Can a Cheaper Rig Beat the TRX4 At Its Own Game? RGT EX86190

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

RGT Rescuer EX86190 review: It's here! ( asiate.es/aff?l=201678&i=76070 )
Also selling as the FTX Outback Tracker, the RGT Rescuer, a scale 1:10 model of the Toyota Landcruiser 76 series 'Workmate' has been released. It's a gorgeous model and it has all the trappings of a modern, full-fat RC crawler - lockers front and rear, 2-speed, wheel wells, full light kit, plush suspension, 6-channel radio, even mud flaps. What's not to like!
The Traxxas TRX4 led the charge with all these clever shifting gizmos back in mid-2017. Since then, others have been compared to the TRX4, but most fall short, at least on features. How does the RGT Rescuer fare in comparison? Tune in to find out!
This is Part 1, getting to know the EX86190.

Corrections:
1. The motor is a 20T 550, not the 17T 550 I reported in the video. Sorry about that!
2. Regarding the hood ornament: it is actually a scale feature! In some markets, Toyota released the LC76 with the little Toyota logo adorning the hood! I've not seen that before in Australia, but my comment about it not being a scale addition was misinformed. Just thought I'd let you know!
3. It may not be powdered cast gears after all. We've contacted RGT and await an update. More info here: rc-tnt.com/how-to/q-and-a/rgt...

    Good to see you brought Tully for the trail walk. And some nice talk stuff, there is always something I pick up I feel I can learn from. I've done a bit of 4wd driving but never something I really studied, so I don't know that much. I do love when a car gets to an obstacle and then see how it reacts, it amazes me each time. Cool video as usual, I enjoy watching your stuff!

    Thanks! Tully didn't get out far, this was all filmed around the house. But yep, she's ever present. Good dog, stays close even when we are in the bush. Good car, this, too. I'm going to use it a lot and am thinking I'll report back in a while with durability, longer term quirks and such, maybe an upgrade or two if needed. Cheers :)

    As always nice presentation of the features and your impression. 👍 I especially liked the observation about the gears and 2s. That is really helpful, with "small" technical notes like that about the trucks, that could save you some trouble (like the observation on the drivetrain in the Boom kit too in an earlier video). :) Keep it up. Oh, and I'm curious to see how it does on the problems. 👍

    I finally got myself one.!!! I'm absolutely delighted with it... Especially since I only paid £299 (£8:99 p&p) for it, they're currently on Banggood for £398 & the FTX Tracker version sells for around the same. Mine's the V2 version that has the interior fitted... The only problem is the gear shift servo was lazy, it hesitated when activated.. I'll let it off though, I've got spares & have already swapped it out. It arrived yesterday right in the middle of the worst snow storm we've had in the Scottish Highlands for years... To maiden it in 12 inches of snow or not.?? Hmmmmmm.??.. Yeah.!!... it got wet.!! 👍 👍 👍 😂 😂 😂 I got some epic slo-mo shots too.! I'm currently trying out different wheel & tyre combos.. I'm not a fan of the oversized ones it came with, besides.. No trail rig of mine is going to roll on plastic rims.!😉 I've just fitted a 20 tooth pinion to hopefully suit the 108mm tyres.. It's also quite a bit larger than I expected, it's almost as large as my 1/8 Absima (Yikong) Bronco.!! Yes indeed it's very impressive... Right... I'm off out with it again.! 😉 😉 😂 😂 Stay safe out there & best wishes from Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 🙏 ❤️ 📻 🕹️ 🔋 🚗 🚖 🚕 🚔 🚚 🚙 🚘 🚓 🚒 🚑 🚐 🚎 🚤 🚁 🛩️

    Aw thanks :) That's the WPL C24 you're talking about, right? Night and day difference, that motor upgrade was! Upgrades, hmm. Not yet, but if I want to crawl more seriously with it I'll investigate getting some brass on those front portal outers. Maybe better tires and heavier wheels - maybe - but doing that means a servo upgrade and voltage rejig as well, since the WP-1060 only outputs 5V/2A. I really like it as it is so for now, a little front brass would be the only change for capability I'd half consider. A light bar up top would look cool too, but for now, I'm just gonna drive this thing and get to know it some more. It's a bunch of fun!

