosive sweat was due to the alcohol content. Made me laugh. God bless him. God bless Dave too - one of my favourite people on the planet.

Man, that made me emotional. I was asking for a video like that for years, since the sound like series was happening (which was so flippin cool vids, i wish they could bring this format an vibe back). Rory was my first guitar hero, he was a beast, left it all out there, every time I listen to him playing or singing there is so much emotion transfered to me. Last note, its a common misconception that a boost with a lot of treble is equal to a treble booster. A treble booster is a unique circuit that does it own thing and really shines in front of an overdriven tube amp so I dont think its possible to replicate it with a simple boost
@realdocloco
2 жыл бұрын
That's totally right. A treble booster actually mainly boost mid frequencies, while tightening the bass. It gives a really singing tone (of course, Brian May is often telling how he got his singing tone directly from Rory Gallagher).

Greetings Lee and Dave, firstly you make a great team, good connection. I got myself an old AC30, a Strat and a few different boosters to chase that Taste/ Rory sound. So I was very impressed to see how knowledgeable Dave is on Rory’s approach and sound. Not only that he nails the playing. There are many great players out there but I doubt many of them know so much about the detailed nuances of a wide range of players.

Great demo. I saw Rory a few times in the 70's and the only nit-pick I can make, Dave, is that without all the energy he brought to his performance, you'll not get his attack. Funny how the '61 that Fender thought made them look bad invented the distressed look that's made them so much, subsequently. One thing only Rory did, as far as I'm aware, was pull/rip his d string out over the body a good 2 inches - I tried it but it's bloody difficult and sounded crap, unlike when he does it. For the unique tone of Vox, the clue is in the AC- a sort of folded back return wiring in the pre-amp, while everyone else goes direct as a clean clear signal is paramount.

Im actually surprised the Captain isnt familiar with Rory Gallagher's work, as hes such a big blues and rock fan
Good to see Rory get some love!
YES! YES! YES! YES!!! At last a Rory did with Dave, heaven. Out of 7 to 8 years of watching Anderton's vids this is hands down my favourite. But Lee! WHAT!? you own a guitar shop, love strats and aren't familiar with Rory??????? Literally gobsmacked and slightly cross 😄😄😄 Thanks Dave, great rendition of Bad Penny. LONG LIVE RORY G!!!

Yeah,it’s one of life’s great mysteries how some prominent guitar dudes hadn’t heard of our Blessed Rory. Check out the Guitar Historian channel. Extremely knowledgeable yet admitted he hadn’t heard (of) Rory Gallagher. His Rory Gallagher episode is priceless. Accidentally hears Rory on AOR car radio. “I died.”
one of the absolute best guitarists by a long stretch

Like Mr Captain, I'm clueless about him. Only know Bad Penny from Dave covering it. Some of the other riffs he was playing in this vid sounded great tho.

I just spat my drink out! Didn’t think you’d actually do Rory, man I’m so happy 🎸🤣
Glad to see Rory Gallagher finally get some love

Yeah my son has a similar affliction, was trying to get him to learn guitar and use my Strat so I could get the unique look 😁
Was lucky to see Rory in the mid 70s ... in Berlin. He played one of these Stramp baby amps ... great show!
Glad to see a Rory Gallagher edition! Thanks!
Great to see, for my English friends you don't pronounce the g in the middle of Gallagher, us Irish say Gal a her.
Love Rory, so this was a great half hour - thank you chaps. Can’t think of many artists whose live albums surpassed their studio ones.
Thanks. Rory was magic. His music never ages. Legendary marathon live shows. (Rory wasn't an alcoholic fyi). Many have tried, but no-one can, replicate Rory's sound. Live, he just blew the roof off. He was unique. Been a Rory follower since 1969, his music is just as relevant today. 👍
Dave is such a humble regular guy while being a total badass on the guitar. Love this run of videos Lee and Dave are doing as they are both interesting and fun to watch.
You really need to give Rory a good listen captain
we need more videos about Rory, Great tribute to a master thanks Dave.😁
More Dave please, and Lee please listen to some Rory ASAP
I just want to take a minute to thank the Anderton's youtube team for the production quality of their videos. The sound and image quality, the over head cameras for the pedals, the editing, etc.. There is just nothing quite like it on youtube for music content. Merci!!!

