    Thanks for the video, nice to see what corners are cut that reduces sound quality. I don't have those issues because the X-statiks didn't have cost compromises in sound quality. I found another direct to consumer small manufacturer that builds amps on demand. They are Acustic Invader out of Serbia and have similar quality goals with a softer price shock. I think AV amps should be worthy of the impressive X-statiks.

    Hi all. First time commenting here. Mr. Richie states what (I think) many loudspeaker manufacturers actually do, they are forced to build to a design budget. Few manufacturers have the opportunity to build without these design budgets. Traditional business models suggest that perhaps 15% of the MSRP is the "real cost". Out of the remaining 85%, engineering costs, operatinal financing costs, etc. Freight charges can also be significant, in some cases as much as 50%. Manufacturers often end up with less than 10%. Danny should include freight charges to the end user in his kits to compare the upgrades more fairly. At the manufacturing level these sort of upgrades would not cost much, but they have to take their costs and mark them all up. Everything Danny does makes sense. Better parts are better. They need not be stupidly expensive (as he points out he often uses Dayton Audio parts via Parts Express). Removing any and all magnetic (ferrous) components, screws, etc is a way to begin improving or modifying a loudspeaker. Better inductors are as well. Simply removing iron core inductors from the crossovers, replacing them with air core types such as toroids, and improving the tolerances and type of passive components would take care of most of the remaining issues. The addition of a damping material (such as No-rez, or others) can help with mechanical noise in the enclosures. How much and of what type of acoustic batting can help as well. Danny continues to work on these modification projects and videos as a service to the audiophile community. They provide some insight into the sacrifices manufacturers must make to maintain profitability. I'm sure almost every manufacturer could benefit from developing their own upgrade paths, but in many cases it might be considered to be admitting their products can be improved upon. Thanks Danny

    Actually, at 2kHz to 4kHZ the sensitivity only dropped about 1db and the rest has been brought down to match it. The slightly higher impedance demands less current from the amp and makes them easier to drive.

    There's a lot of variables that go into great audio. I agree good parts will help but I would realize nature will side with the hidden flaw. Murphy's law If the recording is crap or any part of the audio chain is inferior, the signal will suffer. I would advocate decent components but I don't recommend losing your mind with perfection. If you have the money budgeted to spend then by all means indulge yourself. If you have more important needs, I think there's nothing wrong with downsizing the budget a bit. I also think the more you spend the more you expect and when it doesn't measure up or you find the flaw in the system, it's a bigger kick than getting a lower cost system. I've noticed much "high end" gear will have bigger problems, bigger upside but also bigger downside, because they're usually purpose built to do something extremely well. For example, buying a Ferrari won't do great as a daily driver because that's not what it's designed for. I think audio is similar.

    @@kohnfutner9637 That's why I've become a fan of pro audio monitors - designed to be flat, and you can adjust them from there. I got a killer deal on Adam Audio S3Vs, which are incredible. Not sure why so few others take this route. Even Adam Audio states on their website that these are good for home listening.

Once they go out the whole thing is a paperweight unless you know how to work on this stuff. The best luck I ever had with powered speakers were Sony Sava d900 that lasted probably 20 years but I did have to have the DVD player section worked on while it was under warranty. If an audio brand would get this stuff with simple replaceable amplifier, I would look into powered monitors without question. I love having everything designed to work together like they are designed without having to play guessing games. What makes me laugh is all the arguing over cables risers to "eliminate" vibration and some of the best sound speakers have it build in. Seems like cable risers are snake oil.

Does any other company else have that? It would be nice to buy a $3,000 speaker without a pound of cheese in the same manner you can get a car with all the bells and whistles and one with almost no extras on it. An audiophile should be able to pick up a speaker with great internal parts for a reasonable price. Companies can't be upcharging the better electronics by 400% in a speaker.

    Good question. Uniformity in the reflected energy, ... vis-à-vis the direct energy, is more subjectively pleasing. Yes, as you noted, ... laterally this uniformity is even more vital. The first sidewall reflection point is of great importance. Hence, in small room acoustics, it's best to either fully absorb, or fully diffuse that first lateral energy. (fully = broadband) Ideally you don't want to alter the spectral balance ... so either absorb it all or diffuse it all. The sound energy up at 1k requires about 3" of depth. 500hz, 6", likewise down at 250hz, needs about 12" of either diffusion depth or porous absorption depth. To affect low enough in frequency requires depth... in both absorption and diffusion. Physically deep and effective. Ideally, it's best if the spectral balance of the first reflected energy isn't altered appreciably.

    @@FOH3663 I expect I’m missing something so bear with me…in an example where a hypothetical full range ribbon of some lateral curvature and a height greater than the listener’s ears, is directly aimed at the listener, one would want some form of diffusion or absorption on the side walls but it wouldn’t be necessary on the ceiling or floor because there wouldn’t be any energy directed at or reflected from those planes?