    Man that's a good looking rig! This shows a ton of potential right out of the box and I also wonder if they offer some gear upgrades for strength. Maybe they're stronger than it seems since they're shipping with a pretty stout 550 motor? The lighting kit looks awesome and reminds me of the Traxxas 2021 Bronco lighting kit I put on mine in terms of completeness. I think that radio might be a DumboRC... or at least the aesthetics sure look like their 6 channel. Looking forward to part 2! 🙌

  • @RCTNT

    Heh, agreed on all counts. I mention the radio is a DumboRC X6 clone in my article on this truck. Well spotted. The 20-turn 550 Rescuer motor packs less punch than the Traxxas 17-turn Titan, but that's fine - it and the gearing are perfect for the vehicle. I reckon it'll be durable. How much is it? I think your 100% correct about running 2S. They last a long time & still have enough power for a 1:10 scale crawler. Brushless of course would be 3S. A good quality 2S lipo is definitely a nice option. My guess on the rock crawl test is going to be a not so good rating but I agree using it as a trail truck would be cool. It's great! The only thing I needed to address ^was the end point for the 2-speed servo. It was off a tad, but otherwise, no complaints. Still a super fun machine that's easy to recommend. GST is now paid at point of purchase, even from international sellers. Any place that sells it to Australians is subject to this mandate, so what you pay is all you pay, in theory. Atees definitely has this under control.

    One more note... the website also says it has "Double tube liquid negative pressure shock absorber"... in your experiences with this car, did you find any advantage/disadvantage/noticeable differences between these and other "normal" oil filled coilover shocks? The way it's described, it seems like it would be pretty good. But in practical application, is it? does it even make a difference that you can see or feel? I'm really curious.

  • @RCTNT

    @RCTNT

    2 жыл бұрын

    No difference found in this case. It would probably help in high cycle applications such as on a fast, bumpy track in a fast truck, such as a SCT of some kind. On a crawler, no. The standard configuration just needs to be adjustable, plush and consistent, which standard reservoir and coil over designs definitely already are.

    I tried to find anywhere that described exactly which type of powder metal process was used to make the gears in this drivetrain, and I just couldn't find anything. Is that because it's proprietary industrial secrets for how good they are, or because they don't want us to know how cheaply made they are? Lots of questions, no answers. It would be interesting to find out more about these gears and how they were made. The way it's worded does make it sound like a positive feature, which implies they're made with one of the better methods, but at this price point, we can't just accept that assumption. There are a number of modern powdered metal processes that are actually superior to other forms of manufacturing and are preferred in high-stress high-performance and/or mission critical applications (HIP comes to mind here), so without knowing which method was used, it's hard to gauge whether or not these are any good. I put a sintered steel gearset in the starter for my 1/10 AWD nitro buggy over a decade ago and have never had any issues with it. no chips, scratches, or breakages, and I've been particularly harsh to it. If these gears are made like that one, no problem. It wasn't cheap back then, and wasn't easy to find either, but it was worth every penny. If these are just a cheap cast powder process (I really hope that's not the case!), then yeah, your observations are spot on, and possibly somewhat optimistic, about their durability.

    @@RCTNT looking at the pictures you posted, those gears look remarkably good. In fact, they look an awful lot like the sintered gears in my starter. I think your assessment is right on the money. I looked at the Absima Sherpa online yesterday in reply to another comment on the part 2 video. It is similar, though I love Absima's hinged body and clever little steering assembly! I don't see these brands easily accessible in Australia so I'm not sure I'll be able to get my hands on one, but I'll have a poke around and see what I can find. Honestly they're all pretty good these days. The quality and design is good enough that even in a cheaper model, you get reasonable durability and capability out of the box. We're spoilt for choice!

Gears are pretty solid and the days of blowing diffs regularly are fading for these more premium rigs. Everything is pretty incredibly durable, honestly. Worst case, if you blow an axle somehow irreparably, TRX4 axles will fit with a little fiddling. Can't comment on gearing but it'd be close. It is great looking little truck especially in black, though the lighter colours looks a bit toy-ish. The faux engine and realistic gearbox look great but does the motor being high up make any noticeable difference to the centre of gravity? The light controller looks like a DumboRC receiver. and if you weren't aware, it is a DumboRC transmitter, which are a brilliant radio for the price. They have fantastic range, claimed 500 metres, which is not far off when I tested. You can also get with them proportional channels 5 and 6, great for winches and rear steering. There are a number of receivers available, some with a giro built in, some with light controls though they do take a little bit of working out on how to operate, eg you have to steer three times in succession to turn on the hazard lights, and I think it is four times for emergency lights if fitted, beware there is a delay. Can't wait to see it try your problems.

