Can a Christian Be Rich?

According to the Catholic Church, private property is a natural right of each person, necessary for human flourishing. But this right is neither absolute nor untouchable: this is a limit to how much one can own as a Christian. What limits does the Church place and what happens if they are broken?

@Kade Daivis "Thus says The Lord: Blessed is that servant of Mine who seeks out the poor, whose heart is eager to help the needy, for they know My ways and seek to please Me. Blessed also is My servant who gives out of the abundance they have received, for they walk in My ways. Yet most blessed is My servant who gives from their lack, for they do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with their God; indeed, they have understood. Yet woe to those who ignore the poor and draw back their hand from the needy, while they sit at ease in their abundance. For destitution is coming, and shall be born out of great desolation, in the day I take away their abundance and leave their houses desolate. Woe also to those who say they are My servants, yet refuse to help those in need, for only tears and sorrow await them. And woe to those who fail to give even the smallest amount, claiming they are in lack, for they have no trust, having learned nothing from the poor widow.[1] Little flock, have you learned nothing from My Word? Have you so quickly forgotten My Letters, in where I have taught you the way in which you should walk? Indeed, who you choose defines what you do, as I have already told you.[2] And who are the poor and the needy? How have you treated them, while entreating Me? Do not lie to yourselves, beloved ones. Every one of you who sit at this table want for nothing. Shall you mince words over a dollar, while others sit upon the ground seeking to draw water from a pit? Shall you covet five dollars or even ten as you drive about in your automobiles, while your brothers and sisters abroad willingly walk miles to preach My Word, with joy, even to their dying breath? And still some of you sit at ease in your padded chairs, punching the keys, saying within yourselves, “I am delivered.” You are not delivered! From the power of sin, yes, My children, I have delivered you, yet some of you remain married to this world. And those who remain married to another, even to themselves, can by no means be joined unto Me, lest adultery be brought into the house of The Lord. Beloved ones, you are My treasure. Yet some of you count yourselves as first, having loved another more than Me; therefore you must be last. For I search the hearts and minds. And that discipline reserved for the churches of men, is it not also for you, even to a greater degree? Or have you forgotten this Scripture: For everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required; and to whom much has been committed, of him they will ask the more? Therefore choose, make your decision... It is time... Says The Lord." From His Volumes of Truth.

@Kade Daivis Yeah, the issue with this mindset is that it's based off the assumption that you're not worthy. The whole idea of giving little of what you have is very present in Christianity. In rural areas it's common for members of the community to help each other out during times of need. You're also too focused on the word "given". The phrasing in this sense is that our Earthly possessions are truly Gods, and they are placed here for us and we may take as we give. Applying politics to church isn't going to help you understand church at all, some of the words and phrases have different meanings within religious communities. No one is saying you don't deserve what you've earned, but what they are saying is that there are others who may not be able to get where you are, or maybe they aren't there yet. By helping others out of ditches, we raise up each other. I don't have much, but I always try and help out where I can and when I can.

Yeah, I tend to lean more conservative lately, but in the end it's all about voting how Jesus would want us to vote... and sadly, the left party is worse than the right party at the moment. But we shouldn't make the right party an idol either..... because they also aren't perfect. If one studies the bible, catechism, and history etc... you'll know what Jesus commands and what is totally against God completely.

The parable of talents sums it up nicely: everything ultimately belongs to God, and each person is entrusted a portion of it to make it fructify and then give back to God, which means to accomplish His will in taking care of those in need. It is a good thing to become rich, and it is legitimate to enjoy that money to some extent as a salary, but in the end you are only a servant, you cannot appropriate those riches for your only benefit, that is in a sense theft - their purpose is God's, and God wants to take care of all. Not sharing our wealth and helping others means actively depriving them of the relief and help that God intended for them to receive.

