392's are tough! I worked in a repair shop in Flagstaff in the mid-'80's. A fellow was towing his travel trailer up the mountain from Phoenix with an IH pickup when the lower hose blew and dumped all the coolant. He didn't catch it right away so it got hot! He put a on a new hose and drove on but the engine seized within a couple miles. When I tore it down one rod had seized to the crank. Why? That 392 had gotten so hot that the Babbitt in the center cam bearing had melted and ran down the oil passage to the main bearing. When the driver first shut it off after the hose blew, the crank just happened to stop with the oil passage to the rod journal pointing straight up! The melted Babbitt ran right into that oil passage and blocked it, starving that rod of oil! Had to regrind the crank and resize the rod but nothing cracked or warped or scored! Just new gaskets, rings and bearings (beside the crank and one rod) and he was on his way. By the way, he had just had the engine rebuilt in Phoenix so it barely had 150 miles on it.

They're all the same block casting, just different bore and stroke. My grandfather had several trucks, a scout 80, a traveled team and all John deere tractors lol. But he ran a junk/salvage yard, so he had ih pickups for his small work fleet, the scout was his hunting and fishing rig. It had a 142 slant 4 originally, but he ended up putting in a later AMC 258 and the new bellowing bolted up to the T90 transmission. Old d20 twin stick t case was what I learned to drive a stick and wheel in. Dad welded up the original axles. The hubs were spun welded in place and many failed on an incline or in 4 low. He had a blue, 74 ih 2wd with a 4 speed and air. He wanted me to have it but he passed away from bone cancer and we had to sell off everything to pay off debts and I am now a paraplegic, so only automatic transmissions work for me now, but I still am curious about the old 'binders. I'd need 4x4 here in iowa, which costs more. But though I can no longer stand, I still have my hands and my mind, and I'm very well versed in old 1979 and older vehicles. When pertronix came out with electronic ignition conversion kits, I bought one for a friend with a travelall and it made our cold winters a bit easier.
Of course it can be a daily driver. I remember when these were new. A friend bought one and drove it daily for many years. It was a very good vehicle. Nowdays you will need some parts availability and lots of fuel but it will be a good daily driver.
I had a 71 Travelall and it was my family hauler/daily driver when I lived in Kalispell Montana. I so miss that truck!!! Best winter truck I've ever had with 4 wheel drums. Comfortable, powerful and stable on and off road.
Depends on how far you are traveling and how much you want to spend in fuel. Fine old, usually over built trucks, the corn binders were. Bit hard on gas as I remember. Mainly due to their weight. Interesting note, the original Air Stream Travel Trailer Association President Wally, something traveled the world leading Air Stream Caravans always using an International Truck or wagon because of their ruggedness.
Love Me some IH, I had 2 different P/U' , 70 CC 4door with 6.5' bed and a "71 2 door w/8' bed and an Alaskan cab-over camper, both were AWD 4x4, the last one I sold to my ex buddy, who picked so many parking tickets, the city impounded it and he owed more $$$ than it was worth, so he let them keep it, never to be seen again... I miss that old truck, many fond memories and travel adventures !!! along with the usual breakdowns and road repairs... Part of the fun in owning an American Icon !!!!
Great truck. A friend of mine had a '70 (69? 71?) that he bought in the late 80's. We pulled a late 50's Shasta Camper behind it when we went to auto races, auto swap meets or what ever adventure caught our eye. Always a lot of fun. Great memories. Oh, it's May-Oh-Pack. Wow, can't believe that little part of NY made it into a KZread video. LOL
Super cool classic SUV from International Harvester
Anything can be. Maintain and service it if you can get the parts.
In the 1978 I drove a1972 International 3/4. Ton pickup for the country of Into in California
Probably be better in the snow than these newer cars!
I had one a 1975 in 1986 and loved it pull my camper trailer with it for years and fold the rear seat down and you could big part with it I was into fixing up old cars and used it for getting parts wilth it was a Californis truck so no rust I think it was the 345 V8 with duel glass packs exhaust and man did that truck sound great going up the hill to lake tahoe I am a big fan of the international travelall , trucks. and scouts and over the year have had a bunch of them wish I could find a good one here in Oklahoma .
Nice truck! I daily a '73 ford f350 Super camper special. You gotta keep these beauties rolling!
I have a 73 Travelall 1110 4x4 345/4 speed. Used it as a daily and work until I had to park it for fuel tank and rear axle issues. It was getting 13.5 MPG and that was off road in the hills of Tennessee. Working on tractors and log skiders.
I love the vehicle. but I don't have the money. Thanks for the video
She sound great hello from Ohio
Nice travelall!😊 Thanks for sharing!
Awesome find Ben.
Nice videos Ben, Love the story time, I like that yours are not trying to be like someone's else's, You do U, definitely, these are great. ❤
Of course it can! I've been daily driving my scouts for the past 15 years!