Also, my article on this question is a little old now, but still still steer you in the right direction: rc-tnt.com/manufacturer/multiple/what-is-the-best-rc-rock-crawler/ I might write a refresher article for this in next next couple of months. The Rescuer is more capable than the Challenger. You may find this helpful: kzread.info/dash/bejne/oqd6zM-vgsSYfcY.html Also the Emo AT4 is truly capable, you can get the same performance from the JT4, and they're a kit option as well - great options. Base Camp is a great performer. It's a bit older now but this article might be helpful too: rc-tnt.com/manufacturer/multiple/what-is-the-best-rc-rock-crawler/ Thankfully, models these days are really good - better than ever before! Any of the rigs you listed are capable and you'll get a great deal of enjoyment for them. The question of "crawlers: if you could only have one, which would it be?" is a tough one! I've thought about it a bunch. For adventure and trailing, it'd be a toss up between the Scx6 and the Emo AT4. For scale adventures, the BC8 is my favourite but the BRX01 gets the most use! For crawling oriented trailing, trx4 and trx6 are hard to beat, especially once upgraded. The TRX4 Sport kit build is great, too. Axial's entire range is capable and fun. Gmade diffs are a little weaker than the others but the GS02F is a pure performer. Element RC is making brilliant stuff. The new knightwalker looks like a brilliant option, for example. Spoiled for choice, we are!

I just don’t think I’ve seen someone say ‘hey this is how you make a $200~$400(or x amount) build’ but part of it is my lack of understanding. Do I need dig, do I need diff locks, do i need foc, do i need portals, do i need multiple speeds, etc Is the price difference just marketing, or a genuine difference in technology/quality. Thats why something so feature packed liked the rgt seems appealing especially for the price. But you stated it perfectly, there is no perfect rc. It is all preference. 3d printing is effort and it can enhance your rc fun - if you're into it. I am, but I'd understand if someone wasn't. You don't need anything for a crawler except locked axles, decent enough tires, a sturdy frame, good steering and a scale body if you're that way inclined. It sounds like you're interested in a good general use 1/10 model. Here's a list of recommendations that you can keep pretty stock and thoroughly enjoy: Scx10 III (any variant, incl. Base Camp) Trx4 (any variant, but plan to upgrade steering servo) Element Enduro (any variant, but Ecto leads on crawling performance.) Cross rc emo AT4/JT4 RTR or kit (see my article for recommended parts for a kit build) RGT Rescuer (Challenger is good but heavy) Redcat Gen 9 Redcat Gen 8 (but see my upgrade videos, as motor and steering leave something to be desired) RC4WD TF2 (not 3) - more scale, less capable Boom racing BRX01/BRX02 - very scale, very strong drive line That'll cover it. You're going to have a great time with any of the above, truly.

    Nah, I don't. If I'm rebuilding one, or after heavy water running (and obviously when building a kit), then yes: grease onto all gears except the spur & pinion. But for a crawler you'd probably get away without any grease for a good long time. They're not high-speed parts, generally, so heat isn't so big an enemy (from friction) as it would be in faster vehicles. But in short, diffs, gearbox and transfer case like grease, yes.

    I had loved this body when I saw it on the preview photos, although when I saw the portals it completely killed my buzz, as I'm a bit of a hardcore scale guy. I am sorry to say I will miss enjoying what it seems like a great package, overall! I think the Toyota logos in those pics where indication of them trying to license it, but at some point they must have decided otherwise (probably because of the price jump due to royalties). Yes the receiver and light box could be waterproofed, but overall looks like a solid trail Swiss knife! I was wondering, how stiff is the chassis. I gather the only part that isn't plastic would be the rails, but how well the structural design of the plastic parts is, would either make it a wet noodle, or a rock-hard chassis. I'm betting a bit more towards the noodle kind. I look forward to what part 2 brings and prove me wrong that, for what it is, it can really handle a bit of rock crawling!

    I can ignore the portals for a fun machine like this. Not if it was a scaler, but for a general purpose rig, yeah, don't care. Personal preference of course. Chassis is moderately rigid but there's some flex. Not a big deal for a car like this, honestly. Compare it to the Phoenix or whatever and chassis flexibility isn't what makes the difference, put it that way. Stiffer is better, but it's a minor thing overall.

