    Keep it up man! Keep at it and find a new limit every ride. I'm that weird guy! Fixed gear all winter, every winter! Fixed gear offroad is more fun than should be legal. 30-40 miles in hills, dirt and singletrack is a pretty routine ride for me. Coolest thing about fixed gear in hills is the almost constant interval training. I ride fixed gear centuries over mixed terrain once or twice a year. Sometimes miles or just metric if I'm lazy. Its a wicked challenge and lots of fun. I usually try to stay off my feet and find an excuse to sleep most of the next day. I'm also 60 years young!

    When I started riding on the road, I only had my Colossi track bike. Did 5-8h a week on this thing. Then I got Dolan Pre Cursa. Did my first 100km ride on it. Trained my sprints, did strava segments etc. Raced my first fixie crit, also went to the velodrome. And it was my only bike, so I rode it to work every day, even in winter. Later I got different track bikes and even did group rides with them. Finding good gear ratio helps. Also you can carry bottle in your jersey pockets or can attach bottle cage with hose clamps

    I bought a track bike because I was interested to own a bike that I can use legs to brake. Later I learned what I really wanted was a bike with coaster brake. So I did end up getting a coaster brake bike and prefer it over fixed gear. I discreetly wanted a road bike too so I converted my track bike to a road bike. It's quite easy just flip the wheel to the freewheel side if your bike came with one. install brakes, switch to 23mm to 28mm tires and switch to drop bar if you don't have one. Thing is, I already have a 700C single speed so I took the conversion to another level and removed the track cog and installed a freewheel in it's place. Currently it has two different freewheels on the rear wheel which means two different hub sounds and teeth. Thus my track bike is my double speed road bike, one gear for flats and one gear for climbing. I still have my track cogs for when I do want to go back to fixed gear mode.

I have a road bike I can average(solo) about 18mph, 20 if I'm putting in some work, 22mph is what I can burst for short periods. I was looking at a fixie or something more road friendly I can just jump on and ride to exercise, w/o the need to put on bike shorts, a jersey and all the other crap. It's fine for a group ride, just feels kind of weird to wear solo lol.

    Riding fixed with a 40x18 fixed gear I use to maintain 16-20 mph on a 30mi ride, that is comfortably the B/BB group, so yes. Another alternative is to have a flip flop hub and have a different gear ratio as a single speed for the group rides. I had mine set up with 42x16 for group rides with my faster friends (I used a double chaining front crank, and a 5 speed freewheel converted to a two speed to keep the chain lines when fixed or when using the freewheel centered). I wouldn't say it replaces a multi geared road bike but you can use it and it is fun. This of course is if you have the legs and conditioning. By me the bike clubs say the difference groups (pace/speed) that will be lead in each group ride so if you are slower you can go with D or C group if available.

    And if you want the simplicity without the fixed gear, get one with a flip flop hub and ride as single speed. I got rid of my geared bike and kept my fixie. Ride as a SS. Even turned my cheaper hard tail into a single speed that I urban ride with. It’s not nearly as quick or easy as my fixie, but I don’t have to worry about going up curbs or down stairs. Single speed/fixies are just so fun and simple. And you can tinker with them without really screwing them up.

    I'm interested to know what the difference would be like having a single speed freehub vs a fixed gear. Thinking of the physics of a direct drive, I'm assuming the freehub would be less efficient?

