I wonder if American success at this would depend on generation. I'm about your age and we had it positively drilled in our head from maybe age 7 or so that we needed to be able to identify all 50 states & their capitals on a map at any given moment or else we would practically be too stupid to be allowed to exist in this Fine Fine Country of Freedom and Eagles™️. But I dunno if younger generations still get the same urgency thrown at them at a young age. I hope they don't, honestly.

@@MattGrayYES Understandable. Floridian here; it’s a nightmare trying to do research on UK geography, especially since the regional/cultural differences between areas in the UK seem to be more intense than the state-to-state variation in the US, and those differences are something I have to be relatively aware of. And if I’m struggling to do that for a fictional book, then I’d imagine the average American knows much less.
I'm from Canada and for some reason they decided it was really important for us to know all the US states and their capitals in grade 6. There's a version of this that doesn't even give you the borders or rivers and I can ace it as long as they don't immediately start me off with like Colorado or Missouri, those middle ones that you need to see one of their neighbours for context.

I'm a resident of the USA. Before clicking this video, I opened up a text editor and tried listing as many states as possible. I don't know if I took 10, 15 minutes or longer. I went until I was stumped. I listed 42 of the 50 states. I was amused to find that you quickly guessed 6 of the 8 states I forgot. And I didn't play that placing on the map thing but I bet I would score about the same. I really don't know how I would do with that quiz of naming all the states with that website. Yes, it took me a while in my text editor but the alphabetical placements of the names and the gaps between would probably be major clues about the states I forgot and might help me remember faster
Try English counties Matt, it's way harder than US states
Wyoming "sounds like a verb" made it seem like that was your reasoning for where it was, which made it very impressive that you got it right
How to anger yinzers: "Pittsburgh's in it isn't it?"
@CableFlame
3 жыл бұрын
To those not from there: a Yinzer is someone from Pittsburgh (the name comes from the unique word they use for "you all": yinz). Pittsburgh and Philadelphia are both in Pennsylvania, and there's a bit of a (usually friendly) rivalry between the 2 cities. To say that Pittsburgh is in Philadelphia is a bit of a slap in the face. (From a native Pennsylvanian.)
I think now you should do Naming English Counties

Loved this. A couple of the "it's around there" moments had me laughing. For instance, you said that Washington and Michigan were close. London is closer to Moscow than Washington is to Michigan. I suspect that the average American would have done about as well as you, honestly, maybe a bit better.

holy sharp focus!!!! nice camera!
I feel like your results on the map-click test suffered a bit from impatience/urgency of a timed (and recorded) testing situation and that you could have done even better, since it was giving you the state names when you clicked on wrong ones. But I think you did quite well on both for someone who doesn't live here. I'm from the US, and got 48/50 on the 'list' one, and two rushed mistakes on the map one. But if you give me a blank map with no prompting I can fill in all of the states (and Canadian provinces and territories) from memory. Then again, I live here, really like maps, and have actually visited all but one of the states (and two Canadian provinces/territories) via road trips. You did far better than my 27 countries on the Europe map, though I'm proud to say that I remembered the Baltic States, and after it was over most of the ones I'd missed at least sounded familiar, heheh.
"Wyoming sounds like a verb" yeah I guess so, never thought of it like that. Also 11:26 text "Ahh the sound of someone compensating for something with the size of their vehicle" xD
You did well on both, all things considered. I tried a Sporcle list of the most populous UK cities and was only able to correctly name about 15 of them.
The fact that you remember West Virginia even exists is something many Americans can't do.
I definitely couldn't, but maybe the American Eurovision will help in a few years 😅
Thanks for the Denver shoutout!
I’ve been trying to learn these! Still get very confused with New York, New Jersey, New Hampshire for some reason!
@AlRoderick
3 жыл бұрын
If it helps, New York is massive so memorizing its shape can help you out, New Jersey looks like an old fashioned telephone handset with its back to the Atlantic, New Hampshire is tricky but if you remember it's a twin side by side with Vermont and Vermont is the v-shaped one, New Hampshire's the other one.
Texan here, got 100% on names, 98% on placement (mixed up Kansas and Nebraska). Honestly surprised I got Vermont/New Hampshire the right way around.
Well done! I was happy that you remembered West Virginia easily in the first test; then, I remembered that you've been to Greenbank.
Great to see someone has found a way of showing their face without it being to small to see and without it being so big it blocks out the screen
I'm from New Jersey. I got 49/50 on the "name all the states" one (I was in the middle of typing Minnesota before the timer went off), and I got 71% on the "place them on a map" one.
You did better than I thought 👏👏👏
48% in Naming. I'd say you get at least 60% at this. 51% in placing. I think you should also get at least 60% And now to watching how you do :D
I had a quiz in the 4th grade on the states, and since then have heavily resisted any and all attempts to teach me the states. There weren’t really any other tries to get me to learn the states tho.
I'm originally from Southern California, never had a geography class until university, and have completed it in 2:19. I believe jetpunk also has a quiz thing where you assemble the USA out of the states and maybe that would help? because it's kinda just a big jigsaw puzzle.
One tip for remembering some of the more difficult states is the "Chef carrying a chicken drumstick" trick. Not it's official name probably but, it's exactly what it sounds like. How it works is, if you look straight South starting with Minnesota, you get: Chef's Hat: Minnesota Chef's Head: Iowa Chef's Top: Missouri Chef's Pants/Shorts: Arkansas Chef's Boots: Louisiana (also conveniently the "L" shaped state too) Also, to the right of the waist (a.k.a the border between the Missouri and Arkansas): Tennessee is the frying pan holding a chicken drumstick (Kentucky.). 7 states mastered. You will now not unsee it.
you certainly did better than I could
Map quiz: 62% at 2:31 - there's so many bloody squares. I could name 46 states (missed Iowa, Oklahoma, Missouri and Louisiana, and the last one only due to inability to spell). Greetings from a Finn who has never been in the States :P
As a US citizen that payed attention in school I can name about 48/50 in the 5 minutes. That’s really only because I struggled to spell the ones I missed correctly. I placed them all pretty fast without missing. Probably helps that I live in the Midwest so most of the “flyover” states are easy for me.
I would have done very well at this one, but that's because I was tested on it in school nearly every year. I used to know all the capital cities as well, but that knowledge has escaped me!
Tipp for memorizing the positions of US states: start with the chef. From Minnesota as the hat to Louisiana as his boots.
Without watching the video: • 1st Quiz - 0:38 seconds to spare. • 2nd Quiz - 1:23 finished all.
You refered to Oregon as "nothing" and that makes me happy. Thanks for remembering Washington.
You should try naming and placing all the english counties
To me this is more like a word association game with the Technical Difficulties in mind. Colorado - big * stopper! / Philadelphia - Fillies in Philly / etc.