Yes! 👍🏼🏁
When I was a kid my dad had a3/4 ton travelall we camped in it towed our trailer I loved that old thing also had a 1/2 pick up ran all over us kids in the back the good old days lol. This is a cool old rig
Massachusetts? I'm in southern N.H ,right by Keene,I got a buddy with a 4x4 stepside and a one ton dually that need a good home,
You have to understand that there are none of these on the east coast rust belt where I live, but they look awesome! Keep up the good content!
It sure would be, La Pine to Madras, or Prineville, would be a great rig for that, the chllenge would be downtown Portland or Seattle ,Great video, Thumbs up
Sweet
grumpy old man ride, hey take a look at adventures made from scratch last video he has a orange step side Iternational you would love he has a scap yard car crusher channel in Kansas.
Yes it can and I wish I was close enough to get it. How do you feel about a 1973 1310 4x4 345 v8 4 speed for daily driver
The 392 is a small block. With as many miles are on that truck the obsolete ball joints are probably shot?

By IH’s lingo it’s a small block. But compared to everyone else’s engines they’re big blocks. 392 weighs more and is dimensionally larger than a Chevy 454.
The interior is also really tough. Had a '71 Travelall with green brocade seats (looked like the interior of grandma's coffin), Joe was loading a snowmobile into the back of it off a snow bank and he slipped on the gas and bounced the skis off the back of the front seat. Threw the snowmobile 2 feet backwards and it didn't do any damage to the seat........... just sayin'.........
I have not been to Sisters for years, I bet it has grown a lot. This is an amazing rig. Take care

There used to be some great fish up there when I was little.
MAHOPAC is pronounced May-O-Pack. Don't sweat it...I'm sure there's some towns out your way that us easterners would have fun with! 😀
I had a 1978 with a 345 ci and I loved driving it. Terrible on gas, drove great. I would actually love to buy it but theres no way i could afford it.
609 especially if your timing is too far back, they get red hot so I always run a couple degrees advanced from spec
Does it have a Holley on it or a Carter Thermoquad .
I'd daily one
I recently acquired a 67 IH step side pickup with a 6 cylinder 4 speed, engine runs clutch is questionable brakes kinda work. But both doors have been robbed of all the window regulators and latches. Parts? Or maybe a whole doors? There is a 72 1100 4X4 up in KS. You can see it on YT Nobody's Show. Any help is appreciated
Could you start using picture stabilisation on your videos. I can't watch for too long before I start to get motion sickness. 😁
😮what's the little yellow car in the parts car area????
Whatever happened to International roll back??
😎🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸😎
👍
Still got an exhaust leak
I would definitely daily drive it👍 Question, I have a 75 4x4 392 200 with 28,000 miles, is this something that should be preserved more or less or just keep driving it? I don't think I would ever sell it but I also don't want to hurt the value.

Dude you should be driving it. Hoping for a payday on a IH is kinda funny
Is a 392 really a big block? I thought it was the same basic block as the 304-345. I always thought the 404 and 445 were considered big blocks.

If I remember right back when I worked at a IH dealership the 304 was a tad bit different than the 345/392 . All 304 and 345 vehicles I worked on had two barrel carbs and single exhaust . The 392 I work on all had four barrel carbs ( Holley or Carter Thermoquad ) and dual exhaust . The 392 with the Thermoquad would out run the ones with the Holley .

I'm just going by the old grain trucks we had. They visually looked identical. We did have a 72 pickup with a 345 and 4 barrel. @@wg4405
Ben have you ever considered you may have a bit of a truck problem?
I would drive it daily
Factory car tree?
Factory did not make many 1975s in any series of body styles. All are low production 1975 is last year of the Pickup and Travelall.
Drove International Travelalls that were Ambulances
