I live in Bath, which is not far from Bristol and people still thank bus drivers in this area, I think that Londoners don't do it because buses in London have a back door so you don't go past the driver

Bristol is reportedly to have been built on 7 hills (like Rome).Having been born in the city & lived here most of my life - it is certainly a hilly city ! A perfect demonstration of why I don't think Portway station should've been built: it doesn't save time even for a journey to the far side of the city centre, & it jeopardises the 15-minute interval between passing loops that's needed for a regular half-hourly suburban service.

I miss Bristol. ^^ this was a fun race to watch. I hope to be able to ride the Portishead train in a few years!

I love this! Jen, I always love your journeys, but you brought the North with you this time. I used to commute on the Severn Beach Line in the very early naughties from Redland or Montpelier and then on to Swindon via TM and it creaked. Well done FOSBR and for all your campaigning over the years. Now let's get bloody Portishead reopened!!! However, point of order - you should have met on Bristol Bridge - for that is where the name BrigStowe / Bristol originates!

It looks like this was done during school holidays, had it been a school day we'd still be waiting for the bus to turn up!

I love these types of videos. The whole reason I’m interested in trains it’s because my dad is a train driver.

When I'm working in Bristol, Portway P&R to Castle Bridge is part of my commute - but I also used to commute on the Severn Beach line, so I knew there was no way the train would win. Team Bus would have had an even bigger lead if they'd got off at The Centre and walked from there!

unfortunately the line to portwey park and ride is a slow line that stops everywhere until the infrastructure is upgraded and the line doubled the bus will always win - istr the park and ride bus also stops at temple gate which is walking distance to temple meads.

Instead of having to dash off to Gloucester, that's the shift I should've done! 😂

Pretty close but not surprising as the train goes quite a long way round compared to the bus. The train is better if you want to go to Clifton or the north end of town like Cheltenham Road though. Good to see a new station (and not the only one) in Bristol, it deserves its own metro really, especially to the airport.

There was a plan for an underground for the Bristol (and Bath) area in.... drumroll please.... 1975! (Which is roughly when Bristol got rid of it's accidental colony of Australian trapdoor spiders - don't worry, it's poisonous effect was extreme discomfort, not death - that it procured from ships in the 1930's.)

@@robertwilloughby8050 Apparently there's been plans in Bristol for an underground (and even a tram system) of all sorts ever since then as well but the different authorities could never work together for some reason, I guess that's why we have Metrobus today but it's not enough if the city wants to futureproof itself. Interesting hearing about the spiders though.

Why not do the same with Reading Green Park, Thanet Parkway and Marsh Barton. That those railway stations opened this year.

Not been to Bristol in sufficiently long that I didn't realise they'd actually built that bridge by now and was thinking of the Bristol Bridge instead for most of the race until it popped up. That did mean I was confused why they didn't just get off the bus at the Hippodrome and walk down Baldwin St mind, suspect it would still have been quicker.
