China produces more engineers and techies than the west by a significant multiple. 30 % of the tech work force in r & d and development in chip industry in the USA are ethnic chinese. 250,000 workers in Silicon Valley are ethnic chiese. Great work and precise information. What I believe is most of the home appliances and auto industry donot require 14nm or 7nm or less. 40nm will do the job. So China will still be leading in such area. The other aspect is what is the use of high western technology if they cannot sell in the world largest consumer market China. What is the use of innovations if you are not able to commercialize them. China is doing really good. It will take time but getting to 5nm from 7nm will be faster than getting to 3nm from 5nm. So in few years chinese chip industry will not only catchup but over takes the current leaders as theh have the capital, experts and above all a huge domestic market. For most of the companies in china domestic market is more than enough to survive and keep innovating.

  • @michaelschmid9567

    @michaelschmid9567

    3 жыл бұрын

    I agree with you about the 40nm. This is, what most analysts overlook. The high-end 5nm or 10nm chips only make max. 5% of the chip market, the rest is >14nm, and this is what china can manufacture today. The big western chip companies like TI, Analog Device, ST Mircro and so on, have now lead times of 52 weeks for there chips. When chinese companies can offer an replacement, with a short lead time, most product designers will switch over. I am not understanding, what the US plan is. But it looks very dangerous to there own chip industry. I guess, TSMC has no interest to produce low-profit 40nm chips, and this together with the US sanction on chinese fabs, has generated the chip shortage. This gives china now the perfect opportunity, to fill the vacuum.

    There’s also the retail cost factor in the equation. For example: Going from 7nm to 3nm requires buying/ developing new equipment costing billions of dollars. Ultimately, that high cost will be paid by the cost-sensitive buyers and consumers. For many semiconductor business it makes good business sense to continue using legacy technology instead of the latest and greatest cutting edge technology that makes 3nm. The bottom line and percentage of market share are two important metrics in every business. China is world renown as a least cost mass producer - the ‘China Price’ phenomenon. For China semiconductor business the urgency to adopt the latest and greatest cutting edge technology won’t materialize until the profit and market share justifies the extraordinary cost.

    Yes, China's working on leapfrogging its competitors with third-generation semiconductors. ------ China's first and the world's third silicon carbide vertically integrated industrial chain will be put into production in Changsha High-tech Industrial Park in Central China's Hunan Province in July, media reports said. Industry insiders said it marks a further step in developing the domestic semiconductor sector and ensuring supply amid the US blockade targeting China. The plant will be capable of producing 30,000 6-inch silicon carbide wafers per month once put into operation. After completion, the Hunan San'an Semiconductor Base is expected to achieve annual sales of 12 billion yuan, media reports said. This mass production will be of great significance for China's third-generation semiconductor chip industry, experts said. (Global Times June 23, 2021)

    @@dvidfmar Glad you corrected yourself, because the US (my country) hasn't been the leading chip designer or manufacturer since the 1980s! Even the US automotive industry has fared better against East Asian competitors than our chip and semiconductor industry. Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan replaced the US in semiconductors by early this century, then South Korea pushed out Japan, and Taiwan replaced South Korea. Your perspective is that "once on top = always on top", yet you've acknowledged that Taiwan, with a population of +23.56 million, has replaced the US, with a population of 328.2 million. What you seem to be blissfully unaware of is that East and SE Asians and Asian Americans were disproportionately represented in the US semiconductor industry in both design and production from the 1980s onwards, and were largely responsible for our strengths relative to European rivals in this industry!😄 The skills and knowledge they developed also enabled them to jump ahead in their ancestral/home countries! Currently, despite US pressure, over 42% of Taiwan's exports by value go to the PRC, as opposed to 14% to the US. Semiconductors represent most of these exports to both nations by value. Beijing was quite comfortable with importing chips and other semiconductors designed and made by their fellow Han right on their doorstep, while Taiwan earns billions in revenue each year by exporting to the PRC, which is both far and away their largest export market, and the largest market in the world today. By forcing the PRC to shift to domestic chip and other semiconductor design and production, the US will deprive Taiwan of trillions in trade revenue, while unwittingly fostering the PRC's greater self sufficiency. Taiwan's economy is both far more dependent on exports and far smaller than that of the PRC. They don't have the PRC's huge internal market or their extremely diverse economic base, and are now dependent economically on the PRC, which won't be dependent on Taiwan for anything in the future!🤣 China now produces more STEM grads than any other nation today; 4.6 million in 2016, versus 2.7 million in India, and 568,000 in the US, according to World Economic Forum data. Unlike other nations, the US includes such easy, fake science subjects as psychology, gender studies, and sociology in our approved list of STEM fields! With such an enormous pool of talent in China, Taiwan can't compete in the long run. Now Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger is warning that "the West is too dependent on (East and SE) Asia for chips", and our Congress is panicking and planning on allocating between US$120 billion and US$190 billion to upgrade US STEM education to "better compete with China", just as they did in response to the USSR's first Sputnik launch. Too bad for those self deluding, stunningly racist fools who keep posting on social media that "the Chinese can't innovate, they can only copy and steal".