In your last sentence, are you saying that the wealth is the relief God intended? I thought it was the Gospel and the salvation. Does it not sound like you place too much importance on money? I don't know where you live, perhaps there are starving poor Christians there. But I live in the USA where many poor people are overweight, own cars, have iPhones, spend government assistance on drugs and alcohol. They are not the poor of Biblical times. They are in poverty alright, spiritual poverty, not financial. Poverty of the mind and soul. I can give them everything I own and they will stay poor. You can take everything away from me and I will return to my level of wealth in a short time. In the late 1980s and early 1990s I lived in Russia. The Soviet Union was collapsing. My family and I lived through a man-made catastrophe, empty markets, pitiful food rations, the rise of gans, subsistence farming, government (our only employer) not paying workers for up to six months and when I was in college my husband, my 2 year old child and I nearly starved. I look back now and thank God for those days. I am glad no one gave us their charity. Those tough times showed me who was who, what they were made of and what I was made of. And the main problem was spiritual poverty, Godlessness. From it stemmed all poverty. It was entirely self inflicted. I would even say it was God's punishment for the atrocities of Soviet generations. All the wealth in the world wouldn't alleviate this poverty and no government policies would help either. In the US alleviating poverty is entirely up to an individual. "Man shall not live by bread along."

@@BreakingInTheHabit Having wealth is a sign of virtue and efficiency. How was that wealth created? By providing goods and services that people voluntarily buy, in the free market. If people buy stuff from you, that means you have a product that people demand, and are willing to pay for it for a just price. It's a win-win situation. If you REALLY want to look after others, then produce and sell them the things they demand! This way jobs are created, society as a whole gets richer, poverty reduces, people live longer lives.

@@BreakingInTheHabit Wealth is ALWAYS created by someone, at some point in time. You inherit it from someone that created it, you steal from someone who created it (btw, this is a crime). Without this initial creation of wealth, charities would have nothing to distribute. In the developed world, it’s easy to forget that poverty is the default state of human existence. Wealth is not found in nature; it must be created, and this is precisely the role of businesses and entrepreneurs. They are the force which takes us out of the state of nature. All cases of poverty have the same solution - not wealth distribution, but wealth creation. The only "natural" course for man to survive and to attain wealth, therefore, is by using his mind and energy to engage in the production-and-exchange process. He does this, first, by finding natural resources, and then by transforming them … to make them his individual property, and then by exchanging this property for the similarly obtained property of others. Any attempt to equalize people by redistributing wealth must result in a destruction of capital and of the ability to create jobs and prosperity, and thus reduced incomes.

  • @andresd3104

    4 жыл бұрын

@@BreakingInTheHabit Redistributing wealth from the rich to the poor only reduces the wealth of both groups, but particularly of the poor. Every country that has ever made a serious attempt to equalize its citizens has gone to ruin, because forced equality reduces the incentive the rich have to invest capital and instead encourages the consumption of it, since it is likely to be taken from them. Additionally, as more and more people choose to become receivers instead of givers, there is not enough wealth being created by those who produce to support both themselves and the rest of society. The system breaks down and poverty for all arises.

The biggest problem I see here is the idea that modern states and governments are unions of people that serve the common good. But it's not the case anymore, decades of history tell us that the state serves nothing else but its own interests, and we as Christians can't actually rely on governments when it comes to supporting those in need. This idea is not mainstream yet, but it will become one, sooner or later.

Not religious but I used to volunteer at a Catholic thrift shop. The biggest part of my job was unfortunately throwing stuff out. There is a lot of stuff people don't use that other people can't use either. I'm not sure if there has ever been a time in history before where things become useless so fast. I think large corporations have a responsibility to build technology that is interoperable with other technology and lasts longer and can be fixed. Imagine if the Dead Sea Scrolls had been saved on technology we use today. Already it's nearly impossible to read floppy disks from 30 years ago. Hard drives will fail. I doubt iCloud or whatever you use will be here 100 years from now. Gifting an old computer can be more of a burden than a gift. Unfortunately now wastefulness is built into the system and the nature of products we use as amazing as some of them can be-but all of them could be more upgradeable.

For example: Am I poor if I am the only one who deesn't have an iphone in my class or haven't traveled the world in my social group? Am I rich because I have abundance of food, clothes, a decent house? Envy is great temptation in the western world - it is easy to feel poor when we watch our neughbours or media influencers having more then we have. At the same time, we have much more then any other generations that has lived before.

