Buy yourself an Arrma Infraction or Felony. You can watch a set of tires get destroyed in a battery pack or 2. It's a glorious thing and well worth the money.

Those timelapses are incredibly satisfying. I've never seen ruts develop in such detail.. Those RC cars are 1000% more reliable than my old Jeep.

I'd love to see how hobby grade RCs hole up to this test. Especially ones that are known to be durable and high quality such as a traxxas slash, trx4, axial scx10 and such

I believe in addition to the rc's longevity we are learning why road maintenance is very important.

29:00 and 34:20 the drive gear is made of nylon to be sacrificial and protect the motor. It's cheaper to replace a nylon gear than a burnt out motor if something in the drivetrain gets stuck.

@@ismaelyu5 I don't even see them as toy grade really. Cheap and Chinese, yes, but hardly toy grade. They are literally designed to be taken apart and rebuilt etc. That was what always differentiated toy grade and hobby grade. Not many toy grades with a brushless motor or even oil shocks or universal joints. If Tamiya and Kyosho can get a pass with entry level 2WD buggies with friction shocks and plastic dog bones then these things can't fairly be called toy grade. It just doesn't make any sense. They have literally nothing in common with stuff from New Bright and Masito etc.

Pretty much every RC brand out there has plastic spurs on at least some of their models. It's pretty much standard for 1/10 and smaller. Even the 6s version of the Traxxas X-maxx had a plastic spur and many 8s users have adopted them because they are quieter, and when mesh and clutch are set correctly, they are generally petty durable.

I am not even that big into RC stuff, I enjoy it, but I simply don't have the time or money to get too involved. But watching this video, I was just tuned in. I love all of it. I could tell you sincerely put a lot of time and effort into, and the songs were just hilarious. Thanks for the entertainment. I subscribed and thumbed up to support, keep it going!

It would be neat to see a treadmill type experiment with an rc car to have an environment that is controlled with either bumps or no bumps and no rain and mud because that is what seems to wear down a ton of suspension parts.

True, it would be interesting, but it would have to be a road car design. Im not sure about you, but if I had a RC truck, I would be treating it far less kindly than a muddy circle. Im a boat guy, and one of the things that I love about my RC boats I can do things with them that would surely kill me or destroy the boat if I tried them in my actual ski boat. going full send over a wave 3x the height of the boat is awesome fun, but I only land it 1/4 of the time. I never take my boats out without bathers on and a towel, going for a swim isn't guaranteed, but is rather likely.

All new cars should do 10k miles first year with just fuel added. Maybe scale time would be another good comparison....100k miles is approx 10 years I think

@@gownerjones1450 agreed. Also depends on country. I've done 20k miles some years. 2k others. Question is, would you expect to run the same car for the 100k over 25 years without doing much? In my country car life expectancy is less than 20 years. This whole test is a good bit of fun and probably most interesting is projecting how long our toys will live with normal use. My 1/8 is 2 years old, run less than once a week: wheel bearings are shot and its on 2nd rear diff (aside from crash damage). Even on a time basis, it's not doing well.

...dnd if you only drive on roads that have bumbs higher than the tire profile all over. If the first thing to fail in a real car is wheel bearing or drive axle, you know that the road conditions are harsh! (In reality, most real world cars would drop a ball joint on roads this harsh and then the tyre would go sideways.)

@@to._can I wouldnt do 10K miles without an oil (and other fluids) change in a new car though lmao. The motor working itself in causes metal shavings to pool up in the filter and oil pan. That shit circulating in the system for 7-9K more miles would be bad news xD

One of the most enjoyable RC videos ever made. Thank you for all the hard work you put into this.

Now you should make a video where you fix and repair as much of the damaged parts that you can and see if you can get them working again. Maybe you could even upgrade and strengthen the parts that failed? I think it would be a interesting video to watch and see what parts could be made stronger or what parts could be upgraded. Plus it would be fun to see all these cars working again after the torture they went through. Plus if you fixed them maybe you could try this test again in the summer when temperatures are higher, there is more sun and it’s not raining so much.

My senton has been great except for the fact that I've had to replace the steering servo and take the motor apart to free up a seized motor bearing in the year or so I've had it. And then there's my scx10 ii...

