When you were an unarmed slave trying to escape your armed lord's abuses, it makes perfect sense to use all that trickery and to try to escape as quickly as possible! His lesson made me realize that so clearly: what an amazing teacher!

Professor? That's Mestre Malandro! And he is one of the greatest American Capoeiristas of our era! Humble and deadly! His sweeps have taken to the ground many times over the last 25 years! Valeu Mestre Maladro! Thankyou for the educational video Kevin!

Wow, a descendant of Bimba! This guy is capoeira royalty! The takedown reminds me of tani-otoshi - you see it a lot in some TCMA as well. Did not realize there was so much grappling in capoeira. That dropdown to kick, OMG. This is why capoeira scares me the most - they have a whole other vocabulary of movement Thanks for the great vid!

@Andrew I was going to reply the same thing. Also that style Batuque was a grappling take down style. Bimba adding that into the grappling that already existed in Capoeira really expanded its grappling capabilities. Its sad that Batuque has disappeared.

Really seems like the art kind of fills in gaps that other martial arts lack, rather than going into a recovery phase, you let the opponent feel as if their technique was successful, then punish. Really really cool stuff.

As a practioner of Capoeira I maust to say that this is one the best videos about this art made by a no-capoeira practioner.
Capoeira is beautiful. Its a mix of dance and fighting.
@fireeaglefitnessmartialart935

It's using dance like movements, so the other person doesn't know you're fighting, till they get hit.
This is the first time I have seen a good and positive video made by a non Capoeira practitioner
It's not the art style that will keep you safe in street self defence, its the competance of the practitioner. A good fighter (regardless of tyle) with experience in reading opponents and situational awareness is going to fair better than someone who isn't. Capoeira IS a beautiful artform though, the history and culture behind it is great.
Professor Malandro showcases why I believe capoeira is one of the best arts for learning how to escape a situation.
the best example and explaination of Capoeira i've heard thus far, good info.
As a brazilian I am happy with the gracious respect that our root cultural martial art are been treated. 🙂
That body sweep is in karate, judo, and kung fu too. (I think its also in Silat, but I'm not sure.) Its one of those universal techniques that every art includes because its so natural for human movement and it flows out of a situation that happens so often. The jinga step also keeps you constantly primed to pull counter.
@zuhailishufller8046

Yes. Silat has that body sweep. You right on that one. Even Muay Boran has that body sweep technique which is surprising how similar and universal martial arts movement even if it was separated by geography and culture
@Raivon

@@zuhailishufller8046 Makes sense since there's only so many ways the human body can move, so it's pretty cool that wildly different martial arts can still end up with similar techniques

Agree with the others, same type sweep in both Silat and Kali . Sometimes used like a shove as well. In the end all fighting is just physics and biology so makes sense we end up in the same place . One thing I make sure to do when doing it is grab some clothes with the rear hand so the opponent doesnt just step back to escape .

I like some of the ground techniques and takedowns that Capoeira has more than the acrobatic flips and kicks. I think a lot of people arent even aware how effective it is from a low position. The negativa is similar to something I have seen in Silat.

I know you can make anything work bc you’re a warrior. Capoeira and Silat have alot in common. Especially considering lower kicks. I’d love to know where fighting cultures met at whatever point in time. But I feel we’ll never know bc history is intentionally being erased. Martial arts are beautiful. The topic should be shown more attention. It’s where we all come from. We all decent from slaves and warriors. This fact should not be ignored. But pride should be shown for all. Not just chosen groups according to appointed fads.
This was dope to see the subtle ways one can use capoeira defend themselves and surprise an attacker at the same time. Well done 👏🏾👏🏾
This is very informative. You can see how good a teacher Prof Malandro is.
Such a great breakdown of what capoeira is AND it’s practical usage! PLEASE bring him back! I’d like to see more! 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾💪🏾💪🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾♥️

@Ricardo Oliveira I really hope that Brazil 🇧🇷 puts the infighting aside and puts the Combat version of Capoeira out front. This video actually made Capoeira approachable to me wanting to learn this. Normally Capoeira looks like the tricking version of Taekwondo. Meaning it looks like it could be only for the young and athletic. I really want to try Danmye Ladja and Capoeira now.
I've always liked capoeira as one of the best "sideboard" martial arts--which I hope doesn't come off as an insult. I mean that I wouldn't train primarily in capoeira for either self defense or combat sport purposes, but I would love to have a lot of its moves in my arsenal, especially for unorthodox positions.

