    I'm slowly unraveling the mystery of psychopathy, (father), in my family of origin & why, (even though I'm not a psychopath), the lack of conscience is/was present in 2 siblings & my eldest, (now adult), offspring. All those years figuratively fluctuating between trying to understand & pulling my hair out wouldn't have changed a thing. They were going to do what they were going to do, regardless. Thank you for sharing your wisdom and insight.

    Fairly obviously there's a structure to someone's psyche that will always end in them having psychopathic traits but it's the "perfect storm" of events in their life that structures the resulting "serial killer" conclusion and the degrees of other ones. Dave Pelzer is the best example of someone who "should've" turned out like that if you're basing it on learning, but didn't.

    I think ethically it's hard to say there are psychopathic children - but I think it's a bit naive to say there are none and there's never been a psychopathic child. Lots of children probably do exhibit anti-social behaviour, but in many it's symptoms of other things, and the behaviours can be treated. I don't believe that is the case with every child though.

    Children of NPD or BPD parents can become psychopaths or sociopaths eventually. Specifically where severe and toxic parental alienation is going on, they learn early in life how to get what they want from the good and caring parent by scaring them with various overt and very toxic and covert threats. This is an early taste of power to them and they start building up from there. Sad this goes unnoticed.

    They can have Callous and unemotional traits. But so far I know 50% of those children turn out "normal" in the end and just the other 50% get psychopaths when they grow up. So you don't call children psychopath, because those traits still can outgrow.

  • @BourneAccident

    Yes, a child can have a psychopathic nature. In fact, it's common. All you have to do is observe school yard behavior and you will clearly see a lack of empathy in many children. Most outgrow it and mature, but many don't and become the psychopaths we encounter everyday.

    It's a defect in the brain. It's a problem with the connection in the brain from the frontal lobe to the amygdala. They simply experience empathy love and emotions different from the normal (to standards) human being. So the big debate is can they help it or is it something natural. If it is a natural thing can they be held responsible in the sense they cannot help there natural instincts the same way a crocodile cannot a crocodile only lives to kill eat and breed nothing more it's natural. It's estimated 1 in 200 people in the United States are Psychopaths and the majority of them are not serial killers or insane so this just shows how complex this issue is. And should not be held to the opinions and standards of uneducated individuals like a lot of the people on here in the comments.

    +StriperMc: Good info. I'd argue they can and *should* be held accountable when they hurt others. They may not "understand" on an emotional level, but they do in a cognitive way. From my understanding, they can (and often, albeit ultimately for *their* benefit) learn to mimic and behave in a social - or less anti-social - way. And after all, societies are upheld by rules and restraints that condemn inflicting pain. We all - excepting the mentally ill and small children - have to follow them or suffer the consequences, socially and/or legally.

    They are described as emotionally unstable. One child taken out of school at five for intense support happily caused harm to other children in a deliberate calculated manner. One occasion he bided his time & launched scolding tea over another child who said something to him he didn't like. He was sweet until things didn't go his way. He laughed after throwing the scolding drink. He would whisper things to other children they would explode in anger he watched the drama innocently. A child like this does exist, you cannot correct the disorder you can one manage them with strict rules, punishment has no effect, you train them to avoid punishment is all.

Scientist will probably find eventually a treatment or drug that will mimic sympathy/compassion, same way they have found a treatment for bipolarity. But all psychopaths have no empathy or remorse, otherwise you just have an antisocial personality and you are not a psychopath. :)

They will get it wrong everytime Kids are stubborn. Some of them can't be reasoned with. Manipulative kids are sociopaths. And kids who tend to cry, even there is no physical abuse, might be psychos They never listen. But some words or tones of saying, might actually make them uneasy. They cry not because they're sad. What is wrong with these so called professionals? They can have all the traits as children but shouldn't be diagnosed til they're adults??? That doesn't even make any logical sense to me! Lets wait until they get a chance to do something serious and end up in jail where they are forced to be diagnosed because there is no way an actual psychopath is going to seek help and say they have a problem. And when they are adults what can anyone possibly do to help them even though they wouldn't want help because they'd think there's something wrong with us not with them

  • @runbabyrun05

    @runbabyrun05

    I think the reason for that is that children are young enough to still go down a different route if those around them are able to recognize troubling behavior early on and make more of an effort to give them the help they need to grow up to be decent people. It's easier to make impactful changes in a child than an adult. I don't think the mindset necessarily changes completely, but it's more important that these kids are taught to not actually act on dangerous ideas - thinking one thing, acting is another. Even if they are indifferent about others, self-preservation will be a priority for a rational psychopath. It's important to realize though that not all psychopathic people are violent or even "bad", many are fully functional members of society. It all depends on how they use their traits to their advantage for good or bad.

    +Misael Pena it can be. Because people lack empathy and the traditional multidimensional emotions we have they have an outside perspective on emotion because they arent influenced by it. Because of this outside perspective they are able to manipulate these emotions for themselves because they are able to learn, study, and use them at will because they dont need to hide natural emotions that would otherwise give away someone who is normal. Psychopaths are intelligent but very self serving and one dimensional, because they lack empathy for others they are incapable of forming legitimate relationships with others and all that is left is to self serve as far as their purpose, and because they lack empathy they cannot help but manipulate and do bad things to prop themselves up because their only purpose is themselves, and its easier to simply ignore the roadblocks that empathy creates to self-serving, and therefore instead of following these rules that they dont really understand, why not just ignore them? That is why psychopaths are dangerous. Now of course like any mental disorder it is on a spectrum, however, some psychopaths may have a moral compass up to a certain point, for instance they will do anything except kill or rape or commit violent acts. These are the functioning psychopaths that may succeed in business or via other capacities. Only the full blown psychopaths are the killers, the rapists, etc.