@@reidbainbridge7 yea servos seem to be the #1 weakpoint in every RTR. Sucks about that seized bearing I hear those spektrum motors always have issues. Is the scx10ii tough? Outside of the servo I think a trx-4 is damn near indestructible so I’d hope scx10s are equally as tough, love the look of an scx10 deadbolt 😍

This is the most entertaining video i have seen in a long time!!! I loved this. Some thoughts: 1. We need more! I'd love to see a Traxxas or Arma car do this 2. For scale comparison, the price should also be scaled. I don't see a $3000 brand new car driving 100000 miles. 3. It would be a really fun livestream for nerds like me. 4. I agree! Livestream might be a bit much, but I'd love to see not only different manufacturers, but also different designs of vehicle! The two that immediately pop into my head are 1/10th Scale Short Course Trucks and either 1/10th or 1/8th Scale Buggies (1/10th scale might be interesting, but the design varies more widely, and last I recall 1/10 SCTs are more similar in design and component size to 1/8th). The big one for me would be comparing the Slash 4WD to the Arma SCT, since the chassis designs are so different (Traxxas has a tub style which offers protection, but the metal components on the 1/8 scale derived Senton may prove to be an advantage). Maybe throw in an Upgraded 1/8th Buggy or 1/10 SCT (ex. CFRP/Al Chassis Braces, high end servo, splash guards, higher quality sealed bearings) to see how many miles it's actually possible to get out of one! My guess is even on the larger cars, the thing that will fail the most will be the plastic ball joints used on the suspension. Failed on this lighter car, and while the plastic formulation changes and some companies use inserts, most Independent Suspension cars use similar links.

In regards to the price, I think it would be more accurate to multiply the scale 3 times because in terms of volume or amount of material used to build it, a real car is 10 times bigger in length, width and height (for a 1/10 scale). If we only do 10 x 10 its effectively a 2D car! So $3000 would be more like $30,000 which aligns roughly with a real car.

I appreciate the effort put into this test! Would be interesting to try some of the same cars but in a hamster wheel kind of situation and compare the results.

I think one improvement could be an arm attached to the center pole which extends out (supported by a pole with a wheel at the bottom), that way the cable tether doesn't need to be tensioned.

Some comment, that might help in classifying your failures: when testing for reliability in my engineering department we differentiate between MTBF (mean time between failure) and MTBRV (mean time to repair visit). Basically if some error appears that can be recovered by the user, we consider this to be a MTBF event. If a failure happens that needs repairs, we consider this as a MTBRV event.

It won't make any meaningful difference as the majority of the wear is from repeated stress on the plastic and metal parts and not from friction. The widening of the shock screw mounting hole is a perfect example of that.

I own a Traxxas 4tec 2.0 Vxl had it for about 4-5 years now, let me tell u thing still runs just like new never needed to replace anything. in fact I upgraded it to now do 100 mph and it's driven about a couple times every month or two now but when i first had it, it was ran everyday

Actually I bet those expensive ones won't last much longer than the cheaper ones. I once maxed out a relatively cheap 200buck (from native aliexpress called TaoBao) 1/10 truck with aluminum parts which cost me around another extra 50 . It had a flaw in its design that would have the shafts fall out the front wheels if I turn too much. otherwise it lasted fine until I decided the design flaw cost me too many shafts and stripped it. These things have full steel gears and good quality bearings. They just cut down the cost by reusing the same gears in many models and only change the plastic parts. Magic of mass production.

I’ve had a Chinese pangolin rock crawler and twice I’ve had the diff center round off where the axles are inserted with only a few hours use, My axial 10.2 and a vaterra ascender have had zero failures and I’ve had them for about 5 years now so they are definitely better by a lot

The major difference between cheap and expensive RC is the expensive have parts that is designed to fail. And they have spare parts. Like a real car you need to do maintenance on your RC car, but unlike a real car you need to service it a lot more, specially if you run it hard, I bet the numbers would look difference if after every night, or 48 hours the cars gets a service, (Re lube and bolt tightening, suspension oil, electric cleaner and new parts when one of the "replacement parts" broke), Source: Im a former RC repair man.

@@yuxuanhuang3523 Sounds like it wasn't design that well from the factory if such a basic feature of turning cause the shafts to fall out. Something you don't get from the more expensive brands. Another way to cut down cost is not paying for a good design and R&D team. Those expensive RC last much longer when it comes to bashing for this reason.

As others have said, setting up a treadmill with attached bumps could give you a course where you could test off-road and on-road RCs.

The nylon spur gear with all other gears being metal was the weak point of failure. That is designed in all RC cars - better to have a single point of failure in one cheap spur gear than to blow up metal diffs.

Yep, it's annoying, but it does save you some money in the long run having 1 more easily accessible part break, than a diff or something deeper in a gearbox.

That also being said it probably failed from being poorly spaced from factory, I've been using the same spur gears for years under racing conditions and haven't had one strip on me yet by spacing it by feel rather then the paper method which is how most are spaced from factory

@@crimcyan3037 Paper method is pretty good for meshing the gears, I’ve been working on rc cars for awhile now and can mesh them by sight and sound when you make them “tink” when moving the spur with your finger side to side against the pinion

True, that a thing that you also see in bigger drive motors, its a lot cheaper to make a easy to replace "failure part", then have al the parts at stock. When the metal gears are down for replacement: your whole car is.