Capoeira not making sense to people watching is the reason why the people and the Martial art survived the brutality of slavery in the Americas. Keep your eyes open because what you see ain't what you get over here. 🤔
Malandro is very graceful.
One thing to think about is - doing jinga strengthens your body from the ground up. Then you ad the cartwheels - total body conditioning!

The music at the end got me ahahah. 😂 Thank you both for making this great video. 🙏
I do Capoeira, but also did many other martial arts. Capoeira is great for flexibility, fighting fitness, body awareness. What it isn't good at, and indeed makes your regular practice a liability: you do timing with someone else (fighting requires you to break timing, not get a rythm); there is little awareness of problems of exposing your neck and head; it doesn't make you aware of rear attacks; the minimal grappling, while making you comfortable to have body contact, doesn't teach you any proper close contact grappling (pretty necessary in all self defense). Saying all this, I do think useful for training kicks, and indeed have used a bancao in self-defense, also if you're accurate with kicks, you can get a knock out. As a disclaimer: one-on-one fighting with punches and kicks is not self-defense, its combat.
@Alkis05

The rhythm thing is very dependent on how you train it. In my roda, we are supposed to punish people that are being too predictable. That is exactly when sweeps and other take downs happen. You are supposed to learn how break the rhythm with feints and missteps and variations. In a way, being rhythmic is feint. You are promising to keep it, but you have to be alert and brake that promise at the right time. As for grappling, you need to train with specialists, like it is the case for any other striker.
Great coach!
Capoeira is such a cool and unique martial art. I'd love to practice it one day.

18:07 - a higher-height variant of that ground kick would also be effective but it is at a smaller target - to the head, while you are on the ground, but you must snap your leg straight up to the head while on the ground to get that kick right. That kick is called an "escorpiao" or scorpion kick. Usually you kick on either leg, depending how good the leg is. Additionally, you can turn your back to the opponent in cocorinha (squat) with two hands on ground, wait for the opponent to come over you and then do the "escorpiao" to the face.

My favorite kick out of Capoeira. It's so underused in combat fighting which should be a Capital sin. The speed you can pop it out can get so ludicrous...I actually do understand why some may not use it because it's brutal.

Capoeira é uma das melhores lutas de todos os tempos aqui no Brasil é lendária 💪🏼🦵🏼🇧🇷

I’ve been training capoeira for a while and I would like to say this was a great video! Vingativa part was very well explained. But for me I don’t think I would be able to pull off doing it against the punch. In capoeira training that move is mostly practice with countering an opponent’s kick. If the opponent has actual experience and can punch with good form, my untrained eye would not be able to react to it as that takedown. Chapéu de couro is probably my favorite kick. I also do think that this kick can be used in a fight. I liked how he was talking about faints for making the opponent flinch to a vulnerable position because there’s a lot of that aspect in a capoeira game (jogo) as well. He was a great teacher and I really enjoyed this video. Axé!
Wow great video Guro Kevin 🙏☯️😎❤️🌈🔆❄️⚔️🪨🔥😂💪👊🦶
Fantastic,he is pretty knowledgeable of the Art and Dance form 🤸📸
People don't understand capoeira is a way to educate the body, to gain speed, develop smartness and fitness. There are very many tough capoiristas, but it is not because of capoeira, it is because of themselves. Toughness is a thing beynd capoeira.
Very interresting!

whatever you practice doesnt matter. what matters is if you train to fight , period. I dont care if you do any kind of grapling , muy thai, boxing, whatever. if you dont traing to fight, nothing you practice will be good. people keep focusing on styles instead of the intent of the practioner. make videos with the title,"Can practicing martial arts casually work for self defense?"

Very Good.
Love the fact my African brother and sisters created a martial art by dancing. Imagine telling your boss you got ass beat to a guy bboying lol
what a good video
Capoeira has a lot of good to offer. Just like any martial art, it has its holes, but youre training athleticism in a combat context, with another person who is not standing still(at least in the games(roda)). The mestre my instructor learned under has a blackbelt in judo, so the takedowns were more emphasized in our classes. Though i wasnt really good at them, even though inliked them. To me, a lot of the standing movements reminded me of boxing, just more exaggerated. But really, capoeira movements are more akin to shadow-wrestling.
I would love to see bajiquan applications!