Thanks Dave and Lee.Rory inspired and still inspires as a guitarist and as a human being.Gone way before his time.Players like Rory and Albert Lee managed to keep their heads out of their arses, despite being guitar Royalty they remained so humble, down to earth and approachable,a quality that Dave possesses also. The Captain made a great move by bringing Dave on board.
Dave's a chameleon for sure..can emulate many styles w both technical styles and capturing tone to match...if course he's got the best in the business at spinning the knobs to find the tones in the Captain! Great work man 😁🎸

There has been at least one video where Dave wanted to change something and Lee put it back, that isn't supposed to be the point of the video.
Roy Buchanan, such a great player and with an amazing tone.
Ah man this took me back to my teenage years. Discovered Rory and basically idolised him through out my teens. Good job lads!
Respect to Dave for pronouncing Rory's last name correctly. GALL-A-HER! ❤️ 'In Your Town' is my favorite and 'Unmilitary Two Step' I adore playing!
I had a non-master volume AC30 Top Boost in 1980. It was the loudest thing I've ever heard in my life. I only turned it up full once and nearly blew the street away. Nuclear deterrent capability.
Dave back! Absolutely lovely work from him
Man, that made me emotional.
@realdocloco
Now the biggy, I was fortunate to see Rory on many occasions in the 70's and early 80's, Dave's understanding of the nuances of Rory's tone is spooky, Lee, may I suggest have a good listen and watch his stuff, a eye opener. I could share a few storys of his licks and tricks he did live. Keep it going you two.
Oooh you guys actually did Rory Gallagher! 🙏🙏🙏😭🥳 too cool, too cool!! Selfishly hoping for a Paul Kossoff one also (I know he didn’t use many pedals but he had a very unique way of using wah in the couple of examples “The Worm” and “I’ll Be Creepin” and his use of leslie speakers is so unique to this day) but this is already like Christmas 🎄
Absolutely superb! Not only is Dave a great player he has a real ear for getting it right . Rory gave everything in his shows , new strings every gig ! Thanks to Andertons for a great video !
Yay! Good one guys. Rory lives on!
Dave pronounced Gallagher correctly 👏👏 quite a rare thing
one thing gave me great relief - Dave pronounced the name "GallaHer" and the Captain "GallaGer" so even English blokes seem to have a different understanding about this....
Dave is incredible the way he covers so many artists so well. I was lucky enough to see Rory live a couple of times and he was truly special and incredible.
Dave's amazing. Always a pleasure to see him
Well done Dave! At times it sounds very close. I've been a Rory fan since I heard Tattoo'd Lady from my dad's Irish Tour '74 vinyl 20 years ago or so.
Dave did a really good job with this, Rory has a hard style to replicate.
yes yes yes yes, waited so long for this, huge Rory fan! Killer playing Dave!
I don't often comment on anything but this was fantastic, I love the content that Andertons produces and the same for Dave Simpson what he gets out of the least amount of gear is truly amazing. My old man talks about Rory Gallagher and I have gone back and listened over the years and he is a real guitar hero who needs more love.
Since these were pre-Pringles days I adjust my comment on the previous Dave vid to “To be fair, Dave could sound like Rory with an old Ford Cortina and one of those tubs of seafood they used to sell from baskets in pubs.” Also, I am so jealous of those who haven’t listened to much Rory… Dudes, you have such a treat ahead! Oooooh yesssss! Irish Tour 74 isn’t a bad place to start. Xxx
What an incredible player Dave is. Great job. On a side note I named my daughter after Rory 😃
Love Rory and was lucky to see him in Brighton way back 🙂. Dave is amazing and so likable.. Andertons and the captain are brilliant (I went there last week and bought the most expensive guitar I ever have 😬😁) thanks to Paul as well..