The triple differential system in the RC tank is actually used in full sized tanks and works by linking the gear ratio between the motor and the tracks to the speed and direction of the steering motor. This makes control simpler and smoother and also allows the use of control electronics designed for use in wheeled RC cars.

Also, it's probably easier to make the tank go straight this way, as the manufacturer wouldn't have to spend effort ensuring the speed of the left and right motors were the same.

not to mention though 45 miles is pretty good even for a real tank. especially a new one. new ones well new military vehicles have inevitable quality control issues parts that initially will fail regardless of what you do. i'd rather take a old vehicle with 300-400 miles on it than a new one with 5 miles on the odometer. i operate AAV's in the marines but its the same for any tank or tracked armored vehicle. generally they're sent to be remanufactured at around 1200 miles. most miles i've seen on one is 2000 miles. 2000 miles is about 2.5-3 years of use. and that's alot of use considering their top speed is 45 mph. and you're only driving in a small training area generally. 5 miles here and 5 miles back 3-4 days a week once a month really adds up. hence why our job is harder than what infantry do. when they're not actively training they can chill for a few days. when we're not actively training we got a 26 ton machine thats got to be well lubricated and greased up and all the bolts checked for tightness.

The strange motor and transmission configuration on the tank probably makes it more precise. With the steering motor stopped, the two planetary gear assemblies will be forced to rotate at the same speed, so both tracks will go at the same speed and the tank will drive straight. Then you can precisely regulate how much the tank turns by running the steering motor in one direction or the other; the steering motor will subtract speed from one side and add the same amount of speed to the other side. To get the same precision from a dual-drive-motor design, you'd need a speed controller that could measure and synchronize the RPMs of both drive motors continuously, whereas the tank's transmission does the same thing purely mechanically. It's actually pretty ingenious now that I've seen how it works.

the strange configuration looks weird because its literally an actual style of tank transmission, just substituting a secondary motor for a clutch-case because at scale a motor will perform better then a series of friction plates. this is technically the shitty 4 speed transmission from a t-34, but locked in second gear as stalin intended

Worked on a project for electrifying a real tank some 10+ years ago and the steering and drive motors for this was just as in the scale model. Main difference was that each motor had two sets of windings and two controllers for redundancy. So the model is based on a real configuration.

@@RadioMan2023 No I personally did not get a tank. The company I worked for were contracted to deliver the electric drive systems and motors to a company that builds tanks. This was for a prototype. That is why i know a bit how it was built.

The use of nylon gears, or bronze gears in a gear train of any kind is usually a manufactured weak point. If the system should become jammed, better to have those particular gears strip out then to have the expensive stuff blow up/strip out. The big round nylon drive gear is cheap and easy to replace compared to the differential.

Exactly, my buddy got a steel spur gear for his RC and I told him I wouldn't run that on my RCs because of that reason. Sure enough eventually he got a pebble in it and instead of stripping a 5$ spur gear his whole motor shaft snapped killing his motor and it was a Castle Mamba system so not cheap 😂.

Use your slipper clutches, gentlemen! Some plastic gears are actually an advantage over metal. Quieter, self lubricating, light weight... Metal gears are noisy/ less efficient and require constant lubrication, or they wear right out.

My Trophy truck and Truggy RC's are setup that way so if i take too big a bite the power transfer won't break the internal drive train and at worse just strip the spur gear. There are certain parts of my suspension I keep plastic as well for close to the same reason.

Loved this video so much! Would be cool if you could do one with something rigged up to make them tow weight , see which ones can tow the most for the longest to give a true test to internal gears etc. even putting 2-3-4 pound weights onto them would be cool to see.

Back when I was around 10/12 years old (am 50 now), my Dad was ex RAF, and we lived near RAF Northolt (West London), and he was into 'Round the pole aircraft', he made two planes, an Me109 and a Spitfire, had the motors powered the same way you have with the cars, laid down a huge cardboard ring as a runway, and with two large height gaps between the two wires/power leads up the pole, could have two people run the model aircraft together as a form of chase/dogfight scenario... He showed it for a couple of years at the 'Open Day' they had at the airbase, and I loved it hahaha.. So on watching this it just took me right back! Thanks pal 👍👏 😎🇬🇧

36:00 at this price point I suspect that it's hard to get two matched motors to allow differential torque steering and make it easy for inexperienced drivers to drive in a straight line. Years ago I built a Lego Mindstorms tank using the double-differential system for precisely this reason. The Wikipedia article on tank steering systems provides a lot more information.

Came here to voice the same assumption. I do wonder though if augmenting the 2-drive-motor setup with some speed sensors and electronics to synchronize their speed would make it cheaper (or at least more reliable), considering you wouldn't need as many of those little gears.

when you think of it, many real cars need many services done in able to reach 100,000 miles, most recommend at least an oil change every 5,000, and other services at varying mileages. I would be interested to find out if after a "scaled" 5k miles they get a check up and see if they last longer after obvious issues fixed.