Redistribution through a welfare state is far different from what the Social Doctrine of the Church would look like. For starters, everyone should have a piece of land (agrarian reform), just like pre-industrial society. That alone would allow people to be much more autonomous than most of the common people are. Welfare state creates dependence because it’s not truly charitable. I’d recommend you try and go learn about Distributism from Chesterton.

When we were farmers, you still work very hard for your money, yet you also get the sense of fulfillment knowing that your hardwork gives people life, gives people their food, keeps them healthy and happy. Meanwhile nowadays it's not so clear anymore. Most probably, the work you do now only makes other people more rich. If that other people (your boss, your CEO, etc) is generous and helps people often, then you somewhat can still get the fulfillment, but if not then......

I think this is one along with work, sloth (laziness), greed are some of the key points that must be put together in order to understand material poverty and charity. For instance work fatigue is a curse caused by the original sin however I belive everyone capable of working only needs an opportunity and a fair salary wage to work it's way out of poverty and labor can become a way to sanctify our lives, for instance Saint Joseph was a carpenter and Jesus was probably a carpenter in his youth too he only began to depend on charity when he started his public life. There is people who have certain degree of material wealth that believe that only becoming wealthier can havr the means to help more people and in the other hand I know people who think wealthier people have the obligation to help them and they become conformist saying that God wants them to be poor (literaly) and they can't do anything about it and there is a lot more when you take this to the level of the economic system.... I know that Saint Francis was a remarkable example of material austerity devoted to spiritual wealth and an excellent example of charity model but I still try to understand the trust he put in God when it comes to material needs... one of my favourite saints.

But.. how should one determine what is excessive? What if i like and love lets say unique art & design pieces that cost from 5 000 to 300 000 $ and I buy just few of them. A bed, few chairs, closet etc. Some basics for one apartment or small house. It would cost millions of $, so can i do that? Is it ok to aim for it? And after I die to give it all to museums etc. for future public good. Is such scenario sinful? Excessive or fine? Or in general any kind of wealth is ok as long as its prominent part is shared and used for public good?? 🙏 Thank you for your help. I work in luxury sector and I have a lot of ambition in life, but i am limiting myself because of this confusion. I fear i'll go to hell, but limitations are also suffering, unused Gods given talent i dont think is good to be let to rot?¿ Thanks for the help ❤️‍🔥🙏

Ben Tabucan That’s right, but why is it almost impossible? The New Testament has a bit more to say about wealth that “just don’t be greedy with it”. Its pretty obvious in this case that our attempts to make the New Testament say less than it does, is simply a consequence of us liking our comfortable, middle class lives in a wealthy society. It’s something I as a Christian constantly struggle with.

The idea of tithing in this way is actually a fairly common Protestant Practice, not Catholic. There's obviously nothing wrong with it (it's biblical!) and is actually a great practice to get in the habit of, but there is no official teaching of the Church requiring it. I think it is a great practice for some, but I also worry that, for the very wealthy, it may be an excuse to do what they want with the rest of it. Some might need to give more than 10%. Others less. In short, it's a good starting point, but it may have to be adjusted based on one's situation.

And for the common catholic, this would be something totally foreign to the watered down Catechisis that they received. Exactly! My only quibble would be that you don't distinguish between the different ways the term "socialism" is used. Not all groups who call themselves Socialist aspire to, mirror, or even approve of Soviet communism. Some groups who claim socialist ideals are actually promoting exactly the type of social structure you describe - one where there is private property, people are allowed to accrue wealth, but there is regulation on unfettered profit that comes at the detriment of the community as a whole. I do wish there had been a more nuanced address of the term "socialism" in the video, but I do understand it's hard to get into nuance in a KZread video.

In addition to what Fr. Casey said, consider your motivation for purchasing this crucifix, versus, say, a more plain one: are you buying it from a sense of vanity, or as a status symbol? Or are you buying it because it is beautiful? Beauty can remind us of the infinite goodness of Christ. It may be imprudent to buy it if you know that you struggle with pride or vanity, but if you truly appreciate its beauty, which is appropriate in honoring God, then it's probably ok for you (as long as it's not financially imprudent).

