I avoid lane splitting if there's an open space next to the driver because there's the possibility of a lane change. You really need at least the front wheels of a car overlapping with the rear wheels of the car next to it so they are not likely to lane change. Ironically, against my preference, I often find myself "lane splitting" through cars with open space beside them because it's illegal in Alabama to lane split. I went to college in CA, by the way.

i did this all the time with R1200GSA in malaysia. the width of the handle bar is the indicator. handle bar fits, then side panniers no problem.

Nice video! I also commute on an RT in California freeway traffic. I've found it helps cars see me if I weave a bit as I move through traffic (where its safe). The human eye is naturally attracted to movement, and the weave makes your headlight move around. I've had loud bikes too and the weave makes more people notice me and give me space than loud pipes ever did.

The GT has a much more planted feel to the front end. Heavier but more responsive to input. The engine is never short of power and when in mountains or twisty roads I leave it 4th gear and do not need to shift nearly as much as the RT. The only area I think the RT is preferable is the maintenance costs as the 18k service is a big hit due to the plugs/valves and labor costs. For me, no difference in lane splitting ability.

Very nice video. Have a question. Is your bike an RT or RTP? It looks like you have the Police bags on? I was wondering if you have the RT stock bags or not. Seemed to lane split fine to me!

It’s also telling that you are riding a “cop bike” minus the lights but that does not make drivers any more alert to you presence… just amazingly oblivious drivers. But I understand. In US everyone has to drive, it’s not aspirational thing, or mastery…

If there is space, you can do it with anything. Try it with narrower lanes, like in a city. 😁 To bad that most out there are demanding space by reving the engine...😒 I own o moto, but also a car. Respect is earned not demanded 😎