  • @woutervanderdoes5163

    @woutervanderdoes5163

    2 жыл бұрын

    My guess would be the difference is negligible, depending on the internal friction in the single speed freewheel. When pedalling (i.e. the freehub is engaged), it's basically the same. Two cogs and a chain. The rear cog is basically connected directly to the rear wheel. The drivetrain efficiency gains of a fixie vs road bike comes from the lack of derailleur. When you are comparing coasting on a freehub vs soft pedalling on a fixed gear, I'm not sure which is more efficient. In the one case you have additional friction in the freehub, in the other you have additional friction from the chain and cogs. My best guess is that this difference is insignificant. The freehub will have to engage: this will cause some inefficiency when you go from coasting to pedalling, but assuming you pedal most of the time (I mean, it's a bike ;p) this will also be negligible. If you are riding a brakeless fixie, that will almost surely be less efficient than a singlespeed. Braking will not only be a loss of kinetic energy, you have to also expend energy to slow down by applying force backwards. The difference is not really there when riding a velodrome or perfectly straight line, but once you have to slow down for some turns this is a significant factor. The point of a fixed gear bike over a singlespeed, I think, is mostly feeling, challenge and cool factor. I might add that I ride my flip-flop hub more on the fixed side than the freehub side. ;)

    One other thing a fixed gear gains is the benefit of inertia. Each pedal stoke pushes into the next one you do not get this effect when using a freewheel or freehub. At least for me this results in me riding faster for longer as I feel like the bike is pushing me to keep pedaling faster or to maintain the pace. I feel that even if I don't plan to coast if the bike has a freewheel I end up coasting at more times than I really need to. Now a freewheel is better for longer rides since you can coast if you are tired. I use a flip-flop hub on my Fixed/SS bike, I mainly ride fixed but if I find myself over tried from a long or hard ride I just use the freewheel side so I don't hurt my knees or get in an accident. I don't ride brakeless. Coasting also does loose more power due to the friction in the freewheel mechanism but this is offset by the power you are not expending pedaling so I think it cancels each other out in that regard.

  • @joelogjam9163

    @joelogjam9163

    2 жыл бұрын

    I use to assume that there would be no difference between pedalling with the freewheel engaged and fixed, until I actually rode a fixed gear and realised that with a freewheel you lose the "push on" effect that you get with fixed. With a freewheel it feels like you're fighting at each power stroke, whereas with fixed you get a seamless surge that feels more like you're building on the power that you've already put into the bike's momentum - like a flywheel effect. So, at least in situations where you can utilise that "flywheel" effect, I'm confident that fixed would be more efficient than a singlespeed freewheel setup.

    @@woutervanderdoes5163 Speaking of turns, you have to be careful with pedal strike on fixed gear vs flying around turns on a freewheel. I ride this twisting road near my house and I try pedaling through some of the switchback turns and get scared to lean too much because of pedal strike. I find if I build up momentum, I feel more confident lowering my outside pedal and leaning into the turn, then hitting the pedals again at the apex as I start to exit. To each their own though.

    Mind boggling alright! My favorite quote from the sci fi novel , Dune: "Fear is the mind killer". Riding harder, suffering and exceeding one's preconceived limits are accomplished by at least 50% mental strength. I find it ironic when so many folks write off fixing or SS as stupid when they've never even tried. I can't is a bad attitude. Think do or don't.

    I suppose to each his own as far as law enforcement is concerned. They don't seem to give much of a shit. until 'accidents' happen. I often ride fixed gear offroad. I use brakes out of respect for natural laws, responsibility to myself, my family and the humans near me where I ride. As far as I'm concerned, no brakes, no brains. But Common sense aint so common. People need to be held responsible for their freakin actions. Just hope I'm not around when innocent bystanders get mowed down. Ive seen this in San Francisco and later testified in court. I'd do it again too. Hundreds of people breaking rules wasn't worth the people I saw leave in an ambulance. Brakeless idiots don't get into 'accidents'. It's called assault, wreckless endangerment or manslaughter caused by negligence and ignorance. I'm not patient nor give a shit regarding vane thoughtless idiots who make responsible riders appear all bad. Commuters on bikes have it difficult enough. Here's the simple well proven facts: Existing laws for vehicles using brakes appear to be (not so) common sense, yet they're rarely enforced in my city as far as I know. The LAWS of motion, gravity and inertia cannot be broken! THEY WILL BREAK YOU! Maybe the problem is with the education system. Haha. I don't care how skilled a rider might be, SHIT HAPPENS. A skidding wheel is not in control. Everyone needs to maintain control of their vehicles. Any bike can have brakes that are rarely touched.