    The biggest problem in the USA does not exist in China where most CPP members are engineers or science graduates, whereas most US Congress members and senators are millionaire lawyers with a few businessmen and doctors thrown in. To them infrastructures and science investments by the state has too little effect on their wallet to merit consideration. Am I wrong to think that the Chinese leaders are more interested in the well-being of their population then our own? It sure feels this way.

    China is not going produce anything that there is no global demands. The main demand is from 14nm and above. SMIC is profiting immensely by it. The 5nm and 3nm is at best 5% of the chip market. At this stage even 7nm is more than enough. Even 5G mobile phones can use 7nm. There are other reasons why people buy a mobile phone. A 7nm phone has been known to perform better than an Apple 12 5nm. ‘Perform better’ could mean better camera or better battery or better screen or better feel or simply better marketing. My Apple 11 have problem at times detecting 4G network. I have to switch off and on. The design? Forget it. SMIC will corner the market with the other foundries in China. Taiwan and SKorea and USA will lose the China usd350b and growing rapidly semiconductor market.

    You are behind time to think that China intends to catch up with US on the high end vintage chip manufacturing for 10 nm and smaller. China could manufacture the low end chips. For high end chips, China detoured to an alternative route in graphene and photonic chips in which China is ahead as it began research more than 10 years ago. In about two years time, these highly advance chips which are much better than the silicon chips would come into fruition thru' Huawei and then by other Chinese companies. Then bye bye to US tech and chips. China is famous for leap frogging, what's more with the huge return of talent from Trump's racial profiling and arbitrary accusation against the Chinese in US. It doesn't really matters whether the new chip investments are state of private driven. China's economic numbers and the US's pipe dreams of curtailing China's rightful development only make the Chinese achieve results faster. Look at Huawei and Xinjiang. They're so popular, all thanks to US.

    This is just in!!!!!!!! Huawei has taken a big move and bravely moved forward under the US chip ban, and started research in another field, namely photonic chips. The performance of this chip is better than existing chips, and does not require lithography machines produced by European and American companies. The Dutch media commented on this that the US lithography machine blockade is meaningless, and China may not need these equipment to produce high-end chips in the future. At the same time, the Russian media also attached great importance to this move by Huawei. They said that the United States underestimated the strength and determination of Chinese companies, and the blockade would only arouse challenges from Chinese companies. Blocking the lithography machine is meaningless inf.news/en/tech/339cd07fe2ecab1fc52fe7c88b7e8e8a.html

    The reason China is moving ahead faster than USA is that China places more emphasis on forming/educating engineers, whereas we place our emphasis in forming financial experts. So, their pool of tech people is increasing faster than ours. Sanctions are not a cure for our failing to address this technical educational issue that we have neglected for too long. In a not too far future, if we do not address this issue, we will have to import chinese engineers to help us out............... and they may no longer want to come to America.

    China can hit back at countries that block its access to chip but it won't do that although it has hurt their businesses especially Huawei tremendously. @Aikky Tan Yes, I agree with you. China has been throwing hints hoping Biden would come to his senses but it looks like his administration isn't budging yet sanctioning more of China's technology companies. The current shortages of chips are affecting many industries worldwide, including Americans. Besides rare earth, there other tools to use to hit back but my guess is that China prefers to maintain its business friendly and trustworthy image and reputation instead of being dragged down to the same low level as the US. Would any new technology startups want to be based in the US or in any of its allies country which could become a political football? Nokia is refusing to accept Sweden's ban on Huawei. Ultimately, the US has lost its credibility. It's like asking if Iran will still sign an agreement with the US to restore the JOCPA which Trump had ripped apart.