About the RC tank, the steering system that uses a power motor to make the tracks move and the drive motore for the direction is accurate, basically every tank uses this system, for example the german panzers except for the maus( which uses a diesel engine to power 2 electric motors), the t-34, Abrams, l33cc, Leopard(exception for the bt5, bt7 and bt42 which has the Christie suspension which would make It move without tracks)

Traxxas aren't high end, just incredibly smart sponsorships/buyouts and advertising for their cheap nasty gear. Plus a few smart patient takeovers which allowed them to sue some of their competitors to the point where they had to rebrand or sellout. Most people fall into the traxxas trap when buying their first RC, they buy what is marketed as a "high end hobby grade" rc for their kid/s, only to end up spending 100s of extra dollars on replacement "upgrades" when all of the cheap nasty plastics give out

@@SuperRandykid Saying that people get suckered into to buying a Traxxas car for their kid is completely wrong, most people reach out online to make sure they get the right thing. Buying one of the "cheaper" brushed Traxxas cars like a slash, rustler, bandit or stampede is a great way to start your kid off. They are actually pretty durable and parts are cheap compared to a lot of other brands.

@@SuperRandykid "high end" is maybe a stretch but certainly Traxxas makes hobby grade RCs with widespread parts and aftermarket support, they have their place in the hobby. Some of the designs are older, others more up to date, and some are even innovative or were when they came out. I think that just the fact that we're here discussing how good or not Traxxas is makes them relevant to test, there is definitely controversy around whether they deserve a place next to other hobby grade brands. Their older 10th scale models like the Slash 2wd, Rustler, Stampede, and Bandit all use quite small axle carrier bearings compared to most designs these days, but I can't help but think that they might still outlast some no name banggood car with no oil in the shocks.

Wonderful idea to test these. To interpret the results correctly, you have to keep in mind, that regular cars have to go though maintenance regularly. In Germany for example, you need your car to be checked at least every two years. These required intervals are different for different types of vehicles.

Hah. True, and over here as long as you pay your registration fees, you're good to go. We don't even smog check. But I think your point stands. If I had a pin fall out of my hub I'd definitely go fix it, instead of letting it flop all over the place and wear out even faster.

I think anyone that goes off roading to the extent that these RC cars were, would spend at least a LITTLE time doing cleaning and preventative maintenance too.

whilst i think the circle is hilarious and i love the timelapses, i think it'd be interesting to see the same thing on a treadmill style test

Could be done pretty easy with a craigslist treadmill, the cars don't weigh much so you wouldn't need to worry much about wearing out the mill, probably the worst part would be electricity and trying to keep the cars from drifting and falling off/trying to climb up the side off the belt. Gut a treadmill and put a wider belt/multiple belts on two pipes as the rollers, mill motor and electronics to run it so you keep speed control. You could even move one roller up or down to simulate grades. How many miles of climbing at xx degrees can it handle, etc. Easy timelapse too since it's not really going anywhere

To be fair, the engineers that design these things tend to know which parts will be abused while the other bits will not require more than flimsy, cheap bits. The reason why the flimsy bits look like they have lasted is owed to the fact that they aren't stressed as much as the actual load and stress bearing components. Although I agree the tank could have used a better material for the gearbox and the housing. The engine itself just melted through and probably would have dug its way out if allowed to run lol

34:25 It's common to have the spur gear plastic and all the other gears metal. It's an intentional weak link that is easy to replace. You can't 100% prevent things from breaking so you design in a piece that is preferable to break and make it the link in the chain that is going to break. I made this mistake on my xmaxx... upgraded the lower suspension arms and then instead of one of them breaking it broke the rear bulkhead where they connect, which was more expensive and much more work to replace. It's literally sitting in pieces next to me waiting for parts to arrive.

It's not only the weakest link, but its also like the hard knife - soft cutting board dynamic. The softer a gear is the less it damages the gears touching it

I think the drive motor heat sink on the tank was backwards, they had it inside the enclosed gearbox which does next to nothing, but if the larger louvered fin was outside, it would help significantly.

this is the second video I've seen from you and let me tell you it was original it was fantastic you are the coolest… This video was absolutely awesome. I just loved it. I don't know what to say this video did leave me speechless😱

2:13 they reason they do it the more complicated way is it is near impossible to perfectly synchronize two brushed or brushless motors so at high speed a tank like this will tent to pull towards one side or the other, where as having one motor drive both tracks and one motor adding and subtracting power, well it is very easy to run one motor full power and the other no power so your tank will always go straight unless the diff breaks.

This is also a common way of steering on real tanks, though they generally use another gearbox or a hydraulic motor to provide the steering torque to the diff.