Ah, Lee. You have a treat in store for you. From what I know of your musical tastes, Rory Gallagher will be right up your alley. I had never heard of him either until a few years ago. His catalog has been one of my great joys ever since.
Dave Simpson is a legend. Love hearing him play and his enthusiasm is infectious
Rory was my main guitar inspiration since a kid.
Great work as always Dave. I would love to see Dave do Billy Gibbons, Paul Kossoff and Gary Moore
I've also seen a picture of Rory using a Gretsch Corvette. Great job Dave
I've wanted to see you guys do Rory for years!!!
One of my favourite You tubers covering my favourite guitarist!! Yaaas.
Excellent well done Dave and finally able to play Rory without getting a copy right strike nice one
Great job from Dave as always. Now could someone get the Captain a copy of Tattoo, Blueprint, Calling Card or Against the Grain? Then throw in Irish Tour ‘74 or Live In Europe?
I don’t have time to watch this right now but cannot wait for later!!
These videos show what we already knew, just how good Dave is at playing guitar but also how knowledgeable he is about other guitarists and how they get their sound
YESSSSS! Always love seeing videos on Rory Gallagher 👌
FINALLY. I've been waiting for a sounds like Rory for years. And Rory Gallagher pisses all over John Mayer.

Well I mean I’m a much much bigger Rory fan than Mayer. Rory is my second favorite guitarist of all time. Paul Kossoff being my number one. But to be fair John Mayer is extremely different, so I’d never think of comparing them.

AWESOME...Dave is the man for that series
It was about 1973 I first started trying to learn Rory tunes and listened to little else for a few years, catching his gigs when I could and searching out every interview, and article.
I can't believe that you don't have any MXR pedals in the mix. They were a major pedal back in the 70's along with Boss and Electro Harmonix?? It's 👍 great to see Dave on the show!!!
This is a nice one. Love Rory :)
Rory G is absolutely unreal
Thanks a lot! The treble booster goes a long way towards explaining why I failed to get the sound.
Keep these coming, Dave’s skill and knowledge are top tier.
Finally the most anticipated episode. Awesome stuff!
Lee, you need to listen to some Rory. He was the reason I started playing guitar and an absolute legend. Irish tour ‘74 is my recommendation to start🤟🤟
Just watched all the episodes so far and love it all. Loving the approach to dialing in the Simps-tones.
Rory is what inspired me to pick a Strat up, and that first Strat turned into a full blown obsession. So happy to have found his music.
Dave is amazing, love when he is a guest!🌼
Love this series of vids.Daves' knowledge of his subject matter is awesome.
Awesome as always ❤️
Really enjoyed this! These Dave videos are my favorite on Andertons. He’s an incredible talent.
Excellent! I was hoping that Dave would be back this week.
I felt bad for not knowing a whole lot about Rory at all, glad I seem to not be the only one. I've been listening more and more recently and plan on having a playlist on today at work.
...that was really great ...thank you both!
These videos are brilliant 👏🏼
More Dave please! Another great video!
Love these. Thanks guys! 🤘
Dave is fantastic thank you very much, please include him again in your fantastic shows thanks to you all wow what entertainment 👍🏻👍🏻🎸🎸🙏
Dave’s so versatile, every video with him that I watch just shows me how I still underestimate him - a really great great great player!!!
It's great to see Rory being highlighted in this vid. He's one of the greatest ever, but so often overlooked. Check out "Bought and Sold" or "Cruise on Out". He was one of the original rock gods. Recognised by all his peers, including Hendrix, but seems to only be noted in Ireland now.
Love you Andertons, for inviting Dave - that is so great - thank you
Love it...Bring Dave back for more!!!!
Great to see Dave on here 👏👏👏 Our favourite KZread guitarist
Great stuff! Keep on doing theese videos.
absolutley awesome thanks Dave n Capt