  • @RCTNT

    @RCTNT

    Жыл бұрын

    Hmm, that's a good question. The diff lock mechanism is nearly identical between the two but I reckon the Traxxas two-speed mechanism is superior. The tires are definitely better on the Traxxas - but those Canyon Trail tires are some of the best crawler tires I've tested, period, so that's a pretty high bar for RGT. I've just installed the Pro Light Kit in the Bronco (see one of my recent Bronco videos, I'm doing an eye-wateringly expensive build series with it currently) and whilst that's better than the RGT version, the Rescuer includes the light kit with the car - instantly better value there. Motors and plastics are similar in quality throughout. As a Toyota man I am partial to the Rescuer from the body perspective, but that 2021 Bronco body is gorgeous, no doubt. The RGT servos are better and the ESC is definitely better in the RGT - my opinion here, based on the models I own and have run over the years (and remember, I have more than a few crawlers from most brands at this point). RGT gets a lot right on this machine. I like the radio better too, actually. There's greater after-market support for the Traxxas range - though the axles are quite similar and I suspect (must get around to testing this) that many axle weight products for the TRX4 will probably fit the Rescuer. Let's bottom-line it: - if you're on a tight budget and want one of these two models and don't want to have to upgrade light kit and steering servo, get the RGT. Bonus points if you prefer the body. - if you are prepared to save more to buy the Traxxas and are prepared to replace the servo when it fails (if you crawl with it beyond light and occasional rocks), get the TRX4. The tires are better, too - so good that I wouldn't recommend upgrading them until you wear them out. See my tire test series for the data supporting this claim. Bonus points if you prefer the Bronco body. A few thoughts for you :) Happy decision making, my friend!

I would note however that inflation is crazy, supply issues are plaguing logistics and manufacturing processes globally and the TRX4 plus a Pro lighting kit is still stupidly expensive. I'm doing a 2021 Bronco with light kit video series and man, was it expensive! But I'm sorry this has gone up, that's a shame, the above notwithstanding.

    @@RCTNT Its a real shame on this one, we were tipped off to wait for the FTX version in the UK so we did. Pretty much convinced these will go down the same road as the Absima Sherpa & Yucatan now, same senario, rebranded, the price near on doubled and now they are not selling. Awesome video tho and content, Thank you for your time and feedback 👍

    @@TheSweeney oh I see. Tomley does ftx but I haven't tracked down his videos on the equivalent one to the Rescuer yet, if he's done it. I'm sorry to hear that about the pricing. I've been watching the Sherpa and Yuktan with a view to buying and comparing but they've been too expensive. I'd been waiting to see if they'd come down in price before buying, but hearing this has gone up makes me wonder if they will come down at all. Guess there's no harm in waiting to see. Bummer!

    What kind of charger did you buy for it?

    I just used one of my regular balance chargers with it and made an xt60 to deans adapter to fit the battery they supplied. Honestly, any balance charger would be fine. If you don't have one yet, something like this is pretty nice: ToolkitRC M6D 500W 15A High Power DC Dual banggood.onelink.me/zMT7/j0h8ifqk But any would do as long as its a balance charger. Cheers

    How about availability of parts

    @RCTNT

    Which parts in particular? The main stuff people break is servos and motors, which are universal. Don't have to buy the same to fix that. But I've also just bought a bunch of parts for it for a future video and they were readily available. I'd expect you're generally going to be fine here.

    Firstly, I was wrong about the gears. The "powder coating" is a newer kind of manufacturing process and they're apparently very good. This car will handle 3S and brushless. I'm going to upgrade mine soon with all available RGT upgrades and we'll stick a bigger power system in it as well. I expect the gears will be comparable to what's in the TRX4, but we shall see how it goes with more power. Another great car that does all this and is a kit build is the Cross RC EMO AT4, for which I have a video review here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/n6N41sl8k6ewpMY.html

    Nice, thanks. I could be mistaken, but I've always thought that 70 series meant any 7X variant. Just like the 105 is a 100 series, for example. So when I said "70 series" I meant any 70 variant, including the 76 here. That all said, I've never actually had a 70 series before but grew up in a 60, then had an 80 and now have a 100. Toyota power! :D Edit. I just went and checked, as you had me wondering if I've been using incorrect terminology all these years! But nope, it looks like 70 series means all the 70-somethings, etc. Cheers!

    Is the receiver waterproof?

  • @RCTNT

    I don't think so, no. I waterproofed mine with a bag but next time I have the car on the workbench I think I'll apply conformal coating to the board - and then I'll check if that's been done already. Conformal coating is a clear substance that you paint on and it sets kinda like varnish, keeping the painted components protected from water ingress. It's how I usually do it these days.