  • @FOH3663

    @FOH3663

    Жыл бұрын

    @@olbucky9413 Got it... I'm missed the specificity, apologies. Even more interesting, hadn't given this much prior thought. Certainly a big panel or line type spreading of sources propagates energy forward, w/greater correlation than the time shifted mess bouncing off the ceiling and to the LP. There's still vertical energy propagating, it is however it's time shifted, combing according to freq/wavelength size. Thus, the lower/longer wavelengths sum more coherently, reflecting that energy. So, it's more an issue of low freqs rather than higher freqs. However, there's two additional challenges; 1.) In any room, modal behavior/room resonances are a given. Of those resonances, axial modes (between two boundaries) are dominant. Many residential rooms are plagued with issues associated with an 8 foot (2.44m) height dimension (peaks/dips @70hz, 140hz, 210hz ... etc.) 2.) Nothing good emanates from the ceiling. On the other hand, the pros and cons of sidewall energy can be argued either way... absorption, diffusion, redirection. However, reflected energy off the ceiling possesses no positive attributes. The ceiling to floor component of the room needs to be addressed... for obvious reasons the ceiling is much easier to treat than the floor. So you're right. Regarding the ceiling treatment, the upper freqs aren't the issue. The lower freqs however are, in both incident reflected energy, as well as damping the vertical axial resonances. Damn ... what a good question.

  • @olbucky9413

    @olbucky9413

    @@FOH3663 thanks for playing along with this thought experiment…I expect there would be phase issues with a laterally curved panel as well as the reflected energy to deal with. In the example of a big panel or even a shorter vertically oriented ribbon for that matter, if it were canted back at angle from the lp so that a perpendicular from the top of the panel struck the ceiling behind the listener’s ears, wouldn’t it reduce reflected energy from the floor, and the reflections from the ceiling and wall behind the lp should be similar to hall reverb? It strikes me this why di poles can sound so good when positioned properly. There must be problems with this approach or we would see more designs like this. It just got me thinking about the variety of different approaches we see in well respected speakers from horns, dipoles and focused arrays like the Wilsons and what if any common denominators there are. Intuition can only get me so far!

    @@olbucky9413 Struggled with much of that paragraph, maybe you can elaborate. re; dipoles Of the multiple reasons dipoles sound so good, is primarily the propagation characteristic into the room diminishes the room's acoustic distortions. Modal energy is easily excited, and dissipates slowly... overlaying everything. Dipoles don't energize modal influences like typical monopole sources... free from that obfuscation, bass textural details and clarity are more clearly resolved. (horns, dipole, focused arrays, plus point source, line array, omni, flush-mounted/soffited, ... each platform has it's primary strength, as they're all a balance of compromises.) Hi, GR Research, I find your territorials on HIFI equipment very interesting, I have been watching and listening to you for last two or three months partly because I have been rebuilding my transmission line loudspeaker cabinets that I built myself back in the early 80s they are a copy of a plan that was in the magazine they came back from the 70s, I had a big problem a few months ago my Cambridge power decided to throw a wobbly and blew my Twitter, So after doing a bit of research I found a company in the Netherlands that were extremely helpful and they have supplied me with new Woofers and new Tweeters made by SEAS , I have not yet changed any of the components in the crossover unit as I found the cabinets have now seen to come alive, They sound amazing, Have not yet done any equipment test for sound like what you do , Sorry I went off in a different tangent I was going to ask you a question about Focal Cobalt 806 JM LAB cabinets, I picked up a pair secondhand for around about €260 when I plug them in there was definitely a problem with one of the Tweeters, So I decided to take them all apart and have a look and I found that the magnet that was supposed to be in the plastic cage on the back of the tweeter was missing, it was stuck on the Woofer driver And on a closer inspection of the Tweeter The plastic cage that holds the magnet in place had fractured so the magnet I dropped out I have managed to re-locate it and it seems to work, I’ll like to try and find some new Tweeters for it, I have even contacted Focal had no response probably because I cannot speak French, And the company that I’ve been dealing with in the Netherlands said they require the measurements from the Tweeter for they can replace it for me, I have given them the serial number and details of the back of the unit they have tried I have tried but cannot find any details of its response. In your tutorial on this you were mentioning that you used to have their driving lesson do you know what these were supposed to be if so could you give me the information please so I could get some new drive units, this is Tweeters Ref. No TPCJM. SER. No 0103293 . This is the Woofers Ref . No 6W4251 . SER . No 0103306 . Thank you for your help. Kind regards. PHIL FROM THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOULIN FRANCE.

    Fine metal mesh, while it looks like it would be acoustically transparent, is far worse than a metal mesh with larger openings and thinner webbing. Preferably using hexagonal cutouts for maximal opening to support material. It's a shame that these speakers don't look amazing once you take the grill off of them, but if the upper end becomes that peaky with it on then it's a no-brainer what to do.

    I'm still not getting it. SOME speaker company SOMEWHERE just HAS to take a chance on either selling a speaker for more money with good parts, or putting good parts inside and making less money per pair but selling more speakers because of the quality. I mean c'mon...video after video ripping all of these speakers because of their "cheesy" parts. And I have to say I am very disappointed in Focal. 849 dollars for a speaker upgrade that you are trusting to be better based on a guy who is selling the upgrade, you can't listen to it before hand like you can in a shop or even buying on the used market. What equipment is used to measure these 'upgrades'? Why no lower than 200hz on the frequency chart? Look guys, he is a salesman trying to sell you the latest and greatest which is no different from every manufacturer out there, yes you can argue it may sound better based on some dodgy graphs but don't be fooled into thinking a 3/4/5 hundred dollar speaker is going to sound like 1/2 thousand dollar speaker with a few hundred on upgrades.
