Can a ferrite choke cure awful computer audio? No ... but two can!!

Музыка

I had been putting up with crap computer audio for years. I found heuristics that sort of helped but finally took the trouble to do.some R & D. I call out two very helpful videos during the video - and these work.
Turns out the shielded USB cables are not my friends. I need to turn to the older Epson camera cables ... with the ferrite cylinder around them.
And the whole chain needs to attenuate the high pitched digitally induced noise.
Now I have a joy and peace inside of me - I can concentrate on learning my bass parts with a decent sub woofer.
these beads can be added on to existing cables. sometimes you need to loop the cable through the beads. See the videos referenced in my video.
enjoy and peace be with you all. ✌

Getting cable spaghetti PTSD watching this. Man, I’m so much happier with a minimalist setup. Those ferrite bead cylinders do work, a bag of several is pretty cheap too.

Great idea. I'm going to go dig into my box of cables. I purchased two ground loop isolators to deal with this type of noise and really didn't think about the quality of the USB cable and the ferrite choke until I decided to search for using ferrite chokes on USB cables just now!

Nice. As you can see I did the same so these aren't my ideas :-). But for me it worked. So much so I got me a 5.1 system for the old music PC.

@@stephenhookings1985 I've known about this, but just didn't put any weight on it being useful for my PC setup. I just ordered a 60-pack of ferrite chokes from Amazon! I've been having pretty horrible issues with docking my work laptop.

I made another short video. Not sure if you saw it. I had a clear out in the garage and reset my PC. Darned noise came back even with the Ferrites. Am I full of s**t (I wondered). No ... but all the kit connected to the hub also needs to have them and/or be grounded. The Zoom R16 was causing a lot of grief. But I got it all quiet again - that is plenty of signal and very little noise!

That is the intention - for me it was other theatres! Somehow I really like having gear precariously sat onto of more gear or junk - the fragility of the situation seems to filter out a series of harmful brain waves. Gets the creativity machine in action. But I did tidy my other workbench recently - experimenting with more orderly workspace. I think it is overrated - but has some benefits. Didn't you like the under desk better? Clandestine crap under there. Still - those beads sure improved the tone!

LMAO, I have lots of junk but my work desk is fairly clear since I need to work every day. Now my basement workbench is a different story.

Hi, one question. My audi interface is powered by 12v power supply, and doesn't have ferrite on it. It's connect to the computer with USB Type C, without ferrite too. It's safe to put ferrite on USB and on the power supply? Seems to be a ground noise because when i touch any part of the guitar that has metal the noise disapear. Thanks in advance!

Many PS come with ferrite beads on then for this very reason. Whether it's safe on your particular one I can't say but provided it is installed properly it is worth a go. They are often detachable.

Did you get that noise on your recordings too before putting the ferrite cable in? Or was it just when playing back audio? Thanks.

I record into the Zoom R16 from an analog mixer - so I am not sure I ever used the Creative Labs as an input. So you can hear it was definitely during audio playback - my guess is IF I recorded that into the Zoom then likely the noise would have been present. And likely the Zoom would have recorded it? Simply to say I no longer hear it :-)

Damn… you are obviously going to get a bad sound with all those cables messed up all over the room and table like that it is a mess my man…

Sure. I just love mess - but that isn't the reason for the previously bad sound. No matter how neat the cables are you will get mess from a PC data link without some form of ferrite.

Me think the old cable or sound card has a grounding issue there somewhere.

The high frequency data along the USB induces the noise - a bit like picking up mobile phone beeps. Agreed that a shield cable that was grounded should reduce noise. But it doesn't stop all forms of noise.

If it sounds like the higher pitch noise I had on this video then maybe. They are white cheap to retrofit or see if you can get some ready made cables - they are also cheap. Majority of original USB cables came with the ferrite - I guess they were removed in USB2/3 for data cables.

w2aew are his HAM call letters :D He's a good guy, explains a lot of stuff like ferrites and other things. It is truly remarkable just how much we don't know out there; everyday I learn something new and get reminded of just how much I haven't got a clue about. :)