But the issue was that he had more than enough but didn’t bother to help Lazarus. God didn’t give us riches so we could hoard it for ourselves but instead so that we could become a force of good, helping the poor and the needy. It is not enough to thank God and live his people crying for daily bread.

It discusses the nature and proper use of money and property, from a Catholic perspective. He was also one of the first to argue that the "prince" (i.e. the government) didn't have the right to all property, but that individuals had a right to private property of their own.

After reading Rerum Novarum I can conclude that he doesn't actually engage with socialist arguments but only caricatures of these arguments. (I will present the Marxist argument, because I'm most familiar with them, and that at the time they were among the biggest socialist movements.) Most important is that the distinction between personal and private property. Socialists in their denial of the right of private property hold up the right of personal property. And that even though he recognizes the labour theory of value (see quote 1), he doesn't engage in the Marxist argument based on that; quickly summarised it is that the value added to a product is far greater than what the workers is paid resulting in the owners living off of other people's work and not just his own. In chapter 7, Leo expresses that the socialist society would deprive man of control over his own life and work. The socialist would say that class society has already done that, in not only limiting social mobility, but even in the workplace it is a dictatorship by those who own, and power is not in the hands of those who work, therefore the worker loses control over his own life as he can't actually choose how the work should be organized. The socialist wants a democratic workplace where the worker regains control over his working life. In chapter 8, he clearly misrepresents the socialist position. Socialist do believe that man should live off of his own work, but that most work has been socialized; most work is now done by many people in cooperation, e.g. factory work. If most work is done by many then those many should be entitled to its labor and not just the owner of the factory, but in the instance that work is done by few, then those few should prosper by it, and that is also what was done with peasant cooperatives. His coclusion (quote 2) is exactly the same conclusion of socialists; socialist just believe that it currently isn't the case. In chapter 14, he also misrepresents socialists. Socialist do not want an abolition of the family, but want an abolition of the capitalist family. Socialist want a family that is based on money, but on love. Socialists want a family where the women and children are not exploited by the man, but a family where all members of the family live free of exploitation from another. Socialists do not want to establish a community of women in common, but want to abolish it, for what is prostitution, if not a women in common? Socialists want to stop women from being tied to a man that they do not love out of an economic need, and through this stop the golddigging wife from cheating, for she would never marry a person she didn't love. In chapter 17, he also expresses the misconception that under socialism all wages would be the same, but that is untrue. Under capitalism many are paid a fixed wage wether they work hard or not. Socialists subscribe to "From each according to his ability, to each according to his labour." and under the early Soviet Union most wages, where it was possible, were actually determined by how much you worked, in which it was possible. And one of the most common criticisms of Socialists in Rerum Novarum is that socialists are just envious of the rich, and that is not necessarily true, some are but it isn't inherent to socialist thought. Marxist ethics, specifically, is mostly based on freedom and the right of each man to enjoy their own labour. Quote 1: "...it may truly be said that all human subsistence is derived either from labor on one's own land, or from some toil..." Quote 2: "the results of labor should belong to those who have bestowed their labor. "

I've had this conversation alot in my 30 yrs of life. Now I'm sober 6 yrs from herion. Thank God and found my belief in God about 10 yrs ago. And it's gotten stronger since I got sober and back on track. Now that said. I think that the rich people who don't help anyone and are just selfish etc. Are sinning imo. When your rich you should be helping pur fellow brothers and sisters out. There's no reason that we got millionaire billionaires etc sleeping in mansions with anything they wish. While the person up the road could be homeless starving and sleeping on concrete right now. So I believe one who's rich should want to spread the wealth. If you believe in God? And get wealthy? Then I would hope that you believe that God has given you this wealth to share with others? That's one thing I hate to see. Like when rappers and rich people will say thank God for them becoming successful and rich when they are making there money off sin. SMH some believe that rapping about the things they do and got rich from are because God gave them this?? Its crazy asf to believe that. I'll stop here because I can type a essay on this lol.