As a Dutch person I'd recognize many of the names because of Crusader Kings, but I definitely can't actively recall or place them.
"I think Arizona is one of the hot ones." Matt, as someone who lives in Phoenix, Arizona, you have no idea how much of an understatement that statement is.
You did excellent! I would like to see how well an American can name the 92 counties (shires) of the United Kingdom. I'm an American that has been to the U.K. many times (before I retired)...I probably wouldn't be able to get more than 4 or 5 shires (names & locations) within the U.K.
I'm from the US and have been to over half the states so I got them all right (it's capitals I always forget) If they have one for UK counties I should try that, I think I can get all of England and Wales, but not all of Scotland or N Ireland.
From the Netherlands, did this a while back and I got like 40-50%. But funnily enough I got a fair few of the ones you didn't get. I struggled most with the square states in the middle and the small states in the north east.
Good job.
As an American from Ohio, I always find it strange that people from outside the US know literally anything about Ohio. We have nothing here
I got them all when listening them but a few years ago I challenged myself to learn the song (instead of doing my college assignments), can't fully place them all though I can do most. I struggle with all the i states, they're so similar and close together. I'm from the UK. Definitely do Canada provinces and UK counties in the future.
lmao when you were tryna find nebraska tho
Since I'm American and I'm pretty sure I could ace those tests (other than possibly mixing up the placement of Colorado vs Wyoming and New Hampshire vs Vermont) I decided to try to name and place the Canadian provinces and territories. I got 69% on naming them. I'm doing this on my phone so auto complete took care of spelling Saskatchewan for me. And I got 65% on placing them. I think that's pretty impressive considering I've never driven further north than Arkansas. I've gone as far north as Michigan but I was too young to read the map at that time.
I'd love to see you play some GeoGuessr.
As soon as you said Washington and didn't say Oregon right after, I knew Oregon was going missed
Me on my way to roast this guy knowing damn well the only city in the UK I can name is London:
im from massachussets and was honestly pretty surprised at how late you guessed it considering how much it ties into the uk's history lol
Honestly you did very well. With the map pinning, I was 100% in 1 minute, 42 seconds, but I'm from the USA and we learned this stuff in elementary school. Also "The Fifty Nifty United States" song is probably the easiest way to memorize the names of the states. I'd argue that a tough challenge for Americans is naming the capital of each state.

would be nice if we could see the map!
2:16 I was just sitting there running the fifty states song in my head that we all learned (at least in Washington) in fourth grade.
Michigan is kind of shaped like a mitt. People from Michigan will actually illustrate where they live by pointing it out on the inside of their hand. 😄

They do, it's great. Also much easier than Colorado. Someone asked where I had vacationed and I had to hold up my laptop to illustrate relative locations
MN, USA --- I watched the other two together and took all three quizzes. Did terrible on world, ok on europe, and I forgot delware existed [AND COULDN'T SPELL PENSILVANIA CONNETICUT OR MASSETCHUSETTS]
Yessss thank you for recognizing Philadelphian autonomy!! You have 1.5 million new admirers! Screw Pennsylvania >:(
"Forced to learn" is a good descriptor. And "forced to learn" is not a good way to make one "remember". as for me I could barely name all 50 states, much less place them.
there is another sporcle game, where you click on the map without borders to guess the states. That one was quite intense :D I needed a few trys for that :D
UK counties next?
I think you did well... especially for not being from here. I teach high school and might have my students do this after their final exam tomorrow for fun. I'll post results tomorrow. :) I got 100 for the naming and did it in 2:33... I'm a fast typer and there's a song that has the states in alphabetical order that I learned when I was 9. I got 100 for the placing the states too... but I'm a geography geek... I probably wouldn't do so hot with state capitals though.