A very difficult subject presented well in just a few minutes. The obvious problem however is not a theological one but a historical one. Best seen in the idea of Slavery for example, where people were turned into property and for many generations and even supported by Biblical appreciation! The problem is what do we mean by Property? Today we may - at least in the richer wealthier Western World - imagine we can purchase items freely such as a supermarket. The problem is that often exploitation of poor communities and individuals has taken place to satisfy our demands for these commodities. Coffee and Tea are obvious examples of what can amount to robbery of resources in a weaker economic world. Often famine may result and our responsibility is not as clear as we may hope. As if matters were not muddied enough by such problems we have the testament of Jesus and others in the New Testament. The simple implication is that we cannot have money "that tainted thing" and belong to God as we hope. St Francis of Assisi famous renouncing of worldly goods is a follow up and if we look upon the Temptation that Money gives us. .and hear the warning of St Paul that the love of that tainted thing is the very root of evil (in the golden cow idolatry etc) then the answer to being a Christian and being rich seems incompatible. Fortunately, we can, as the Church often points out .. . not always have too much of anything or it is almost impossible to compare because social standing etc demand various degrees of material wealth. Kings and subjects will always differ. Nonetheless, you are correct to warn that nobody, king or subject can do what they like; rather as brothers and sisters we have a duty to see the person of Jesus in our neighbour. This is demanded of us in Scripture and will certainly have resonance as to our salvation or damnation. The question posed is therefore for more serious than simple rhetoric and we must as Christians try to ask for guidance on its various, though often foggy implications.

No socialist that I know of wanted to abolish private property (some might name Stirner but his case is actually more complicated than it might seem at the service), in fact, one of the things Lenin disliked about capitalism was how most of the workers and farmers receive very little of it. One of the central tenants of Leninism, sometimes thought to be the only attribute differentiating it from other forms of scientific socialism, was its enthusiastic embrace of the agriculturalist cause, including guaranteeing ownership of land to farmers through land reform. The Communist Manifesto names opposition to private property as a common misconception about Social Democracy. Neither do Proudhonians oppose private property.

Could you do a video explainer of St. John Henry Newman's explanation of the development of doctrine, maybe citing some well-known and lesser-known examples of doctrinal development along the way? Or, if you dare, apply the idea of doctrinal development to controversial debates of our day? Many such arguments when discussed by non-theologian Catholics seem framed by the presumptions of secular liberal progressivism more so than by sound Catholic theology and catechesis. I would welcome someone of your style to address these questions so that we as a Church can understand these debates on our own terms, not the secular world's.

Yes it is biblical what you said. And also the Bible teaches the Lord Jesus once told a Young Rich Man that in order to enter the Kingdom of Heaven he was to sell all he had and give to the poor and then to pick up his cross and follow Him_ (Christ) I believe perhaps what Jesus was telling this man was that he probably had more than he needed so he was to sell the things he had already accumulated and with that money give to the poor and then he was to die to himself in order to follow Christ_ like being crucified with Christ yet you're alive but the life that you now are living you live by the faith of the Son of God_ And also This Way dying to yourself you rely completely on God and with what God gives you each day for what you need. I myself I am not rich and I probably will never own a property but I know God supplies all my needs, He doesn't always give me what I want but He always gives me what I need. Still the most important thing from all of this is that we are Rich if we belong to Christ as a born again Christian You have eternal life🤗 what better riches than that to have eternal life with Christ and throughout eternity future Worlds Without End. And So we are not to hoard this richly and wonderful amazing and unspeakable gift of salvation, but instead we are to share it with everyone that comes in our path and we are to share the gospel to all our family members and to everyone else, even as Jesus said that we are to preach to All Creatures, we are not given from Christ this amazing gift of salvation to hide and bury this gift Underground, but instead make it prosper_ because the gospel of Christ is the power of God unto salvation to everyone who believes.

The Indian guys at her bed and breakfast couldn’t see she was rich person. The moms was put out. It was all amusing. Moms, brothers all dressed like college students. Indians were not impressed. They were in fact annoyed these average folks acted uppity.

It's okay to make a lot of money... depending on how you make it. There are plenty of ways of making money that do not uphold the dignity of the human person (slave labor, abuse, unfair wages, poor working conditions, etc.)

Father, do note that the redistribution you outline is more closely related to socialism. When you describe having to turn everything over to the government you describe communism, not socialism.
